So, Sunday lunch at a friend's yesterday. A couple that we know slightly are also invited. The woman who is very bright and very pleasant for the first hour, drinks so much that she is literally unable to speak (but doesn't stop trying), and we all carry on with lunch pretending that everything is normal and not laughing where she can see.

Is this normal? In any way?

The level of self denial is astounding.

Hully - oh sorry, misread that and thought you knew her better. Oh dear. Come out for lunch with me instead, and we can both fall into the foliage together.

Cheerful, hallooo and have a hug. You are lovely. I love all your stories, but am particularly impressed that you PMd a MNer while under the influence. Was it Justine, perchance?

Hoh yes.

It's so so hard though. My dbro has been dry for a year, his longest yet, and I admire him just for getting through each hour.

Hully
You could easily be talking about a friend of mine. Very responsible but once she starts drinking she can't seem to stop until she is beyond plastered and even then will keep trying to drink.
Is very hard to deal with as she is not full blown alcoholic but a binge alcoholic instead. Friends have confronted her but it is very hard for her to go from binging to getting merry.

Yes, they don't take kindly to having their glass gently taken away. I don't know what the answer is - avoidance is mine!!
