to think Tesco should fucking well PAY THEIR STAFF?

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 16/02/2012 16:32

I know, I know, there have been threads about it already.

But this is so rage-inducing, I want THE WHOLE OF EVERYONE to know about it.

Jobcentre advert placed by Tesco for night shift staff. Who will be paid [drumroll] JSA (£67 a week) plus travel expenses.

Why the fucking fuck should Tesco get their staff for free? Why? Their profits last year were something like £3.5 billion last year!

I know who I think is taking the piss here, and its not the unemployed people who will be forced to work night shifts at Tesco for their £67 a week Angry

minimaths - Drop The Health Bill: epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/22670

garlicfrother · 18/02/2012 10:39

You can find lots of good petitions on toomanycuts.blogspot.com/p/petitions.html

minimathsmouse · 18/02/2012 10:47

Thank you Garlic, I have already signed it. I'm wondering if there is some way of calling for no confidence over their inability to get a consensus on both bills. Surely a Government which is unable to gain support is a dead duck. Thus far they have resorted to trying to use little known laws to bypass the hs of lords.

Iv'e worked out how to set up the e-petition but it would need very careful wording and as you can probably tell, i'm not that eloquent.

Tiredmumno1 · 18/02/2012 10:49

Thanks mini, I shall try that Smile

TapselteerieO · 18/02/2012 10:52

Well done Woollyideas! I will send an e-mail to him, not expecting a response but it is worth a try.

I do not agree with workfare, it undermines all workers rights to a fair wage, cuts already low paid workers over time and often makes them redundant because these businesses are making huge profits by having workfare staff instead.

A fair wage means people can contribute to this country, slave wages means that they remain stuck in the poverty trap.

If Tesco/Asda etc can afford to pay their CEOs nearly £7 million a year then they can afford to pay their workers a reasonable wage.

I know it has been said already but the lack of NI contributions etc is a huge worry and a huge drain on our welfare state and all it provides.

My eldest son is 19. He has 11 GCSE's and 2 A levels but felt uni was not for him. He has been on workfare at Poundland. He was excited, because he was led to believe there may be a job for him at the end of it. He worked 'overtime' and horrible shifts, trying to impress. At the end of his 6 weeks, there was nothing. The next batch of workfare workers was about to start.
Yes, he can use them as a reference and work experience on his c.v. But what good is that? He needs a job. It's back to square one, and I suppose, in a few more weeks, another stint somewhere else? And we have to continue to support him even though we are both in low paid jobs .( DH at Tesco, me a T.A.)
Sad Angry

TapselteerieO · 18/02/2012 11:05

I won't shop at Boots until they categorically state they do not use Workfare, individual stores are encouraged to compete if those making the biggest profits are using Workfare staff then other stores will do the same.

minimathsmouse · 18/02/2012 11:12

I'm off for a bit but before I go out I'm going to email the Tesco CEO.
I haven't actually been banned yet from Tesco FB page and Dorothy Perkins- the only option is to comment on one of their products. So far no ones comments have been removed but other people are on there still discussing colours and sizes and hem lines Angry

Nilgiri · 18/02/2012 11:13

So Boots aren't "actively recruiting staff" but may have allowed " individuals to gain experience".

Does that mean they've never given anyone a job at the end of it?

ravenAK · 18/02/2012 11:23

Somehow they haven't banned me from Tesco FB yet. I reckon linking to this thread might do it...Grin

Tiredmumno1 · 18/02/2012 11:23

Exactly nilgiri, well I did reply with what mini said but no response as yet

ravenAK · 18/02/2012 11:34

Well, that did the trick - a link to this thread did indeed get me banned!

Posting it on my own FB instead Grin.

JaneMare · 18/02/2012 11:48

i haven't been banned yet, been spamming and posting questions on their fb page for almost 24hrs Grin

ravenAK · 18/02/2012 11:50

KateSpade · 18/02/2012 12:16

I completely understand its taking Actual Jobs out the economy, however if workfare was removed, would they employ other people?
I doubt it, they would make their minimum wage staff work twice as hard for no more money.

Plus, i hate to say it, but their are people out their who don't want to work, and want to claim JSA for along as they can? Work Fare would maybe knock a smile off their faces, i don't agree with it being unpaid though!

I got a response from Argos...

My question to them was why were they happy in using the workfare scheme, and undermining the economy..

Their response:

we understand people are concerned about recent reports concerning the Government?s work experience programmes. Argos employs around 27,000 people, of which around 50% are under 25, straight from school, college and university and go on to have great careers within our business. We are very passionate about giving young people opportunities to improve their employability and work with job centres around the country on a range of programmes, but always with the objective of creating a meaningful role within Argos

My statement back:

You have not answered my questions, the workfare scheme is in direct violation of the human rights act 1998. Are you participating in the scheme yes or no? If you are, will you be withdrawing from the scheme? When will you be making an announcement about this?

molepom · 18/02/2012 12:29

Kate what about the disabled and those with terminal illness being made to do this? Surely you can not agree to that as well? These are the people being affected more by this than thoes who can not be bothered to work. Again a small minority of pisstakers are making it worse for genuine claiments.

SanctiMoanyArse · 18/02/2012 12:35

Kate whilst there ARE those people there are not that many; this makes for interesting related reading I think

And workfare isn;t really about JSA; it stopped being that ages ago. Workfare is about redefining what being a Carer is and forcing those people into work they can't possibly undertake without neglecting the person they care for; it's about my son when he hits 18 being made to do it as part of some ESA Support Scheme when the Manager who gets him will rapidly learn that not hitting ESA criteria doesn't mean you are not severely disabled but not being able to complete the scheme will lead to him losing his income; it's about taking the vast majority of claimants, disposing of their back story and labelling them undeserving and workshy. In need of introducing to the world of work even if they just got made redundant after 25 years; in need of basic skills even if they have a PHd; in need of paying back to society even if they paid IN for decades upon decades, or still do by dint of being a carer or a volunteer somewhere or sick or....

well yes.

Doubtless various parties will now be weaseling about trying to pretend this is all a misunderstanding.

So I'd like to share with you a report from the House of Lords on 5 April 2011, criticising the way the Mandatory Work Activity Scheme was being introduced.

The Lords found that the DWP didn't know why it was introducing the scheme, with explanations 'veering between "work related activity with a view to assisting the customer to improve their prospects of obtaining employment"; and "a mandatory programme in order to reorient their [claimants'] mindset" - which a number of commentators had perceived as a punitive regime.'

The DWP couldn't provide 'even basic information on its financial costs and benefits'.

The DWP didn't know who was going to be forced onto the scheme, as it was down to individual JobCentre staff's discretion: 'The Minister said he did not envisage the Mandatory Work Scheme targeting those people moving off ESA or Incapacity Benefit, but rather being aimed at the conventional claimant on Jobseeker's Allowance. However, the Regulations before the Committee would allow such people to be caught by the Scheme.'

The also Lords recognised that many people now declared completely Fit to Work (Group 1 in my post at Thu 16-Feb-12 23:28:22) still have medical conditions restricting their work, and raised 'the concern that the Adviser's initial decision to require someone to undertake a work-related activity may be ill-informed and the claimant may receive a benefit sanction in consequence.'

(And now, of course, the DWP are considering actively extending the scheme to people still receiving ESA and in the WRAG - ie Group 2 in my earlier post.)
