Talking point on the Wright stuff just now, RG claiming that he is doing nothing wrong by using the word "mong" in his comedy and it merely means a stupid person now rather than Downs Syndrome. I was no big fan of his before but now I actively loathe the smug cunt.

arwen1506 · 21/10/2011 10:24

I think words do change, I didn't know that mong was a word associated with Downs syndrome.

An episode of south park shows an episode where the lads are using the word fag, school thought they were being homophobic but they were using it to describe, annoying people like Harley division riders, riding around making loads of noise.

MissVerydead · 21/10/2011 10:26

Try saying "I'm going out for a fag" in a restaurant in New York and see what happens...

I still cringe at that memory... Ugh...

MoaninMinny · 21/10/2011 10:27

there was a radio phone in on bbc about this yesterday. There was someone saying their friend from Mongolia was called this, and some wally sighed and said oh thats appalling. LOL

All along RG has said he never means this word to mean people with DS.

BupcakesandHaunting · 21/10/2011 10:27

Joey - Joey Deacon

MissVerydead · 21/10/2011 10:29

Well, chuff me. That's crap. I'm disappointed in him.

JanePumpkin · 21/10/2011 10:30

I went out with someone who used the word 'monger' about someone. I was a bit shocked and told him, to stop, it was unpleasant and a nasty word to use.
He proceeded to use it again a few days later, so I dumped him. It was just one example of why he was a tw*t.

Sidge · 21/10/2011 10:32

I bet Ricky Gervais and Frankie Boyle are good mates Hmm

FrankNCock · 21/10/2011 10:34

'All along RG has said he never means this word to mean people with DS.'

Have you seen the faces he pulls when he says this word? Identical to playground bullies mocking people with DS or learning disabilities.

JanePumpkin · 21/10/2011 10:37

Yeah, 'lol' Hmm So funny isn't it...

btw it isn't short for mongrel. It's short for mongol, which was the old fashioned term for someone with DS.

I agree teens don't always know the derivation of terms like this when I was a teenager my friends used to say we were 'monging out' in front of the TV, etc. and I thought it was just a meaningless, humorous word...so I used it too.

Had I understood where it came from, I'd NEVER have used it. I wish someone had told me.

Sevenfoldedbloodybodies · 21/10/2011 10:39

yanbu
he is a wanker, not funny, just a unintelligent up his own arse wanker

Pagwatch · 21/10/2011 10:40

'all along RG has said he never means this word to mean people with DS'

See this actually makes him look more of a twat. Because if he genuinely didn't know why does he tweet picture of himself pulling faces? And then say 'blimey. I didn't know. I'll stop using it then'

He is like a tantruming child. I am waiting for him to blame someone else.

WilsonFrickett · 21/10/2011 10:40

It doesn't matter what he means though, does it? If I pranced through MN calling everyone a n***r and, when I got called on it, said 'oh, it doesn't mean the most horrible word you could ever use to describe a black person, it actually means pink marshmallows' it doesn't mean I would be correct, or justified in my usage.

And yes, gay has changed usage (if not meaning) and is changing again to another derogatorry term. So hardly a great example.

When I was 14 we used words like mong and joey in the playground. Now I am an adult I don't because I realise they are terrible, hurtful, cruel words. Ricky Gervaise should try growing up too.

WilsonFrickett · 21/10/2011 10:41

^^ 'it doesn't matter what he says he means'

Pagwatch · 21/10/2011 10:41

Ricky Gervais is a cunt.

That does mean witty and amusing comedian doesn't it?

Oh.

Well I think it means something else. So cunt cunt cunt cunt....

FrankNCock · 21/10/2011 11:06

Pagwatch, he already has blamed everyone else.

a) for 'willfully misunderstanding' his humour

b) for being uptight and PC

c) for just being jealous of his success

Such a twat, I won't be able to watch him ever again because I can't suspend disbelief. Like with Tom Cruise.

befuzzled · 21/10/2011 11:07

i've always thought that, even when he was just an XFM monkey. It constantly amazes me that the universe saw fit to make him rich and famous in la la land as it has surely made hime even more of an unbearable arse.

NinkyNonker · 21/10/2011 11:12

He's just a shock jock. It isn't big and it isn't clever, and I like my comedy a little more intelligent.

SuePurblybiltFromBitsofCorpses · 21/10/2011 11:12

I am baffled by it as I have seen him in videos for disability employments equality and comedy mocking discrimination and prejudice.

I am now assuming that his scriptwriters are all for equality and anti-discriminatory and he is a cock.

WilsonFrickett · 21/10/2011 11:32

His producer is a wheelchair-user IIRC. So he's either made a mistake and can't bear to own up to it, or he geniunely believes that he, Ricky Gervais, can change the meaning of words all by himself, as he is a God.

Cock.

HerScaryness · 21/10/2011 11:36

he he, sorry OP:, but YABU.

This is not a case of being Unreasonable.

But until we have a Am I Stating the Bleedin' Obvious Topic, I suppose YANBU

Grin
SuePurblybiltFromBitsofCorpses · 21/10/2011 11:39

If he did genuinely believe that the word was no longer offensive, then why did he take up the immediate sulky, defensive stance? Why not say 'Nooooo, I am RG, look you at all my comedy mocking bigots and discriminatory types. I would never cause offence intentionally - very sorry'? Instead of bolloxing on about the change of the meaning and all.

Either he was doing it for the notoriety or it was unintentional but he is too arrogant and stupid to admit it. The cocky cock.

CumbrianCooBeastie · 21/10/2011 11:39

As with WilsonFrickett, I am not sure his claiming 'Mong' doesn't mean Down's anymore, but a lazy, useless, couch-potato waste of space is going to be seen as a flattering connection of ideas.

Unless he thinks that being called a 'Ricky' would be an excellent change of use, now meaning a lardy, sulky, arrogant whiner.

HeidiKat · 21/10/2011 11:43

HerScaryness, I know it might seem obvious to most rational people who have compassion, but sadly that doesn't mean everyone shares that view, there were people on the phone in this morning justifying it and indeed there is someone on this thread who thinks IABU as "he is funny" Confused.

OP posts:
Pagwatch · 21/10/2011 11:46

We should have an "am I stating the bleeding obvious' topic

It would be a nice home for the 'aibu to be upset at seeing a child beaten in the street this morning' posters

Hardgoing · 21/10/2011 11:47

I never used this word before at school and didn't know what it meant or any history- does everyone know what it meant/means?
