AIBU to be irritated by this mum at DD's school? (Nativity play related)

DD is playing a star in the school nativity play (reception age) There are two other stars. When the letters were sent home to say who was playing what, DD's note stipulated that all she needed for her costume was yellow clothing and it suggested t-shirt and leggings. After trawling shops for a week for yellow arseing leggings, I finally found some today, along with a yellow top (harder than you might think in winter Angry)

Then at the school gate today, one of the other star mums said that she'd been to Tesco and bought a star costume for her DD. Now, I am annoyed for two reasons; 1. Her DD will look like the main star, the Beyonce of the stars and my my DD and the other girl will look like Kelly Rowland and the other one, and 2. DD is feeling hard done by that she has yellow clothes and a tinsel headband. I can see her point. I feel pressured to buy DD a star outfit now.

AIBU to think that the other mum is a show-off and a bit of a nob? It's a reception nativity play ffs. Just get the cheapo yellow clothes and stick some tinsel on yer kid's head.

Yes, I DO have bigger problems to worry about, yes I AM childish and I probably do need to suck it up. (Am a regular under a nc, by the way)

You sound mildly unhinged quite frankly. Unfair? Really?

It's a nativity play, they will both be wearing yellow, they will both be stars, they just won't look the same.

I don't think other mum is show-off, she probably saw it and thought that'll do. One of my boys had to go as a sheep; I had to stick cotton wool balls all over a white long sleeved t-shirt and make him a hat with ears and then find black leggings. This wasn't cheap and took a fair bit of of time. Had I found a sheep costume, I would have bought it.

Did it say you coudn't buy one, or did the letter home say here are some ideas for a star costume?

Reception you say? Calm down, really, there's years of this shit ahead

oh dear Blush i bought a star costume when dd was a star, not because i was a show off or anything, just because thats what i do, play says star i buy star outfit, just like the year she was an angel and ds is a shepard this year, both times i have gone out and bought the costume, she may be just like me and mean no harm in it at all, its just easier and alot of times cheaper

DamnBamboo · 05/12/2011 20:12

I have a statue of liberty hat thingy (don't ask) which is silver and pointy and which you're welcome to borrow Grin.

That'll top the tesco-bought star costume (fuckers!)

I'm also handing you a glass of Wine

sloppy - I'm sort of with you. Even though I am lazy and hate sewing, I would do what I was told and get the yellow stuf, because I would not want to be told off by the teachers my child to stand out.

RoughShooting · 05/12/2011 20:13

It's £6 in Asda (I just checked, while looking for a shepherd costume for ds!) and you paid £4 and spent a week trawling the shops apparently - I reckon she's the sensible one, sorry!

PosiesOfPoinsettia · 05/12/2011 20:14

I was going to make dd's sheep outfit, but I've torn my rotary cuff and am unable to sew.... So she'll have to have bought one.Smile

vincettenoir · 05/12/2011 20:15

Ynbu smug mum would have put my nose out of joint too. But I think that there's not much that can be done about it. I'm sure your dd will look really cute on the day in her headband and leggings combo.

Dirtydishesmakemesad · 05/12/2011 20:15

For my ds camel costume he is supposed to have a brown top and trousers, the costume i have put ready is brown trousers but the top has a logo so i just turned it inside out Blush now im worreid the other camels will have humps etc and my ds will be there in an inside out top...

All the single ladies, all the single ladies..........

Bellavita · 05/12/2011 20:17

Live and learn OP, live and learn...

Oooh I am so glad my DS's are both at secondary school now.

I would go out and buy a costume. I wouldn't have time to trawl and get all hot and bothered.

Hulababy · 05/12/2011 20:18

Why is it smug to make life easier for yourself and just buy the relevant costume? It's taking the easy way out that's all.

The teachers won't care either way, believe me!

DamnBamboo · 05/12/2011 20:19

I made my boys shepherd costume too.

Quite easy though since one of my husband short-sleeved stripey shorts made a perfect smock (whatever they're called) and couple with a raggedy old pair of pajamas bottoms, sandals, two canvas belts (one for head and one for shirt) along with his shepherd head-covering which was not one of my old tea-towels but in fact a nicely stitched bit of grey sheet Hmm.

Go one, link to shepherd costume and sheep costumes please - I want to see just how homemade my boys are going to look Grin

sloppyguiseppe · 05/12/2011 20:20

Snort at sweetsanta Xmas Grin

Presents I like your style. Wink

I must admit that I am also a bit irritated by it because I thought that nativity costumes were supposed to look shit knocked together by an unskilled hand. Tis part of the charm...

Not sure, Miette. She said it cost a tenner and I think that the one you linked to might be for smaller kids.

Ha! This exact thing happened last year (except Beyonce's entire class were stars) poor little Beyonce stood out like a sore thumb. On the upside it made all the staff laugh - hopefully your Beyonce has a bit of charisma and won't just stand there picking their nose...

DamnBamboo · 05/12/2011 20:22

stripey shirts

Go on

Typos! Sorry
