SoupDragon · 08/02/2012 12:31

I certainly think far less of people that bitch about them.

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 08/02/2012 12:31

I wouldnt "waste" my money on one, but if others wish to, well that's up to them.

I did, however, smile when I saw a shiny new posh car round our way with the plate W3 WON. Lucky lottery I assume!

JustHecate · 08/02/2012 12:32

I agree with you, OP. My husband had one. On his range rover (wayhay, a twofer Grin ). It sort of spelled out the name of his business. If you said it out loud it sounded the same. Sort of.

It was stupid.

And I know damn well it was all for show.

It always is.

IDoNotLIKEFagin · 08/02/2012 12:33

Grin at FAGS and living the dream.

Would quite like YABVU myself...

"And I know damn well it was all for show.

I love the way you think you are able to see inside everyone's mind. Bless.

KnickerlessCackleby · 08/02/2012 12:36

Got a PN then Soupdragon? Feeling a wee bit touchy?

EnjoyResponsibly · 08/02/2012 12:36

I'd like FANJO Grin

BerryLellow · 08/02/2012 12:37

They are a bit daft. There's one on our car, but it came with it and I cba to go to the trouble of changing it. It's the make/model of the car so it does make sense, but it is slightly embarrassing as I clearly don't take care of the car like it's previous owner so you have a poncey number plate on a somewhat dishevelled Audi.

Meh. Each to their own I say. Good to know I'm a chav and a twat though, thanks for that :)

TheParanoidAndroid · 08/02/2012 12:38

no such thing in my country, its not possible.

EnjoyResponsibly · 08/02/2012 12:38

I'm researching buying DS one with PFB1 Grin

SoupDragon · 08/02/2012 12:38

Can you read, KnickerlessCackleby? Ive already said that I couldn't give a damn what people think.

That doesn't mean I can't point out where people are being a bit thick.

SoupDragon · 08/02/2012 12:40

I'm sure that, if I could be arsed, I could find something most people do that I think is a complete waste of time and money and makes them a twat. However, I am not that shallow.

silverfrog · 08/02/2012 12:40

I spent less on my personalised plate than a lot of people spend on haircuts, or make up, or any beauty products, in a year. guaranteed.

you have to know me to know my plate is personalised (or be such a car geek that you notice it doesn't quite match the age of my car).

why the bitching?

people have money. they spend it. that's the way the world works.

Dolcelatte · 08/02/2012 12:41

I also know several people who have cherished numbers which they have inherited, so they may have sentimental value, become a 'family heirloom', so to speak. My cousin lost his father to cancer - they were both car mad - and I know that he would never part with his dad's old number plate.

KnickerlessCackleby · 08/02/2012 12:42

Glad you don't give a damn, Soupdragon, but for someone who doesn't care, you sound v.defensive Wink

UnimaginitiveDadThemedUsername · 08/02/2012 12:43

My pet hate is BMW X5 owners with an "X5 nnn" personal plate.

But then again, I hate BMW X5 owners.

Prior to this rubbish car's release, I can just imagine their pain as they were caught on the horns of the following dilemma: "I'm a massive bellend, and I can't decide whether to annoy people by having a BMW or a useless 4x4 that will never see a muddy field." Luckily for them, BMW solved their problem for them by spotting the ubertwat niche in the market.

Butkin · 08/02/2012 12:44

My mother and father both bought personalised plates about 40 years ago. My mother gave me her plate when she gave up driving and I like it because it is short (one number and three initials) and therefore easily recognisable. It meant that when I bought my last car it was a couple of years old but because it was the latest model it looked like new with the plate - that maybe happy although I can see that would be trivial to most people. It has all appreciated by a lot of money and is worth quite a few thousand now.

I've also inherited my dad's number and have put it on hold so that I can use it in the future. Will probably put it on a new horsebox because the chassis on horseboxes tend to be very old so a new box with a personalised plate looks much better.

ChickensGoMeh · 08/02/2012 12:46

Grin @ UnimaginitiveDad

JustHecate · 08/02/2012 12:46

Grin ooh, sarky soupie.

ok, in my opinion, the reason a person pays money to have a personal plate is likely to be that they want to be seen to have a personal plate.

I can't see into people's minds, no. (god, wouldn't THAT be great!) But I cannot think of any other reason why someone would pay hundreds, sometimes a thousand (or more?) pounds to swap AE06 WXL for 5EE ME.

Clearly they want a personal plate on their car. Why? What is the reason for that? They like them? Why? They give a particular image, perhaps?

there is always a reason why someone does anything. And paying a not inconsiderable amount of money to change something that you don't ever really see but others do? Well. I can't honestly think of any other reason.

Not that it matters what I think. Or anyone else thinks for that matter. It's just an opinion.

SoupDragon · 08/02/2012 12:46

Mine is symbolic to me. It cost a huge £250 and, in the midst of a spectacularly messy and acrimonious divorce, it makes me smile because it is mine* and on a brand new car that I bought myself.

  • which is far less than I would have spent in a year if I smoked for example.
MissBerta · 08/02/2012 12:46

My Grandfather had one on the fab classic car he had for 40 years, now my dad has it and eventually I guess I'll have it. That's a nice reason to have one.

ComposHat · 08/02/2012 12:46

I am amazed that no one has bought up the old top tip from Viz:

'save money on personalised number plates by changing your name by deed poll to M 562 LAR.'

It is actually probably cheaper to do that.

shesparkles · 08/02/2012 12:47

I have one and I love it so nerrr!Grin

I got it for my 40th and it has

my first initial 40 all 3 of my initials

and it only cost £100!

I'd not have got one that was contrived in any way, and never mind disguising the age of my car, it disguises the age of me! Grin

GandTiceandaSprout · 08/02/2012 12:47

It's not something I'd get worked up about. Each to their own & all that.

But there is a woman at the local school who's plate reads saucy. She isn't. She needs telling.

JustHecate · 08/02/2012 12:48

oh, and saying what you think are motivations is not the same as bitching. There is no bitching at all in saying what you think the reason is that someone chooses to do something.
