No to all the things you have mentioned- all of which are debatable topics also.

DontDoSupportiveGF · 08/02/2012 11:52

I've got a personalised number plate AND special alloy wheels {stone the chavy bitch :o }

squeakytoy · 08/02/2012 11:52

There are a lot of things in life to which you might not see the point.. so long as it is not having a financial or emotional impact on your own life, then it really shouldnt concern you..

Obviously the person with the number plate did see the point, otherwise they wouldnt have it on their car. Grin

My ILs have them and offered to get DH and SIL both one for Xmas a few years ago. I refused to let DH have one but SIL got hers. They often make comments when we are all together and the cars are on the drive that it is "such a shame" that they can't all match. Life is too short in my opinion and I would rather have the money to do something useful with ....

Much better - if you are going to do it, nothing succeeds like excess :o

The fact that there is a market suggests that some folks have a little too much wealth kicking around.

Now I have a nice early Mumsnet reg number and it scans forwards and backwards nicely in a 12321 style, any offers?

EauDeLaPoisson · 08/02/2012 11:57

Of course not squeaky- but I am still allowed to think people are twats/berks/chavs for liking certain things that dont affect me in any way. Like burberry (shudder)

tinkertitonk · 08/02/2012 11:57

It makes a little money for the government. Plus, it's harmless fun for everyone, including those posting here. (No, I don't have one. The only person I know with one is an amusing professional gambler.)

Do they live in Essex too?

McHappyPants2012 · 08/02/2012 12:03

Alot of things are pointless things to buy, to me spending thousands on a hoilday is pointless.

Shutupanddrive · 08/02/2012 12:06

DontDickensBooksDragOn · 08/02/2012 12:09

"OP, you may as well have entitled the thread "How to make some people very defensive and cross". "

Or "Calling all judgemental twits, come and make pointless comments about soothing just because ^you" don't like it"

I couldn't give a damn whether someone has a personalised plate or not. Who cares? If they can afford one why not? Better than spending your money on, say, cigarettes and other drugs.

Blacksquirrel · 08/02/2012 12:09

A lot of the the people who own personalised number plates don't do their homework & end up paying out for illegal number plates.
All number plates have to have specific fonts & spacing & many of them don't resulting in them being pulled over for them & facing a possible fine.

exoticfruits · 08/02/2012 12:10

A complete waste of money-however people should be free to waste their money how they like.

OnlyFunctionsWithCaffeine · 08/02/2012 12:10

I still can't get past the idea of a Hoover cosy cover...Hmm

susiedaisy · 08/02/2012 12:11

Yes they are pointless I have never understood the attraction to them Confused

keepingupwiththejoneses · 08/02/2012 12:15

My stepdad has one. 4 MAL! He likes it as his car is little Jaguar which is about 10 years old but nobody can tell how old it is. Can't remember which Jaguar it is but brand new ones look exactly the same. He says it help when he goes to visit different clients ( he is an electrical engineer).

Saying that though there is a few local to me that are silly. The one that makes me laugh is a candy pink KA with BA2BIE, it even has big black eyelashes on the headlights Hmm. We get a lot of ones with EFC and LFC on them, there is also a woman who drive around in a zafira with B 4NK, she is a SAHM and has had it for about 7 years that I know of!
So on the one hand YABU but on the other YANBU!

littlemachine · 08/02/2012 12:21

YANBU
There's an A5BO round here.

Dolcelatte · 08/02/2012 12:24

i bought one for my husband about 15 years ago, a bit of an impulse buy which i thought romantic and better than another pair of socks. However,

  1. No problems in remembering his number plate (although he seldom drives)
  2. I paid £8,000 and it's just been valued at £30,000 (much more than the car it's on btw!).

So not wholly pointless although I'm sure he wouldn't have bought it for himself!

I think some personalised plates are quite witty - a bit like classic cars, not so homogenised as most modern ones.

Bunbaker · 08/02/2012 12:25

I wouldn't think any less of someone for having one, but I find them rather pointless.

Has anyone seen this one PEN 15?

ArielNonBio · 08/02/2012 12:26

EIGHT THOUSAND POUNDS??????? ShockShockShock

KnickerlessCackleby · 08/02/2012 12:28

Whenever I see them, I think, "Yay, bring on the recession". With one exception.

I saw a car once with "FAGS" somewhere in the mix on the number plate, looked in the car and saw a woman who personified it really; chealsea facelift ponytail, trackie top (with stripes along the sleeves), big hooped earings etc She really was living the dream.

The point is, most of them only vaguely point to something personal like a name, with random letters and numbers thrown into the mix, so for me, I view the culprits as only semi-literate. The money would be better spent on English lessons if not in East Africa etc.

They are also a sign that taxes aren't high enough for some of our semi-literate population.

KnickerlessCackleby · 08/02/2012 12:29

I do think less of someone for having one, Bunbaker.
