to be worried about trying anal with DH

My DH and I have a brilliant sex life. We have been married nine years and have sex at least three times a week.
We always experiment and try new things and despite having 2 children we always try and make some sexy time a minimum of a couple of nights a week.
Recently DH and I have been watching some porn (in our own privacy of bedroom of course) and we were both turned on by an Anal clip.
Now DH wants to take it further and while the thought really turns me on and some of my friends have already told me it's amazing (although one hated it) I'm worried about a few things - is it sore, is there any mess? what can I do to loosen up etc - or should I even be doing it at all?
I hope this is not offensive to anyone but any feedback would be great.
