My friend and I have very different parenting styles (she's all about child-led/attachment parenting and I certainly don't take this stance!).. especially when she announces today that she wont be 'doing the whole Father Christmas thing' as she doesn't think she should make up these things and in-effect 'lie' to her DD. I suggested well some lies aren't 'bad' lies and surely she should indulge the child in this long standing tradition...

Well, my DCs believe in the nativity story because they have enjoyed it at school. I believe the nativity story is fictional but I'm not going to spoil it for my DCs by telling them so. To me, FC and the nativity story are similar things: cultural/folk tales that may add meaning or enjoyment to the festival. (Since I look upon Christmas as more of a general winter festival rather than a celebration of a religion).

It's actually not necessary to 'spin an elaborate web of bullshit' re FC. Most children will hear about him from others, not just their parents so it's probably easier for children to grow up believing the story rather than questioning it.

Having said that, I don't have a problem with what others do.
