My daughter reckons this is what all teenagers do. If you agree, please vote YANBU. If you disagree, please vote YABU.

Not necessarily. I do it because it feels comfier and cleaner. It's absolutely NONE of our business what teenagers do down there. None at all.

Damnspot · 23/05/2023 08:06

My older dd was delighted to hear on Selling Sunset that Heather thought a full bush was sexy. Maybe it's coming back!

Sigmama · 23/05/2023 08:07

Merseymums, yeah right the cleaner' argument

GoodChat · 23/05/2023 08:07

Please teach your daughter about body autonomy. This conversation should have been had long before 14.

Whyarewehardofthinking · 23/05/2023 08:07

This is the perception of teenagers but, as far as I know, it isn't the case. It has been part of a safeguarding conversation in some cases, especially when photographs are included, but I wouldn't say it is common place. Again as far as I know as a DSL in a pretty big high school.

Boys too? Or just girls?

arethereanyleftatall · 23/05/2023 08:15

My dd is 14 and a swimmer. I'm so proud of her being the only one in the club with armpit hair, wearing a style of costume that doesn't involve her shaving at all, and she's still never shaved her legs and said the other day she realised at school now it's summer she's the only one who doesn't. She's a really really popular girl and no one is said a word, because she wouldn't be remotely bothered if they did, so there's no point.

Goodread1 · 23/05/2023 08:15

What a reallh weird , question is this thread !

I thing it is up to the 14 year old teenagers, as individuals, what they do in regards of feminine hygiene and public hair,

If its a thing nowaday, due to peer pressure, and skewed , (messed up misogynistic view points,

teenage boys, girls , unfortunately cause of widespread use of Internet and not stringent enough, barriers to stop accessing to inappropriate adult only gratification material,
then unfortunately this type of mindset will obviously be the consequence, just like societal idea teenagers, and grown up women having fetishism freaky size, fake boobs like Katie Price , who is obviously channelling EuroTrash tv star , with humongous Gigantic size boobies , that look like, could have breastfeed the entire world..

Fandabedodgy · 23/05/2023 08:16

That's so sad

Rightnowstraightaway · 23/05/2023 08:18

I often use communal showers and the majority of adult women I see have shaved significantly down there. I don't know about teenagers but I imagine if nothing else the majority of children therefore assume from seeing their mothers that shaving is normal.

Personally I hate it but 🤷

I've literally just had this text message from my almost 15 year old daughter. She really wanted a bikini wax as she's dark haired and we go on holiday soon. The bikini wax I don't object to but I've said absolutely not to anything more. She was a bit miffed as yes, Apparently ALL the girls relive their public hair. ( I don't believe this for a second but as a wayward teen yes I did shave mine, veeted it then grew it back and dyed it blue ). But I explained to her again about the reason she delayed shaving her legs in the first place and about how the razor companies shamed women for body hair to increase sales and how that's now fed into a pre pubescent looking mons being "in" but in reality it's deeply anti feminist. Straight away she says you are right. I don't want people to see my pubes hanging out of my bikini, but I was only going to do what everybody else does - as it's what everybody else does. Doesn't mean that I have to do it.

That's my little win for this week.

It's mandated in the religion I was brought up in to remove all public hair, and this was drilled into me as a teenager. It was only when I grew up that I realised how coercive, controlling, and creepy this was. It really makes me so sad that teenage girls are still so subject to these pressures no matter the context (& to me the hyper-sexualisation whether pornographic, or religious aren't as dissimilar as might be assumed).

Sigmama · 23/05/2023 08:20

Vegemite, its an interesting and relevant question, especially if it's something you're dealing with in your own life that's why I'm replying but thanks for your concern

All teenagers can do what ever they like to their pubic hair, it’s really not my business

This really.

There is no should in this, and I would be encouraging my DD to wait with this sort of thing but essentially it would be up to her.

Sigmama · 23/05/2023 08:22

Helenahandcart, completely agree - seeing that porn likes a denuded 'virginal' look, and religion has virgins at the centre of its ethos, not a lot of difference!

Ringmaster27 · 23/05/2023 08:22

I’d say that at 14, she can make her own aesthetic choices about her own body hair.
I was a dancer and a gymnast from a young age, and got rid of all of it as soon as it started appearing. I felt self conscious in a leotard if not 🤷🏻‍♀️

Because everyone is there and I don't shower with my eyes shut. It's impossible to not see.

Lightinthebox, if I'm getting naked in front of someone in a communal shower, I'd expect my body parts to be seen
