Sure he probably was lying. Maybe he wasn't and should have had the maturity to handle it differently, who knows, but for a random stranger to handle this KID in this way is horrific!

AIBU?

I think the 'Big man' is a complete tit. An aggressive piece of shit.

The correct thing to have done is the ticket inspector to stop being such a jobsworth and move on. There's no need to hold up a train for this, the kid chanced his luck but he did buy half a ticket (better than some). The inspector should stop wasting everyone's time to prove a point.

JeremyVile · 12/12/2011 10:04

Demetersdaughter - Oh fret not dear, It will no doubt be deleted soonish.

The far more 'vile' views I objected to will stay though, I'm sure Smile

redlac · 12/12/2011 10:05

stop being a jobsworth??? really? so its okay for wee neds to jump the train and not pay a fare and the Conductor to let him off for it?

really Cheryl???

demetersdaughter · 12/12/2011 10:06

I was just chain yanking JV there's nothing better than an opinion well stated and to the point :)

JeremyVile · 12/12/2011 10:06

Hahaha donk@ a ticket inspector being a jobsworth for doing his job.

DoesNotGiveAFig · 12/12/2011 10:07

cheryl lol. Sky high fayres for all because of those darn people not paying their way! WOOT!

JeremyVile · 12/12/2011 10:08

How was the lad a thug??

God this is as good as Mumsnet gets for me...a thread where I can vehemently squabble with both sides Grin

Huzzah!

perfumedlife · 12/12/2011 10:08

redlac thats making the assumption this young man has disinterested parents and was almost left to bring himself up.Which sounds suspiciously like making excused for him, poor little boy an all. It's just as likely he was raised by over liberal, 'I'm your friend not your parent' types who don't teach responsibilities and consequences to their precious offspring. That's usually what leads to such blatent displays of entitlement.

jimswifein1964 · 12/12/2011 10:10

I just hope my kids dont grow up to be like that Sad . I know theyre going to swear whilst in teenage phase, but not as a norm, and not trying things on like fare-dodging.

perfumedlife · 12/12/2011 10:10

Cheryl your attitude is exactly the reason we have kids with problem attitudes. Let them off, move on, it's not the kids fault, let it go. For crying out loud.

demetersdaughter · 12/12/2011 10:12

It's the jobsworths fault.
The train company should employ ticket inspectors who look the other way and allow people to ride the train for free.
I hope it catches on :)

BendyBob · 12/12/2011 10:12

The ticket inspector wasn't being a jobsworth he was doing his job, ensuring people had paid the correct fare. Good on him for not backing down.

Why should anyone else on that train pay the full fare others if others are exempt?Hmm The boy was stealing something he hadn't paid for ie his train ride.

redlac · 12/12/2011 10:12

fingers crossed that you are right Perfumed and that his parents see this and feel suitably ashamed - My personal experiences of these little selfish arseholes does tend to cloud my view!

crazycrackernanna · 12/12/2011 10:12

I am just so glad my 28yo son has not grown up to think he can grab people and throw them to the ground.

GwendolineMaryLacedwithBrandy · 12/12/2011 10:12

Oh right, so as long as we swear enough and look a bit sullen we can get away with doing anything we want, including not bothering to pay? I wish I'd read this before I went to Sainsburys, I could have done without paying for my shopping today. I'm quite happy to give a bit of attitude to the security guard if it saves me a few quid.

FFS.

perfumedlife · 12/12/2011 10:15

Oh I doubt they'll feel ashamed redlac. More likely they'll froth at the force the vigilantes used against their young, victimised son and bang on about how society oppresses the weakest or some such bullcrap Smile He'll probably get counselling. Seems to be the modern panacea for all.

perfumedlife · 12/12/2011 10:17

crazycracker, is that all your glad about? I'll be glad if my son grows up not to steal and be abusive to his elders.

crazycrackernanna · 12/12/2011 10:17

Talking of supermarkets....

was in Tesco yesterday, guy in the wrong queue for self service, started swearing and shouting at poor shop assisitant. She called over the Security Guard...note not a Big Man member of the public....who calmly and professionally told the idiot if he did not leave the store,he would call the Police.
Idiot left.
Job done....properly

DoesNotGiveAFig · 12/12/2011 10:18

crazy gobshite had the same options given to him and IGNORED THEM. Pft.

crazycrackernanna · 12/12/2011 10:18

perfumed...yes he's grown up not to do thoses things, either. He was a bit gobby as a teen...maybe not searing at people...but he would defo argue the toss until blue in the face.
Grown up fine...never been in trouble...married with 2 dcs.

CherylWillBounceBack · 12/12/2011 10:20

No - it's simply not fair to the other passengers to waste their time and hold up the train just for one surly teenager.

But who knows what that kid's situation is eh? The conductors do get things wrong - I've been threatened by them too when I was 100% in the right. The imbecile didn't know his own companies rules.

And yes, frankly I would much rather the inspector just ignore it and move on then it turn into the slanging match it did, and then some thug itching to dish out some vigilante justice getting his kicks from it.

demetersdaughter · 12/12/2011 10:20

What's with this constant reference to "Big man" ?
You do know it sounds sexist and a little bitter?
He never referred to himself as big man.
And this young tosspot was not going to shift...he was asked.

crazycrackernanna · 12/12/2011 10:20

No...gobshite did not have the same options given to him. His option was idiot Superman member of the public to assault him.

perfumedlife · 12/12/2011 10:21

crazy, substitute security man in supermarket with ticket inspector, you have the same thing. It was the inspector who had the authorisation on the train to ask this young man to leave. If supermarket guy didn't go willingly, maybe security could call for back up, ticket man was on his own. And elderly.

JeremyVile · 12/12/2011 10:22

Crazy - he was given the option to leave Confused he was told to repeatedly in fact. Did you not watch the video?
