AIBU to be irritated by this mum at DD's school? (Nativity play related)

DD is playing a star in the school nativity play (reception age) There are two other stars. When the letters were sent home to say who was playing what, DD's note stipulated that all she needed for her costume was yellow clothing and it suggested t-shirt and leggings. After trawling shops for a week for yellow arseing leggings, I finally found some today, along with a yellow top (harder than you might think in winter Angry)

Then at the school gate today, one of the other star mums said that she'd been to Tesco and bought a star costume for her DD. Now, I am annoyed for two reasons; 1. Her DD will look like the main star, the Beyonce of the stars and my my DD and the other girl will look like Kelly Rowland and the other one, and 2. DD is feeling hard done by that she has yellow clothes and a tinsel headband. I can see her point. I feel pressured to buy DD a star outfit now.

AIBU to think that the other mum is a show-off and a bit of a nob? It's a reception nativity play ffs. Just get the cheapo yellow clothes and stick some tinsel on yer kid's head.

Yes, I DO have bigger problems to worry about, yes I AM childish and I probably do need to suck it up. (Am a regular under a nc, by the way)

If you have a couple of yellow or white towels you could sew them to the underarms of the t shirt and down the sidea of her leggings and she could stretch her arms and legs out and be a bit more star shaped.

Personally I'd add lots of flowing red and orange material and a fiery head-dress - am thinking of the sun as the ulitmate star.

Shutupanddrive · 05/12/2011 19:55

Yabu why shouldn't she buy a star costume if her dd is a star in school play? My ds is a mouse and I've ordered him a mouse mask and ears from eBay, so shoot me! Xmas Hmm

purpleturtletoise · 05/12/2011 19:55

Could it be that school have a star-shaped thing for them to wear over the T-shirt and leggings? Likewise for your DD, controlpants - an angel dress to be worn over the requested t-shirt and tights.

In which case it'll be very obvious who couldn't read the letter they were sent.

namechange24 · 05/12/2011 19:55

Another white t-shirt and pair of white tights stipulated here - I actually spent a fiver on a small adult size white t-shirt at sainsbury's - that's more than their angel costume I suspect.

It's a nightmare isn't it? Takes competitive parenting to a whole new level!

GoldFrankincenseAndTwiglets · 05/12/2011 19:56

I always buy DDs costumes but certainly not because I want her to look better than everyone else - purely for reasons of laziness and being hopeless at sewing! If I can buy something in 5 minutes, rather than spending a few evenings swearing at a needle and cotton then I will! So the other mum could very well have done it for that reason too.

This is the frust yhear that DD has been cast as something that isn't 'buyable' and I'm in a complete panic about it.

hazeyjane · 05/12/2011 19:57

dd1 and 2 are both angels, in fact when asked all the girls in year r and year 1 are angels - except one who is a camel!

the school just said the costume had to be simple, ie easy to put on.

it will be a church full of tesco's angels!

has the other mum got older children at the school? if she has, i guess maybe she just knew that shop bought costumes were ok.

sloppyguiseppe · 05/12/2011 19:58

I think it's just a bit unfair (on other people's DCs) if people don't just stick to what's been asked, shutupanddrive.

A star.... sighs, I have to make a sheep outfit. I dream of stars....

Hulababy · 05/12/2011 20:00

To be fair to the other mum I very much doubt she did it to make her DD look like the main star. I suspect she bought it as it was an awful lot easier than trying to source the yellow clothes. TBH I may well have done the same in her position, although would have probably mentioned it to the teacher just to check it was okay first.

When Dd was a sheep I admit I bought the costume and didn't go homemade - it was cheaper and easier that way.

It is the dress rehearsal for our Y1 play tomorrow and lots of the outfits came into school today. have to say we have a really wide range from homemade to shop bought, some with loads of effort involved , others less so, and some that haven't brought anything in at all. I wouldn't worry.

slightlycrumpled · 05/12/2011 20:01

I think purple may be right. At our school letters are sent out for t-shirts, tights etc as they wear them underneath the school costumes.

sloppyguiseppe · 05/12/2011 20:01

Ooh I would love to make a sheep outfit! Swap you, PancakeFlipper!

Of course yabu. Hmm You have many in happy school years ahead with that daft attitude.

Now what really get my goats is parents who stand to see/take photos of their child. don't mind parents behind you who want to see their child

sloppyguiseppe · 05/12/2011 20:03

Nah, I checked with the teacher this afternoon (whether bought costumes were allowed, as didn't want to go ahead and buy one for DD if the school had plans to "dress-up" over the yellow clothes) and she said that the stars in yellow clothes would just have the yellow clothes/tinsel on the bonce.

I am thinking of sticking my 6 yr old into my aran wool cardi, if he crawls about no-one will notice...

JamieComeHome · 05/12/2011 20:04

purple is right. They will have wings, halos etc, (probably making them in class, or the CA is ...) and the clothes they've asked for are just a base for that.

lulurose · 05/12/2011 20:04

I would have bought a costume and always do, work fulltime and don't have time to make/hunt around...just got a M and S angel costume in the post today!

Hullygully · 05/12/2011 20:04

hahahahahahahahahahha

sloppyguiseppe · 05/12/2011 20:04

Right, I'm not having any more Hmm faces thank you.

Not unless you're prepared for an epic internet benny that will leave you all crying for a time when binary hadn't been invented...

And you can stop laughing and all, HULLY, if that is even your real name.

LingDiLong · 05/12/2011 20:05

How is it unfair? Do you honestly think the audience are going to gasp in delight and break into spontaneous applause at the sight of a Tesco star costume? She really won't stand out that much. And she'll probably complain to her mum for giving her the 'wrong' costume.

JamieComeHome · 05/12/2011 20:05

X post - OH. That's a bit silly. You'll have to make some kick-ass wings at home then

chickensaregreen · 05/12/2011 20:06

The star in my DN nativity did have a full battery pack tucked in her costume for full lit up fairy light glory. I.shit.you.not. Grin

Miette · 05/12/2011 20:06

Dirtydishesmakemesad You could fulfil your angel dreams by sending your next 3 daughters to hazeyjane's kids school where all the girls in year r and year 1 are angels - except one who is a camel. Would be really unfortunate if all three got picked for the camel part.

sloppyguiseppe · 05/12/2011 20:06

"How is it unfair?"

Because I said it is.
