Talking point on the Wright stuff just now, RG claiming that he is doing nothing wrong by using the word "mong" in his comedy and it merely means a stupid person now rather than Downs Syndrome. I was no big fan of his before but now I actively loathe the smug cunt.

OP posts:
DownbytheRiverside · 22/10/2011 07:18

Mong as ab insult to people with DS, and used as an insult linked to stupidity in others was around in my childhood. I remember my mother going ballistic about its use in 1968.

JanePumpkin · 22/10/2011 07:56

Yes exactly. 'mongrel' is fine. It's Aus slang. A mongrel is a dog of mixed/unknown breed, I don't have a problem with that as it's usually a term that describes an animal.

Alf wasn't talking about disabled people. It's a different word with a different derivation.

peggyblackett · 22/10/2011 08:06

I can't believe that there are MNers on this thread defending RG. Fortunately they are in a minority.

RG is an absolute cock.

NormanTebbit · 22/10/2011 08:13

I saw Ricky Gervais on TV doing his 'science' tour and I didn't think he was very funny at all. It was all a bit meh

This mong thing is just an attention seeking exercise. He thinks he's defend g free speech. Decent people don't use the word anyway. Controversy over nothing.

seeker · 22/10/2011 08:14

here's a linkto Richard Herring's blog. His Tuesday and Wednesday entries are very insightful on this. Andninreckon he could do with a bit of support. Brave for a jobbing comedian to take on anyone asnpoweful as RG.

Oh, and the genius involved in The Office was Stephen Merchant.

FanjoForTheMuahahammaries · 22/10/2011 08:19

At least this thread shows the decent people are in the majority and those who say 'I didn't know the meaning so it's fine' or 'I (with my NT kids) hate this PC shit' are in the minority (both of these attitudes speak to me of people who don't care if others are offended as long as they're not, selfishness and insensitivity in the extreme).

NormanTebbit · 22/10/2011 08:34

I find it amazing that when we are facing the worst financial crisis since the 30's (according to DM anyway) the stealth privatisation of the NHS etc etc instead of satirising the dire situation many people are in, millionaire comedians are fighting for the right to say offensive slang terms about disabled people.

DownbytheRiverside · 22/10/2011 08:36

It's why he's a soft and blobby comedian. He's not up to coping with anything but soft targets and a dirty snigger.

Hungrydragon · 22/10/2011 08:46

I can't believe that people have found out many people have had this word thrown at them or their children and have said how hurtful it is and they are still defending the use of it and plan to continue using it.

Those who are saying it's derived from the Australian use of the word Mongerel, it isn't and we are not in Australia, and Gervais ain't doing dog impressions.

Anyone insisting they have a right to continue using it because they didn't know plenty of people see it as an abusive word, need to take a long hard look at themselves Sad

I agree with the cunt theory

Sevenfoldedbloodybodies · 22/10/2011 09:07

ffs a mongrel is adog
that is what Alf meant

SuePurblybiltFromBitsofCorpses · 22/10/2011 09:13

Oh fgs. I was joking about Alf saying 'flaming mongrel' because to most of us in the UK, that's where we heard it first/most. That has nothing to do with Mong. Nobody is suggesting anything about Alf.

My post could have been worded more clearly - I meant that Mong is clearly from Mongoloid, and offensive on every level. IMHO RG knew/knows this and is a knob for using it and a knob for continuing to defend it.

GreenEyesandNiceHam · 22/10/2011 09:20

at the tarnishing of Alf Stewarts good name

Grin
SuePurblybiltFromBitsofCorpses · 22/10/2011 09:22

I know. Ailsa is so going to get me.

BupcakesandHaunting · 22/10/2011 09:23

OMG don't bring Alf into this. Ailsa will be spinning in her grave, Gawd rest her soul.

SuePurblybiltFromBitsofCorpses · 22/10/2011 09:23

Oh, I forgot she died. So she either has to get me on Halloween or send Duncan the one with the face like a rabbit.

Sevenfoldedbloodybodies · 22/10/2011 09:24

"clever people know it is alright to laugh at taboo subjects"
taken from an interview with the wanker himself in the DM

Sevenfoldedbloodybodies · 22/10/2011 09:25

SuePurblybiltFromBitsofCorpses where is duncan the devil child?

SuePurblybiltFromBitsofCorpses · 22/10/2011 09:26

Is that from today seven? The utter wanker.

So we're all jealous of his success, stupid and bitter now? He is a nice chap Hmm.

BupcakesandHaunting · 22/10/2011 09:26

I can hear her bones clanking together now, trying to escape her antipodean grave and traverse the seas and continents to come and haunt you for sullying her Alf's good name.

BupcakesandHaunting · 22/10/2011 09:26

I don't think I remember Duncan

ssd · 22/10/2011 09:26

where I live, mong is a term thats never used, I've never heard it in rl

now hun, thats another story Grin

personally, I saw a bit of RG doing stand up comedy and thought some of his jokes were a bit much, maybe as he hasnt got kids he can make up jokes about them in a way a mum/dad wouldnt?

he is quite funny, loved the office and idiot abroad, just didnt much like his live stand up

SuePurblybiltFromBitsofCorpses · 22/10/2011 09:26

Duncan was locked under the stairs or something for years, the poor lamb. They only let him out every few months.

Shurrup Bjups, I'll have nightmares.
