to be horrified by parents taking illegal drugs at family parties?

Parents disappearing upstairs and taking Coke, or smoking / inhaling cannabis while their kids are playing in other rooms, seems to be getting more and more 'usual' at parties or get togethers round here. And I feel like my other half and I are the only ones to find this upsetting and very worrying. There is one particuar couple with kids at the same school as ours who do this more than others, but they are cerainly not the only ones. And the attitude seems to be that this is quite acceptable, and if you don't agree then you are somehow abit 'square' or uptight (like being back at college...)
These parents are all in their 30s and 40s.
The worst time was when this couple had a party for their 8 year old, where about 20 other children were invited (without parents). A few other parents did stay (including me because I was concerned about leaving mine there unsupervised). During this party, while responsible for other children, this couple and a few others smoked dope, drank and took cocaine and were all completely 'under the influence'.
Their kids seem happy and well looked after, but do I have some responsibility to do anything about this, before something bad happens to one of those children :(

People have been getting high safely for goodness knows how long.

I dont think its a good idea to do it a childrens party, as its a party for children. But I dont think you can say an adult who takes coke at the party needs it anymore than an adult who has a glass of wine-perhaps they just fancied one? it isnt, have a line and become an addict.

I think drugs should be taken with care a sensible attitude.

Also, need to meet your friends ;)

One of the worst days of my life was the one after a family house camping party held by very old friends.

60 people inc 30 kids, mostly under 7 - party started at lunchtime, BBQ, games on the grass, lovely. Kids wandered to bed about 9. Every single adult hit spirits, dope and coke until 5 am - except me, had migraine and hit the sack, woken up every time they did lines in unison and started gabbling at 40 min intervals through night.

I'm up at 7am and wander into kitchen, to be seized upon by 30 hopeful and hungry small children. Somewhat befuddled, I start making toast in industrial quantities.

Some of the bigger kids came up and said helpfully 'We've found tea'. IT WAS MUSHROOM TEA, still lukewarm from mummy's final sip at 5am. Some other kids asked if they could have Nutella. IT WAS RESIN. Don't ask about the sugar.

What was worst was having to boot hordes of ravenous and uncomprehending kids into the freezing garden while I ran a drug raid whose speed would have shamed the whole cast of THE WIRE. I filled half a bin bag.

Anyway, we had toast, non-hallucinogenic cuppas and DCs remained unharmed. I binned all the drugs, costing their parents several hundred quid, and stormed back to London.

SinicalSal · 02/12/2011 15:39

Never mind 'Kids! Just say no!' we should be focusing on the parents....

Hullygully · 02/12/2011 15:41

I love drugs. If you get a load of parents that see the error, can you bung em my way?

valiumredhead · 02/12/2011 15:47

My mother informed me that we have mushrooms of the magic variety in our garden - she really is an old hippy as I didn't have a clue Grin

corygal · 02/12/2011 16:38

Thank you ladies. The bit I enjoyed most, albeit done while hyperventilating, was hurling packets of coke into the nearby field and burying brick-like lumps of hash in the compost...knowing the various parents would be too ashamed to ask for the huge stash back in front of their kids Xmas Grin evilly.

i dont think its appropriate if it was ovious to the kids but if they dont see it then whats the harm.
we do however have a rule in our house if 1 parent is getting shitfaced then the other 1 dont so theres always some1 looking after the kids although they are normally asleep early on theses days cos they cant keep up with mummy when she takes them to the park or takes them shopping
bring on the weekend lol
