To be shocked my friend is calling her baby Candy?

Okay I know I am as it is none of my business really. And of course i wouldn't dream of saying anything to her or anyone in RL.

But really Candy - it just sounds like a strippers name to me. I always assumed names like these were made up when lapdancers, etc were adults - not given to them as children.

i went to school with a Candy - Candice. never thought about it!

coraltoes · 31/01/2012 10:06

There were no clues?! Does your friend not look the type to call her that? I know a lady with three "common" names...but she does wear track suits a lot so I wasn't surprised.

MateyMooo · 31/01/2012 10:07

i also went to school with a Sindy but that did make me Hmm

WilsonFrickett · 31/01/2012 10:08

I hope she's not on MN OP. With a thread title like that she'll hardly miss it...

HeartOfArse · 31/01/2012 10:08

It's quite sweet, really. I know two adult Candys and a Brandy Grin. People grow into their names, so 'm sure you wont even think about it a few months down the line. Not every baby can be Florence/Tabitha/Posh-ina Grin

imoanruby · 31/01/2012 10:08

I have a cousin called Candida and she's always been called Candy - never thought it sounded like a strippers name..

coraltoes - No I wouldn't have expected it although she is a very girly woman.

wilson - She doesn't use the internet at all, so I know I am safe!

I know a Candy. She isn't a stripper.
Glad you know yabu & haven't said what you think to anyone irl because then you would sound like my mother. On learning her gd name said 'good god, sounds like a circus performer'.

meditrina · 31/01/2012 10:12

I knew a Candida, nn Candy and have never thought of it as an odd name. It's probably more likely to be short for Candice these days though, for pretty obvious reasons.

hazeyjane · 31/01/2012 10:13

HeartofArse (hahaha, i like your name), i also know 2 Candy's and a Brandy!

Op, of course YABU.

LoveInAColdClimate · 31/01/2012 10:13

Oh dear, poor baby Grin.

I expect I will get flamed for this, but names really do make a difference. I was at law school with a Krystal. She didn't even get interviews for training contracts, despite being perfectly able and having as good a CV as most people on the course. I really do think it was her name that stopped her getting even a toe in the door. Unfair but true.

Kayano · 31/01/2012 10:13

Does she have an iCandy pushchair? Could that have been her inspiration?

Does she have a fruity middle name such as peach or strawberry?

lesley33 · 31/01/2012 10:13

Is it my age that makes me think Candy - stripper then? I am 47.

my cousin is also called candida named after a song my aunt loved in the 70's , we always have called her candy, don't sound like a stripper to me , though she is quite well off, perhaps thats how she earned it :D

canuck43 · 31/01/2012 10:14

KANDI lives round the corner, she must be 50+ and CANDY 13yrd old lives locally.

And a thousand other non-stripper Candy, now maybe they all strip in their spare time from their other careers, but I don't think Candy is particularly a stripper name, mind you I don't know that many strippers.

ComposHat · 31/01/2012 10:17

I like it solely on the grounds that it is from the title of my favourite velvet underground song. That candy was a male to female transsexual which is pretty cool.

Ciske · 31/01/2012 10:18

I like Candy, but probably because it reminds me of Candy Dulfer, famous saxophone player from the 90s.

AMumInScotland · 31/01/2012 10:18

You could always say "Are you going to give her a longer name like Candice in case she wants something fancier when she's a teenager?" to put the idea into her head. But I don't think you can say you just don't like Candy.

NeldaAufwader · 31/01/2012 10:19

There's Candy Anthony the designer who makes beautiful vintage style gowns. I've met her and she is cool her name really suits her in a very non stripper way.

SuePurblybilt · 31/01/2012 10:20

I always think Candida is worst tbh.

Maybe it'll move from stripper to bloody everywhere mainstream, like Roxy and Tallulah.

annh · 31/01/2012 10:21

Never mind Candy. Do people seriously call their children Candida!!! Why not just call them Yeast-Infection instead?!

thatboysmum · 31/01/2012 10:22

Are you sure she's not winding you up? We told people some shortlisted names when we were expecting DS1 and everyone had opinions and criticisms which was annoying. So this time round we've decided to pick random names and tell people those instead so we don't have to justify our reasons behind the names we actually like.

YABU though as it's not really any of your business either way. Not a name I would choose myself, but each to their own and all that.

YusMilady · 31/01/2012 10:22

I immediately thought of Candi Staton. I think it's a supercool name actually.
