to think Tesco should fucking well PAY THEIR STAFF?

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 16/02/2012 16:32

I know, I know, there have been threads about it already.

But this is so rage-inducing, I want THE WHOLE OF EVERYONE to know about it.

Jobcentre advert placed by Tesco for night shift staff. Who will be paid [drumroll] JSA (£67 a week) plus travel expenses.

Why the fucking fuck should Tesco get their staff for free? Why? Their profits last year were something like £3.5 billion last year!

I know who I think is taking the piss here, and its not the unemployed people who will be forced to work night shifts at Tesco for their £67 a week Angry

as a great big porker flies past my window...

Yes, it's the Daily Mail Shock

"..Cultural observers could not fail to notice the similiarites between what is taking place here towards sick, disabled, elderly or any group perceived to be vulnerable and weak and what occurred in Hitler's Germany.

This may not be ethnic cleansing that we are witnessing - and some are already experiencing - but it's a type of cleansing all the same...."

While I don't have reason to doubt the writer's sincerity, I suspect that the Mail has had sufficient feedback to cause concerns about potential loss of paying punters, hence the temporary cessation of persecution.

NunOnTheRun · 18/02/2012 18:21

..oops..
cessation of persecution...of benefits claimants.

GobHoblin · 18/02/2012 18:25

TapselteerieO · 18/02/2012 18:29

molepom · 18/02/2012 19:12

We need proof that Tesco has pulled out..

There's a rumour going around that the Arcaida Group has also pulled out but no proof of this either.

molepom · 18/02/2012 19:15

Official..Matalan has pulled out..here

Glitterknickaz · 18/02/2012 19:17

I want to know about ASDA too. I'm a bit worried as we can't bloody afford Sainsburys. We buy from the market as it is but you can't really get your tinned goods/pasta there.

molepom · 18/02/2012 19:33

ASDA's on the list. Sorry.

Try ALDI, Lidl co-op, morrisons for your shopping. Tere are rumours that some morrisons stores are in the scheme, but there's no proof of this yet.

If this is true and they are smart, they will keep it quiet and leave the scheme before they are found out.

Glitterknickaz · 18/02/2012 19:34

I know they are for now... hoping they back out soon. Co op is too expensive too.

I'm going to have to drive a good 12 miles to the nearest Lidl, there's no near ALDI. Ah well needs must.

TapselteerieO · 18/02/2012 19:35

That is great that Matalan has pulled out.

TapselteerieO · 18/02/2012 19:36

I am off to look at the news, been out all day, I wonder if there is much media coverage?

Glitterknickaz · 18/02/2012 19:38

I doubt it, Tapsel

LAbaby · 18/02/2012 20:04

I am pro workfare. I don't think in this financial climate people should be given money and not expect to work for it. That expectation of entitlement is immoral in my opinion.

Glitterknickaz · 18/02/2012 20:05

Not as immoral as major corporations profiteering off the back of the vulnerable, people with disabilities, carers and the terminally ill, LAbaby.

carernotasaint · 18/02/2012 20:10

Chris Grayling et al are talking bollocks. These schemes have ALWAYS been mandatory. Back in 2000 i did a workfare stint for three months at a local Oxfam shop and the local council.
When that finished those utter utter cunts at Reed/Pelcombe wanted me to work at Campbells soup factory for my JSA plus 15 pounds a week for ANOTHER three months.
I was getting utterly desperate so much so that i took a job in a sex chatline office. Which meant i signed off. Not good enough for the provider Oohhh noooo they came to the office to have a nose at what i was doing but they came during the day and i was working nights.
They started asking my then new boss questions.
they were basically trying to lose me the job so that i would have to sign on again and go back on their books as free labour.
My then boss saw through it and told them to fuck off.
I remember some Job Centre employee proudly telling me that loads of women had took this sort of job because it was either that or workfare.

MoreBeta · 18/02/2012 20:21

Workfare and Workhouse are very similar words and frankly pretty similar concepts. I am NEVER voting Tory again!

I just cannot believe how stupid politically and economically this is. If people on JSA were doing things for the community that would benefit the community I would be in favour. That is not what is happening here. Firms should pay workers - this just makes a complete mockery of minimum wage and existing JSA rules that actually make it illegal to do voluntary 'free' work.

peekabooby · 18/02/2012 20:25

@LAbaby, even if you take the stance that benefit claimant= Scrounger workfare is still a no brainer. This scheme is damaging the employment market. My dd's friend was laid off from B&Q, three weeks later another friend on JSA was working at B&Q doing the same job.

Same for overtime, a lot of retail workers depend on overtime, with workfare in shops can cut overtime and make workfare work the shifts that they have to pay there staff more for, such as sunday.

carernotasaint · 18/02/2012 20:25

Wonder where LA Baby sprang from. Bet i can guess!!

minimathsmouse · 18/02/2012 20:26

Shock carernotasaint
I've never signed on touch wood but one of my friends was told (she wasn't on JSA but income support!) to go to an interview with a private jobs advisory company. She was told either to find a paying job or do voluntary and if she didn't her money would be stopped. She has two DCs. She wasn't asked politely it was demanded. She's now doing voluntary work which she enjoys but her involvement wasn't on a voluntary basis.

carernotasaint · 18/02/2012 20:28

LA Baby i take it then that you will have absolutely NO problem with your husband/boyfriend using these chatlines as after all it keeps those ladies in work and off the dole doesnt it?!!!

thecook · 18/02/2012 20:28

Ingeus who are paid to get me into work, are little help. My adviser has rung me once since Xmas and I have only had one reply to the numerous emails I have sent them updating them on my job hunting progress. I never bother to go to their office either, last time I went they were so busy I couldn't get a seat. Tbh I couldn't care less, the chances of being forced onto Workfare are remote!

peekabooby · 18/02/2012 20:29

Plus as Glitterknickas posted, Terminally ill people with an expected 6 mths + to live and disabled people being forced to go on workfare Angry

DorisIsWaiting · 18/02/2012 20:29

LAbaby if working- people should be given the minimum wage by that employer. I think that the reason this has taken so long to come to the public's attention is because many feel it is not unreasonable to ask those recieving benefit to do some work, with charities or in the public sector.

The problems have become apparent that huge multinational companies are using people on JSA who they do not have to pay to replace workers being paid the minimum wage (with the appropraite tax and NI contributions to the government). In addition the gov are kindly paid the huge multinationals for the difficult task on employing such slave labour. In this finanicial climate we can not afford to pay companies to use free workers when we could be in receipt of tax and NI for those paid a wage.

In addition those on the new ESA (incapacity equivilent) will now also be expected to work for benefits, not on;ly those on the fit to work, but those not yet signed off as fit by a doctor but fit according to atos, In this group there is no 8 week time limit, the individual could struggle to complete a full weeks work (they may manage 12 hours but no more) in such case they will lose their benefits. This group INCLUDES terminally ill cancer patients who have 6 months to a year to live.

It is immoral and I will be boycotting.
