to think Tesco should fucking well PAY THEIR STAFF?

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 16/02/2012 16:32

I know, I know, there have been threads about it already.

But this is so rage-inducing, I want THE WHOLE OF EVERYONE to know about it.

Jobcentre advert placed by Tesco for night shift staff. Who will be paid [drumroll] JSA (£67 a week) plus travel expenses.

Why the fucking fuck should Tesco get their staff for free? Why? Their profits last year were something like £3.5 billion last year!

I know who I think is taking the piss here, and its not the unemployed people who will be forced to work night shifts at Tesco for their £67 a week Angry

"Tesco delivered an ultimatum to the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) demanding that ministers guarantee no one would lose their benefits"

Just posted here

Still no statement from them on their site or FB pages.

cakeismysaviour · 18/02/2012 00:33

Still not good enough, molepom. I'm pleased to see companies rejecting this scheme, but if Tesco think that doing this will stop the backlash against them, they will be sorely disapointed....

whackamole · 18/02/2012 00:35

YANBU. My cousin posted this on FB the other day.

molepom · 18/02/2012 00:36

I agree, it isn't good enough. Not by a long shot.

garlicfrother · 18/02/2012 00:38

Sure is! They'd have to be ever so naive to have not known about the threats.

LadyPeter · 18/02/2012 00:39

basically if there's work for 'jobseekers' at Tesco then there's work, full-stop and anyone who works for Tesco should get the same as anyone else who works for Tesco. And another thing Tesco has said it has 'suggested' to the DWP that the threat of loss of benefits be removed but The Independent claims Tesco has delivered an 'ulitmatum'- but what is the exact timescale and nature of this so-called ultimatum?

TapselteerieO · 18/02/2012 00:41

Could we all apply for that job? It would waste a little bit of their time.

TapselteerieO · 18/02/2012 00:46

How do we get into discussions of the day on Mumsnet? I thought it would be related to number of posts?

Clearly not when some have only 80+ posts.

minimathsmouse · 18/02/2012 00:50

I think to be honest, Tesco isn't in a position to issue ultimatums, or do they now think that the scheme was set up soley to benefit them.

They are in breach of DWP guidelines, they are happy to accept slave labour, they have said nothing in response to claims they will work terminally ill and disabled people into the ground not for 4wks work exp but on a permanent ongoing basis.

If the DWP takes the compulsory aspect out of this it doesn't have a "Workfare scheme"

Tesco are either talking out their arses or they really do influence government policy and this really isn't a democracy.

So workfare is either about getting people into jobs paid or unpaid or it was set up to create greater profits for Tesco.

Tesco clearly believe its the latter

LadyPeter · 18/02/2012 00:54

yes the whole 'ultimatum' thing is bs- TEsco don't give a shit- all they want to do is to get out of the bad PR shit storm they are at the centre of- but with enough pressure they will withdraw from the scheme

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 18/02/2012 00:54

can't seem to post on dorothy perkins' wall either.

thecook · 18/02/2012 00:56

I just got onto Tesco! Lasted seven minutes. Got a few 'likes' though. They haven't blocked me yet. Time to try again.

LadyBeagleEyes · 18/02/2012 00:59

I'm tired and a little bit drunk, but so pleased that this is a subject that Mn ers have taken up.
Quite simply, if there is work available in those massive corporations, then hire them and pay them MW.
To force jobseekers to do the same job on JSA stinks of corruption, both with the government and their corporate 'bosses'.
Hope this is just the start of it and would love to see MN take this up as one of their causes.
It's seriously important stuff.

TapselteerieO · 18/02/2012 01:10

To pay or not to pay: Asda and Argos choose workfare over work February 17th, 2012 Corporate Watch.

carernotasaint · 18/02/2012 01:27

Absolutely fucking disgusting. Its abhorrhent

thecook · 18/02/2012 04:30

I am on JSA. If I am forced to work for Tesco I will have an 'accident' Of course being a feckless unemployed person watching J Kyle all day I will be aware of Personal Injury lawyers.

thecook · 18/02/2012 04:36

Funny how those wankers on the previous thread only a few days ago, regarding the boycott on shops using slave. labour have not joined us on here. All together girls....,,

Mimishimi · 18/02/2012 05:18

I'm in two minds about it. I do feel that those on benefits who can work but choose not to should be made to. That said, I also believe that companies should pay the mandated minimum wage at the very least. The problem is that many of the people on benefits wouldn't have a chance of being employed if the companies did not have any incentive to hire them but hiring them on those sums undercuts those who are willing to work such jobs for a fair wage. If they did one hour each evening on nightfill ' back to work' program, I don't think 67 pounds is so outrageous.

woollyideas · 18/02/2012 07:42

Thanks to the person above who posted the email address of Tesco's CEO (aargh - can't find it now, but it's [email protected] for anyone else who might want to make use of it)

I have sent him the following message:

Dear Mr Clarke,

I am extremely disappointed that Tesco has signed up to a programme which uses unpaid labour. I am even more disappointed that its Facebook page has attempted to stifle any criticism or questions about its actions by blocking posters and repeating the same 'cut and paste' message about the advert seeking free staff being a 'mistake'.

I am very surprised that you are not following the leads of other major retailers by pulling out of this scheme.

This has shown your business up for what it really is: a company that puts profit before human beings. You disgust me.

Yours sincerely,

molepom · 18/02/2012 08:07

Mimi - for those fit and able to work, those that can and the ones how avoid working, everyone will agree with you, but the outrage is not only those on JSA are forced on this, and they have a time limit on how long they have to work..the outrage is because they are forcing those on ESA (incapacity benefit, including the disabled and those with teminal cancer with more than 6 months to live) to do the same thing WITH NO time limit on how many weeks they have to work even though they are deemed by medical professionals NOT FIT TO WORK.

DorisIsWaiting · 18/02/2012 08:44

Wow my first ever fb deletion Wink

I linked to the the same advert as minimathmouse ec.europa.eu/eures/eures-searchengine/servlet/ShowJvServlet?lg=EN&pesId=58&uniqueJvId=HBH%2F25785 they didn't like it as it showed their carefully crafted press release to be a work of fiction.

Will try again this morning Grin

minimathsmouse · 18/02/2012 10:20

Thank you Doris, I think we need to undermine Tesco's PR which says that the advert was a mistake because this highlights that it was anything but.

I'm going back to FB this morning. I have signed all the petitions but can't find a petition calling for a vote of no confidence over these two abhorrent bills, Health and social care and the welfare bill.

As I see it, both of these bills will not go through with any consensus, nobody wants these changes and the CONDEMS are now even using little used/understood laws to bypass the house of lords. If they succeed it will be sad day for every ordinary person in the UK.

I think a call of no confidence over their inability to pass new laws could actually be the first step in waving these B's goodbye.

Tiredmumno1 · 18/02/2012 10:30

Just had a response from boots:

"we would like to take this opportunity to clarify that Bpots doesn't currently adopt a specific policy of actively recruiting staff on this basis. At a local community level, however, we're aware that some stores may have accepted requests by individuals to gain experience under this government programme, on each occasion at our store manager's discretion, many thanks"

Should I respond to it, if yes what should I put. And do you believe this is true?

Tiredmumno1 · 18/02/2012 10:30

Boots not Bpots Blush

minimathsmouse · 18/02/2012 10:37

I think it needs a response they are trying to duck the question. Do they or don't they endorse the use of unpaid labour? They do because they are allowing individual managers to do so. They either have a company policy of paying people the minimum wage or they don't.
