AIBU, SN, Waitrose and the car park. I must be stark raving mad, but here goes ...

I shop in the same branch of Waitrose every other day and have done for years. All the regular staff know me and the guys who collect the trolleys are among them.

This evening half the car park was totally empty so instead of driving round the one way system shown by the arrows I nipped into the "down" lane, parked in the first space and got out of the car.

Cue fairly large trolley bloke who has SN of some sort (not sure what they are because he never talks to anyone as far as I know) shouting "Eh! Eh!" at me and pointing at the ground. I couldn't work out what he meant and just looked confusedly back at him. After a minute or so of this he walked over and shouted right in my face "One Way, One Way" and pointed at the arrow. I said that there were no other cars there so I couldn't see the problem. He followed me round the car, still shouting "One Way" at me while I hunted for my bags. It was after dark, there was no one else around and I felt quite intimidated so after I had scarpered to the shop I mentioned it at the customer service desk. I just said that it was quite an outburst and it had left me feeling a bit shaken.

Now I am not sure if I did the right thing. I don't think he will lose his job over it or anything that drastic, but should I have simply thought "the guy has SN, he obviously needs people to follow rules, I've broken them and I should suck it up", or was I right to complain about him shouting at me?

He definitely has SN of some sort, but I just don't know what they are. I have spoken to him on many occasions (commenting on the weather, thanking him for collecting my trolley) but I have never had a response. That was probably why I found this evening's incident so alarming - it is the first time he has ever spoken to me in maybe 10 years that he has been working there.

To be clear, the car park doesn?t have paving or anything that separates the lanes ? it is literally a case of marked spaces with arrows showing the way round for when there are other cars there. The nearest car was maybe 50ft away ? I just literally drove in, grabbed the nearest space going and that was that. It so happened that it involved driving 6 feet up the ?wrong? lane.

YABU.

You would have been better off apologising to him for your mistake and then forgetting about the incident. I hope the poor guy doesn't get into trouble.

SN or not, perhaps he is rightly proud of his responsibility for looking after the car parking and trolleys and understandably didn't take kindly to you not following the simple rules.

Sorry but you can't justify telling on him when you were in the wrong, you have come on here and taken the piss out of him and you think it's funny. Frankly I don't.

Yes UABU.

You can make this better though, by going back to the shop retracting your complaint to the Manager and offering your apologies in person to the chap that was looking after the car park.

You've made yourself look a bit foolish in front of people you are acquainted with and go to frequently. Fix it.

Nothing wrong with his taste in people then at least....

I think we are all aware of what supermarket car parks are like and how they are laid out - we did not misunderstand what you did, dont worry, we got it immediately.

However, I didnt realise road signage was only for when other cars were there.

And unless you are qualified to do so you simply must referring to your assumption of this persons abilities.

You were in the wrong but you complained about him when he informed you. Nice.

I have been known to go against the arrows but I accept IABU when I do so. FWIW I don't think the OP is intentionally taking the piss out of people with sn, but it certainly comes across. YWBU to report the incident I'm afraid.

New acronym: YABN (you are being naive) to post on here and not expect this to kick off.

Sorry. Should read "comes across that way"

[put neck on block]

Why shouldn't he shout at her FGS?

OP was in the wrong - BUT - would it have been okay to shout at her if the employee had no SN? Would it have been any less/more intimidating?

YANBU

I would have felt Intimidated. It's all about proportional response and, prima facie, his wasn't.

all the people screaming "YABU" - assume you have never, ever, ever done 31 in a 30 zone??? (which btw is a far far more serious "crime")

Fucking hell people, get a grip.

Are you for real?
Incidentally you can't choose to ignore road signage nor the highway code just because you don't see any other vehicles moving in your vicinity... What about pedestrians FFS!

I think you need to realise that many people with SN are only comfortable when rules are in place and are followed. Op; you broke a rule and this gentleman reminded you.....YABU to think this warrants a complaint

OK, the MN jury has spoken. I am going to go back in tomorrow, say that I was in fact being BU and retract my complaint.

I was not in any way attempting to take the piss out of the guy concerned. I simply relayed what happened. I mentioned the SN issue only because it was the point that worried me. If there were no SN issues I would have had no hesitation whatsoever about complaining.

Thanks for all the views because - as I posted originally - I genuinely wasn't sure whether I had done the right thing.

Really, do none of you ever go up the wrong lane in an open, empty car park??

Report

She already assumed he had SN yet she made no allowances for it at all, if that were me Id have said to the guy sorry, sorry didn't see or something like that, not gone and reported him to customer services.

Too much time on her hands is her problem.

If she had not drove the wrong way he would not have had cause to talk to her, and to him it probably was just talking.

There he was minding his own business doing his work when some arsehole drives the wrong way, he knows what the arrows mean she clearly does not, wants to save 6p in petrol by saving 50ft of driving.

Jeeez.

Sorry the OP comes across as taking the piss out of someone with SN.

She hasn't even apologised when posting again for her post coming across that way, what does that tell you eh?

Report
WilsonFrickett · 18/10/2011 23:01

prima facie his response wasn't proportional

You're right Poppadum, it wasn't. I would have thought something along the lines of 'FFS are you actually blind or just cretinous?' would have been more apt, rather than just 'Eh! Eh!'. I also particularly liked 'they draw pictures of arrows for people who can't read' upthread but I probably wouldn't have been able to think of that under pressure.

HTH.

has rI don't think you were being unreasonable. Yes you broke the rules in an empty carpark, so what no one has the right to hound you for it, which it sounds like he did. SN's are irrellevant to being harrassed, it wasn't his job to police the carpark guidelines

YWBU. Some idiot decided to do similar this morning (in a waitrose car park too! Shock) and nearly hit me when I was on foot crossing a marked zebra crossing. She was going far too fast for a car park too.

You don't have a mini do you?

Report
AllThreeWays · 18/10/2011 23:08

no where has the OP said she laughed at his SN, but she was followed around for minutes being shouted at by a big bloke.
