Found a Brut "Aquatonic" deodorant "stick" in my DH's washbag

For those born after 1976 this is deodorant that looks like a big white lipstick, and "Brut" is cheap pongy aftershave worn by men with perms and Peter Sutcliffe. "Aquatonic" was it's modern racing driver fresh Magnum PI cousin.

So..given these were actually made illegal by Margaret Thatcher in 1981 as they caused riots and brought about the New Romantics and flicky hair for all AIBU to ask my DH to remove it and buy a new one for his holidays?

There was also Jontue, and dies anyone else remember Fiji (or did I imagine that one)?

meditrina · 05/02/2012 09:18

Yes, I think Aramis was one of the most popular in the "generation" of scents which cane later and followed Brut and all the other lovely (?) smells of the late 70s

Kevin Keegan's perm in the advert anyone?

And which Jilly book's cover was essentially the "Denim" advert?

Onesunnymorningin2012 · 05/02/2012 09:18

I remember wearing Body Shop vanilla and dewberry...

I have recently started wearing Obsession again. Now I have learned how to moderate, it smells luvverly.

meditrina · 05/02/2012 09:20

They're advertising Van Halen reforming. Anyone else have that late 70s/early 80s poster of Dave Lee Roth up against a chain link fence?

SiamoNellaMerda · 05/02/2012 09:22

Oh I remember Fiji - it was positively the heights of sophistication back in the day! Which doesn't say much for the day really does it!

SuePurblybilt · 05/02/2012 09:23

If you miss the 80s scents and want to treat your gawjuss hubby this Valentine's Day, Lidl do a lovely male scent called 'Eruption'. £2.99.

waterlego6064 · 05/02/2012 09:24

He is gas lighting you OP. Trying to convince you you're going mad by making you think it's the 80s. Leave the bastard. Or get yourself a bottle of exclamation and confuse him right back.

Onesunnymorningin2012 · 05/02/2012 09:25

I only learned to scrunch dry my hair about 10 years ago. How different my life would have been if I'd known how to do it in the 80's.

Polgara2 · 05/02/2012 09:29

sparklingbrook I still have some rive gauche and giorgio at the back of my wardrobe that I occasionally smell when I'm feeling old nostalgic Grin

Oh thought of another one - red door.

Finallygotaroundtoit · 05/02/2012 09:30

'Things happen after a Badedas Bath'

Never did for me Grin

Polgara2 · 05/02/2012 09:31

Oh I had scrunch dried very big hair! It was rock solid with all the product keeping it in place!

RillaBlythe · 05/02/2012 09:35

lovecat Jazz is what my dp wears - because he inherited an unused bottle of it from his grandfather Hmm

meditrina · 05/02/2012 09:35

oh I'm glad it's not just me at remembers Fiji!

Scrunch drying was a much later thing - big from about the mid-80s.

In the Brut era, it was the men with that hair! (I've already mentioned Kevin). It was all Charlie's Angels and flick ups for the women. Elnett still going strong!

But has anyone else of the late 70s been watching the 1977 repeats of TOTP that are being shown the dry week on BBC4? Some of the hairdos on that were quite scary...

Sparklingbrook · 05/02/2012 09:35

Anais anais and Loulou were quite popular IIRC.

DottyandSpottyWot · 05/02/2012 09:40

dewberry although was the boots spray that I got! but my all time favourite "expensive" perfume was exclamation! boke!

HeatSeekingMelons · 05/02/2012 09:40

It by Lentheric is the smell of my early teens. The loos at the village hall disco reeked of the stuff. Magical :)

meditrina · 05/02/2012 09:43

Lentheric!!!!

How could I have forgotten that!

Also neat patchouli oil was (just) still hanging around - particularly on young grebos.

MovingGal · 05/02/2012 09:44

Hey! I still love Paris! but my dh comes over all frugal when buying me perfume and keeps on giving me bloody JLo!!!
BTW what is an "in " scent now.
I am just waiting for huge scrunch dried and teased and permed hairdos to come back. Big and messy I can do but I am crap with a straightener and my hair just laughs at "sleek".

Sparklingbrook · 05/02/2012 09:47

I have the Katy Perry perfume now because the bottle is in the shape of a cat, I hadn't even smelt it. Blush and I also own a bottle of 'Suddenly Madame Glamour' from Lidl which is lovely. Blush Blush Ghost for special occasions.

GiserableMitt · 05/02/2012 10:18

A friend of mine bought me the entire Charlie range back in about 1983.

I'm trying to remember the lipstick we wore. It was Boots 7 or 17, pinky-purple and shimmery. I think it had the word Shimmer in it. It was very mid-80's and I loved it.
I should go look in Boots, it's probably back "in".

bumperliciious · 05/02/2012 10:20

Oh, nearly lynched a man in the canteen at work the other who was wearing Versace Blue Jeans, the scent of my first love. I just shuffled in behind him as close as I could get away with soaking up the intoxicating smell of teenage lust.

workshy · 05/02/2012 10:26

body shop Dewberry white musk is for old ladies

or boots used to do a range of 'naturals' and they used to do a pump action deoderant -school changing rooms used to stink of a variety of fruits as we weren't allowed to use areosols!

upsydaisysexstylist · 05/02/2012 10:29

GiserableMitt, might it have been heather shimmer, boots 17, also was fond of one called pink ginger.

Lynx was the smell of my teenage years after pe the lovely boys would all share a can between them, that and the scent of body shop jojoba shampoo and conditioner as used by every girl sat in upper school assembly

AmberLeaf · 05/02/2012 10:36

Jazz was the sexiest smell in the world! Think I may get a bottle!

Jovan Musk for men. That was my cherry popper. I love that smell, very happy memory associations.

Dad wore Aramis-so def not a sexy smell for me!

I reeked of Dewberry for a while, also Poison which was very 'reeky' think it would choke me if I smelled it now.

ENormaSnob · 05/02/2012 10:39
