Talking point on the Wright stuff just now, RG claiming that he is doing nothing wrong by using the word "mong" in his comedy and it merely means a stupid person now rather than Downs Syndrome. I was no big fan of his before but now I actively loathe the smug cunt.

OP posts:
Pagwatch · 21/10/2011 15:29

He is kind of stuck now isn't he.

His only defence is that he is deeply stupid. And that, when it's real meaning was explained, he was too hysterical to withdraw or retract.

encyclogirl · 21/10/2011 15:30

She's got him wriggling on the hook now. G'wan Nicky Clarke! All of his followers are reading him right now and he's about to have an apology forced out of him.

"To anyone who has been hurt by your tweets, what would you say?"

encyclogirl · 21/10/2011 15:34

"Well all I can do is apologise and hope they don't confuse those people's views with mine. ( meeting now back in an hour)"

You BEAUTY Nicky Clarke!

GoEasyPudding · 21/10/2011 15:34

Ricky Gervais used to be the genius who made the office (with Stephan Merchant)
He has now become an arrogant man both on tv on off.
In a proffessional context he has lost a lot of respect due to the way he throws his weight around.
It was only a matter of time before his true nature became public.

Pagwatch · 21/10/2011 15:37

Nicky Clarke is handling it beautifully.

He is wriggling like a hooked worm.

SuePurblybiltFromBitsofCorpses · 21/10/2011 15:39

Is Nicky Clarke the woman who previously sung his praises in the Guardian? I bet she feel really let down Sad.

encyclogirl · 21/10/2011 15:39

Love her.

All the thugs, bigots and bullies that follow him are now left wondering why their hero has foresaken them.

Catkinsthecatinthehat · 21/10/2011 15:44

He's got form for bullying the disabled though. He took the piss out of a woman called Victoria White on his radio show becuase she had a severe facial disfigurement and had featured on a TV programme about coping with that. She complained to XFM, so he went on and made her the subject of attacks on two further shows.

Tosser.

Tortington · 21/10/2011 15:45

he comes across as a smug cunt actually. didn't like the office
didn't think it was genius
didn't like his stand up routines

do like him on chat shows though

still think hes a cunt

ghostsoverbones · 21/10/2011 15:46

right ok, after the 'enough about me - what did you think about me' tweet. I give up - he's a cunt.

Pagwatch · 21/10/2011 15:55

Oh ghosts, I am with you.

'Just out of curiosity do you think the media have been mean to me'

I wasn't aware he'd ever been anything other than smug and irritating, and not particularly funny

encyclogirl · 21/10/2011 16:18

Oh be fair Yorky there's much more to him than that. He's also, cruel, a bully, arrogant and nasty.

Sevenfoldedbloodybodies · 21/10/2011 16:19

encyclogirl pmsl that is good

kingprawntikka · 21/10/2011 16:26

What I just can't understand is that even if you think a word has moved in meaning( which it hasn't ), surely if you are a decent person once your error is pointed out to you, you'd apologise and never use it again, Not defend your actions. If you know you are hurting people then why continue .. unless you really don't give a damn about any one but yourself.

ouryve · 21/10/2011 16:28

YANBU. It's not harmless and pulling the faces to go with it isn't harmless. He knows exactly what he's doing - poking fun at some of the weakest members of society. He would never in a million years dare to treat racist or homophobic language in the same way and suggest it was harmless or trying to take words back. He's a rancid twatwaffle.

TheBestWitch · 21/10/2011 17:09

He absolutely does know it's offensive but he's squirming cos he's been pulled on it.

Conundrumish · 21/10/2011 17:44

What a twat. I was actually listening to him when it was broadcast and got up to turn the TV off. He is vile and his argument is very weak because the jokes don't make sense if you substitute other meanings that he said he intended.

He wasn't actually acting when he played David Brent, was he!

Esta3GG · 21/10/2011 18:16

It doesn't take much to totally fuck up a healthy media career - just ask Angus Deayton. Bye bye Gervais - don't let the door smack your ample arse on the way out.

sickofsocalledexperts · 21/10/2011 18:29

Ricky's friend, comedian Robin Ince, has just posted a really well written article on Twitter in which he admits his own pal has been an arrogant arsehole and has let Hollywood success go to his head. I also liked Sean Lock in the Sun today saying that the only reason Ricky uses the word is because he knows it's taboo, otherwise he would just use "idiot". So all his protestations about the word having moved on are rubbish, as he is using it for shock comic value, and he knows it.

minimisschief · 21/10/2011 18:32

i have never met anyone or heard anyone making fun of downs syndrome by referring to them as mongs.

however i have heard people use the term for years as an insult to stupid people. So i would have to agree with him and his usage of the word.

flippinada · 21/10/2011 18:41

YANBU, basically what everyone else has said (except the very few on here who agree with him).

The 'I don't think its offensive so its not offensive' comments speak for themselves.

I suspect there's a bit of self-justifiction going on there. You know..my kids use it and they are nice kids so of course it's not offensive....

trulyscrumptious43 · 21/10/2011 18:46

The term mongoloid refers to the eye shape of some Down's people as being similar to a person from Mongolia. That's what we understood as children (people were heard calling them Mongols) and we knew it was wrong to insult anyone in this way.
I met a lovely Tibetan man with Down's last week, so he doubly qualified for the eye shape comparison.
RG is an insufferable child (though that is insulting to children really). I understand that The Office was very good but I couldn't bear to watch it because of his supercilious sneering attitude. The character he played wasn't acting in any sense, it was himself. Perhaps now that is over we realise that he has no talent for being anyone other than himself, but I don't understand why he gets the airtime he does.

flippinada · 21/10/2011 18:50

Justifiction? Of course I mean justification. Oops. Or do I mean Opps?
