For getting annoyed by my mum saying "college" all the time??

Sounds a bit petty but my mum constantly refers to University as "college". Maybe I am being anal about it (probably) but I come from a non academic family. Out of 7 siblings, only one aunt actually went to university (and none of my 12 cousins have either so it was always a bit of a battle against the odds for me. I'm not massively academic so it took alot to actually get IN university, 2 years of education just to get to interview. Then I had to apply amongst 800 people for 200 places. I was one of the successful ones but it was bloody hard and I am proud of myself for getting in.

It's a big deal for me.

Yet my mum constantly refers to it as college and talks about it as if it's just a few gcses Im doing (its a science degree). I and my sister correct her all the time but she does it that often I'm sure she's doing it on purpose.

Yesterday for instance:

mum - "what were you doing on the 26th?"
me - "it's a night out with people from uni"
mum - "oh yes, you're going out with your college friends."

I don't always correct her because I think it sounds a bit twattish but why does she do it??

I constantly get "oh, are you at college today? do you have an assignment to do over the weekend?"

errr ... I have an assignment to do over the next 3 months, not the fecking weekend.

It could be put down to her having no experience of academic stuff but it's SO annoying and she manages to get everyone's place of education right! for instance "oh when your sister finishes college she might go to uni!" hmm you sure she won't just stay at "college" forever? grrrr

Your right it does sound twattish.
HTH

GwendolineMaryLacey · 05/11/2011 10:03

Hmm, I went to university and always referred to it as college, still do if it comes up in conversation. "I used to get that bus to university" sounds a bit twattish. Don't know why.

ChocHobNob · 05/11/2011 10:04

It is a bit petty Grin

Do you think she's doing it to belittle your achievements?

talkingnonsense · 05/11/2011 10:04

Well if you go to a fancy Oxbridge type uni it will be collegiate and you will belong to a college- so just practice saying yes, at st Johns/ magdalene/ any other college name and you will sound extra clever!

limitedperiodonly · 05/11/2011 10:05

YABU to use the hideous word Uni. Stop it.

movember · 05/11/2011 10:05

Ok I'm being a twat.

But yes Choc, I think she does. When I passed my driving test she told everyone I'd got my "provisional".

I think my entire family are frightened of anyone succeeding.

Why not just ask her outright and tell her how you feel?

When i was at uni, i didn't like the term, 'uni friends', to me it sounded as though we were up ourselves, although all of my family went to uni, or equivalent (non UK).

hellsbells76 · 05/11/2011 10:07

I feel your pain, my mum does that too. I've already been to university once (english degree) and she was happy enough to call it 'uni' then but now I'm a student midwife she seems convinced I'm 'training' at 'college'. Drives me nuts, not least because I'm being worked far harder now than I ever was last time!

PattySimcox · 05/11/2011 10:07

The only reason that I can think for this is that as post 18 education became more widely available a lot of FE colleges / Polytechnics adopted University status, but to some peoples minds it is one and the same thing?

gamerwidow · 05/11/2011 10:07

Is she actively trying to undermine you or is it just what her generation called University?
I went to University in the early 90s and we referred to it as college then. It is petty to make a fuss about this unless there are other issues too.

movember · 05/11/2011 10:08

See it's an odd one because my children's dad apparently recently ranted that I'm a twat because I asked him to look after the kids whilst at University. What on earth am I supposed to say?

"can you look after the kids whilst I attend my educational establishment?" Grin

Perhaps if you are living at home and your uni is close to home it used to call itself a college? Many universities have a college former life....

Its hard to get out of the habit of calling it a college if you've known it that way for 30 years or so

Be proud of yourself, tho, whatever your mum calls it - you've done really well!

clam · 05/11/2011 10:14

Maybe she's trying to object, in a passive-aggressive way, to your calling it "uni."

It's uniVERSITY!!!!!! We are not living in an episode of Neighbours.

pictish · 05/11/2011 10:19

How is saying university or uni wanky?
That's what it is!

FFS - people can't bear to see others doing well sometimes, so they have to poke fun and heap scorn on it. What a shame.

OP - I suspect your mum is just saying college because that's what she's always said. However if she IS determined to undermine your achievement you'll just have to rise above it and revel in your degree. Good for you btw! x

brianmayshair · 05/11/2011 10:20

Is your mum Irish? Irish people refer to university as college.

pictish · 05/11/2011 10:20

Everyone here says uni and did so long before Neighbours came along.
It's not worthy of note at all.

SardineQueen · 05/11/2011 10:21

I have to say I'm with clam.

Uni is just awful.

And university is referred to as college by lots and lots of people.

valiumredhead · 05/11/2011 10:21

See it's an odd one because my children's dad apparently recently ranted that I'm a twat because I asked him to look after the kids whilst at University. What on earth am I supposed to say?

Are you dropping it into every conversation you can? Wink Possibly that's why.

SardineQueen · 05/11/2011 10:21

No-one said uni down here before neighbours.

Honest.

SardineQueen · 05/11/2011 10:22

Everyone said college Confused

mayorquimby · 05/11/2011 10:24

I'd say it's yabu, but then again I'm Irish and the two terms are synonyms

GypsyMoth · 05/11/2011 10:25

I'm taking great pleasure in telling all and sundry about the university open days dd and I have been attending!!

Brought up 5 dc on my own and I am PROUD

If you were my dd op, then I would be embarrassing YOU with overuse of the word!! Well done.

Are you inviting her to graduation ceremony? She will suddenly become very proud of you then I bet! Especially when she has a cap and gown photo to show her friends

MumblingAndBloodyRagDoll · 05/11/2011 10:25

Uni is far worse...call it University and then you can moan abouot your Mum.

GypsyMoth · 05/11/2011 10:25

Oh and YANBU!!!

woobmc · 05/11/2011 10:26

I'm studying at university. I refer to it as 'going to school'. What it gets referred to as really isn't that important to me. When I get my hat and scroll I'll put pictures of it everywhere though...
