back on the late 70's Jasper Carrot had a New York numberplate that said B0LL0CK5 but it meant nothing to Americans - who never use that word - cracked me up when I saw it on 5th Avenue

PeanutButterCupCake · 08/02/2012 19:15

YABU
Each to their own, not affecting me Hmm

MissHaviCLAM · 08/02/2012 19:20

Well there's only one thing more twatty than a personalised number plate and that's one that doesn't even apply to me you as it came with the car!

Pendeen · 08/02/2012 19:31

ninah · 08/02/2012 19:45

ithaka · 08/02/2012 19:48

Oooh they are naffer than a naff thing!

Of course people can spend their money as they wish, but like an orange fake tan, hair extensions, big fake boobs, it is on public display so it is silly to be offended when people make a judgement on what you have chose to display in public. The judgement usually being, what a plonker!

gettingeasier · 08/02/2012 20:16

Haha Campari so like a giant version of those things people use to put on spare toilet rolls. Brilliantly strange creation Smile

Well after reading all your comments after my OP, I still maintain my view that PN plates are pretty high up there on my pointless things in the universe list.

Saddened that no-one has even challenged the wooly hoover cover for pointless supremacy item though. Anyone?

I wish there was a like button I could press on some of these comments, many of you in both camps have made me smile, and I thank you for brightening my day, especially unimaginativedad on X5s

I suppose my post reflects the nagging unease I feel when I see PN plates everywhere where I live. It is a very affluent, status orientated, competitive part of the world, and for me they have come to symbolise in one sense consumerism ad absurdum. That people pay thousands (sometimes hundreds of thousands) of pounds for 2 bits of plastic to stick on their car, for no other reason I can think of in most cases than to indicate to others that they have enough disposable income to do so, seems quite odd. I am not trying to attack individuals who have them, but to question and feel a bit depressed about the powers that be in society which create a market for them, a society where people come to believe that they are desirable, and give them kudos. At least with a Hermes handbag or other status symbols I can think of, Range Rover, designer dress etc they arguably generally have a purpose other than simply publicly indicating wealth.

A few people on here have spoken of working really hard for them, or knowing people who do....well I remain, despite your posts a little baffled as to why people spend very hard earned cash on 2 "symbolic" bits of plastic rahter than something else....and yes of course everyone is entitled to spend their money on whatever they like, but personal entitlement to do something doesn't mean it is therefore not something relevant for consideration, or doesn't matter, as some seem to suggest, does it?

I am going to take over the world shortly, create utopia/El Dorado/whateverit'scalled and everyone will be happily making useful thingamigiggys out of recycled peronalised number plates. You'll see.
landrover can keep hers though as her sentimental posts about her MUM number plate have melted my heart x

I like the work/trade related ones like H20 for plumbers etc. My newly wed initals spell out a word, I am tempted but don't want to be that memorable!

landrover · 08/02/2012 21:37

madaboutmadmen · 08/02/2012 21:42

YANBU.

I've often thought how satisfying it would be to be a police officer and be able to pull up anyone with a badly spaced or altered number plate.

deste · 08/02/2012 23:33

I think it must depend on what part of the country you come from. I don't think anyone bats an eyelid about whether you have one or not where I live. For what it's worth I have one that reads my name and my DD has one that reads her name. Both of them were really inexpensive because they meant nothing to anyone else. We have an unusual surname and have one number of a difference on the number plates. I can assure you we are not chavs.

Strawbezza · 08/02/2012 23:37

Personalised number plates, and the fees paid when they are transferred between vehicles, are a good tax earner. Where's the harm? I like to see them, some are funny, some are confusing, some are plain weird. Best one I ever saw was "XMA 5" that I spotted one Christmas. Wondered if they changed it for the other seasons Grin

Tortington · 08/02/2012 23:38

my personal number plate says MN KMA

Snowboarder · 08/02/2012 23:48

I have one and love it so nerr nerr! It was a gift from DH when he was DP and I had a much crappier car. It didn't cost a bomb and doesn't spell anything out but is significant to me. Couldn't be bothered if people think I'm a 'chav' because of it. They're the same people who are probably judging me for being young and having a baby and obviously another one in the oven. Life's too short to agonise over what people think of you.

Strawbezza · 08/02/2012 23:53

Ooooh I wonder if Y4NBU is available Grin
