to think Ricky Gervais is a twat of the highest order

Talking point on the Wright stuff just now, RG claiming that he is doing nothing wrong by using the word "mong" in his comedy and it merely means a stupid person now rather than Downs Syndrome. I was no big fan of his before but now I actively loathe the smug cunt.

OP posts:
FabbyChic · 21/10/2011 18:54

Love Ricky Gervais. Like the fact he doesnt give a fuck what people think, only the minority don't like him.

Im sick of all this political correctness shit.

My son is 18 and even he loves Ricky.

FabbyChic · 21/10/2011 18:54

My son calls me a mong from time to time too!

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 21/10/2011 19:00

Yet more wise words fromFabby Hmm

SuePurblybiltFromBitsofCorpses · 21/10/2011 19:02

Isn't it just brilliant when people don't care who they hurt? Love that Hmm

sickofsocalledexperts · 21/10/2011 19:12

Fabby and others - even Ricky has admitted the word is wrong. He is appalled by being associated with people like you (and you need to teach your chldren some manners).

ra29needsabettername · 21/10/2011 19:16

I watched him do a gig before he was really famous and still at xfm. It was truly vile with loads of 'jokes' about people with downs syndrome. I can't remember what he said but remember feeling really upset by it and the fact that people were laughing.
If I hadn't seen that I may well have liked the office etc but could never see him on tv without remembering that experience.
I don't know what I think the line is with humour and of course some humour does come from things that are difficult or uncomfortable but going for the most vulnerable just seems closer to bullying and cruelty.

Dawndonna · 21/10/2011 19:20

Perhaps he'd like to go to school with my daughter and explain to the idiots that don't know her, that 'mong' 'spaz' and 'spacky legs' are post modern.
Actually, I'd like dd1 to have a chat with him, she's bright enough to embarras even the most thick skinned moron.

PosiesOfPoison · 21/10/2011 19:22

Fabby are you familiar with a sensitivity bypass?

And are you really daftpunk?

troisgarcons · 21/10/2011 19:34

Right. I decided to look it up.

oxforddictionaries.com/definition/mong

As I said 12 million posts ago it's current usage is as a devivative of 'mongrel' - an Australianism, brought over here by their dire soap operas.

It is in usage by teenagers, in this part of the country anyway.

'Monged' is also a term I've heard for drunk &/or stoned.

Off to urban dictionary now, which will be an experience.

www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=mong

Several definitions, but this is fairly accurate in accordance with street slang

"The modern Mong however is a total fuckwit, who deserves nothing less than complete humiliation for their idiocy. That includes all those dope smokers too, who relate being 'monged' to being chilled and mellow."

MillyR · 21/10/2011 19:40

The first three definitions on urban dictionary all say that mong is similar to spastic. Wikipedia also says that is a derogatory term for people with DS.

wigglesrock · 21/10/2011 19:45

Well, wikipedia still has it as a perjorative term for those with Down Syndome.

FlangelinaBallerina · 21/10/2011 19:45

Can we please not have any more posts from people saying they haven't heard mong be used to mean a special needs person, so Gervais must be right? To anyone who's written this, maybe you haven't, but others have. It is still going on. Definitely, unequivocally, not a matter of opinion- people are still using it to mean this. Whether you personally happen to have experienced this is irrelevant: this thread now contains the information you need to make you aware that it is happening.

Fabby, fuck off.

Bakelitebelle · 21/10/2011 20:00

Ricky Gervais and his ilk are just 21st century Bernard Mannings.

People with learning disabilities are regularly bullied, assaulted, tortured and some are killed every single year in this country. This sort of 'humour' is the thin end of the wedge.

Fabby, you're a tosser

SpringHeeledJack · 21/10/2011 20:09

Flange, I thought your sentence was going to finish:

Can we please not have any more posts from people saying that the Office was brilliant

Grin

and what Fabby charmingly calls "all this political correctness shit" is just a way of being decent to one another, not an infringement of your civil liberties

TheBestWitch · 21/10/2011 20:29

I liked The Office. And someone posted earlier about the fact Gervais is shit at acting. We now know why he was good in The Office - it's because he IS David Brent. The guy who wrote it with him must have been pissing himself.

JanePumpkin · 21/10/2011 21:14

TroisGarcons, you can usually find the definition you want somewhere in an online dictionary.

I don't think that really proves anything in this context. For a start, the word 'mongrel' in terms of Aussie culture wasn't really commonplace over here until, well earliest 1985ish.

'Mong' as a shortening of mongoloid was around well before that.

It's just convenient isn't it

HardCheese · 21/10/2011 21:30

Maybe you would find it easier to get your head around, Fabbychic, if you replaced 'all this political correctness shit' with 'using language that does not cause needless hurt to others'? Or is that too much like hard work?

Like some other people on the thread, I've only fairly recently become aware of the word 'mong', far less its specific as a pejorative term for someone with Down's Syndrome, but that in no way makes it a less disgusting usage. The fact that I wasn't aware of that meaning is totally irrelevant to its offensiveness.

Sevenfoldedbloodybodies · 21/10/2011 21:33

there is always a dickhead who posts on threads like this and says
Im sick of all this political correctness shit.
they are the twats that make decent people like my dd's life unpleasant.

SuePurblybiltFromBitsofCorpses · 21/10/2011 21:39

Mongrel was only ever used by Alf from Home and Away. True fact.
It comes from Mongoloid, He clearly meant it that way. anything else is just trying to weasel out.

mutha2two · 21/10/2011 21:54

Clearly rj is a bit thin on ground with new material. Was a bit nauseated by his cover on sat times this week. Nasty grautious whiff of exploitation IMO The Office seems quaint by comparison but frankly so much comedy these days is depressingly low rent.

rhondajean · 21/10/2011 21:54

Gervais is right next to Alex Salmond on my "men I would never tire of hitting" list.

unpa1dcar3r · 21/10/2011 22:36

Fabby of course he gives a fck what people think. he will care more about what people think than someone not in the limelight who doesn't make their living (or money) from their popularity or unpopularity.
Comedians (and I use that word very reluctantly with the likes of him) rely completely on peoples opinions and what people think of them.
So to say that you love his 'couldn't give a f
ck what people think' attitude is an oxymoron.

This isn't about being PC, this is simply downright disrespectful. If it was the word 'Paki, Nigger or Coon' he had used he would be called xenophobic. He is a version of that and his fear comes from things he simply hasn't the brain power or compassion to understand.

He is a twat, plain and simple.
BTW if my 20 and 22 yr old children were to use that word or any similar words I would brain them. And the same goes for their friends.
However, my children- and their friends- are intelligent and sensible and compassionate enough not to use words like that. Says a lot eh!

MudandRoses · 21/10/2011 23:03

Blimey - maybe I was incredibly naive but i've used 'monged', monged out, 'feeling mongy' (as in, tired, spaced out, dopey) for years - I never made the connection that it had ANYTHING to do with DS people - are you sue thats the only derivation??

Sevenfoldedbloodybodies · 21/10/2011 23:04

but now you know I assume you will not use it

YouHaveToCallMeNighthawk · 22/10/2011 07:14

Whoa whoa whoa! You've gone too far now, making out Alf from Home and Away hates disabled people! He says flaming mongrel! He also says flaming galah. Is that something we should all Be Offended about too?
