To be shocked my friend is calling her baby Candy?

Okay I know I am as it is none of my business really. And of course i wouldn't dream of saying anything to her or anyone in RL.

But really Candy - it just sounds like a strippers name to me. I always assumed names like these were made up when lapdancers, etc were adults - not given to them as children.

"Candy came from out on the Island
In the back room she was everybody's darlin'
But she never lost her head
Even when she was givin' head
She says hey babe, take a walk on the wild side" Lou Reed

I knew there was a reason I'd discounted it.

RubyWho · 01/02/2012 12:28

Before I changed it by deed poll, I was called Honey. Thanks, Mum. I changed it whilst do

RubyWho · 01/02/2012 12:29

Oops, iphone. I changed it whilst doing my MRes because in the world of stuffy academia, it was getting me nowhere.

ComposHat · 02/02/2012 00:59

Funny that ruby I was actually born Ulysees De la Cruz, but I changed it to Compo's Hat for showbiz purposes.

SlinkingOutsideInFrocks · 02/02/2012 01:42

I would be gutted - gutted! - to be called Candy.

Anyone on this thread who would actually fancy the name for themselves?

Feminine · 02/02/2012 03:19

I'd like it, it sounds like a name belonging to a fun person.

But I also like Sindy too.

just like that type of name I guess?

I have lived in the US 6 years, that might have swayed me a bit Grin

SlinkingOutsideInFrocks · 02/02/2012 04:24

I would just burst out laughing every time I had to introduce myself, and the inevitable response was, 'no really, what's your name?' Grin

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 02/02/2012 04:45

Jesus, what an awful name to give a child. I can't imagine any self-respecting stripper/poledancer wanting to be called Candy either.

MyNameISCandy · 02/02/2012 07:45

The NN says it all. Yes, it's a name change. As Candy is an unusual name I'd out myself to a number RL friends if I posted this under my normal NN.

I'm 60 years old. I am not and never have been a lapdancer / stripper / poledancer. I had an extremely successful professional career. No one has ever asked my what my real name is. My self-respect is just fine.

Some of you need to find better ways to occupy your tiny minds.

exoticfruits · 02/02/2012 08:00

I went to school with a Candy-I can't remember her full name. No one thought anything of it. There were no lap dancers/pole dancers and we didn't know about strippers.

halcyondays · 02/02/2012 08:40

I quite like it. I would never have thought of it as a stripper's name at all.

festivalwidow · 02/02/2012 11:08

I quite like it.
Agree there are unfortunate connotations from Walk on the Wild Side..
And Lola always makes me think of the Kinks song "talks like a woman but looks like a man"..
Then again, if we all discounted names because of songs there would be a limited selection - Bills drunk and disorderly, Johns driving recklessly, Matildas waltzing all over the place... Grin

Ephiny · 02/02/2012 11:15

It wouldn't be my choice of name, but then not everyone has the same taste as me. It does sound like a nickname, so might be better if she chose Candice or something as the full name (but definitely not Candida - I know it means 'white' and is actually quite a pretty name in itself, but people will think of the yeast infection!)

Maybe if she gave a more traditional/serious middle name, the DD would have the choice of using that in the future?
