To think Waiterose is for posh people?

TiggyD · 21/09/2011 21:57

I was a bit Hmm to see the medium sized Waiterose near me sells 12 types of humus. I take it their regular customers would be upset if there were only 8 types of humus to dip their free range organic corn chips into.

They do have a range of 'budget' products: their "essential" range. It includes humus! I think humus is OK but I'm not entirely sure if it's "essential".

We used to call the 2for5quid pizzas 'emergency pizza', I always bought them when they were that price and kept them in the freezer for emergencies.

Perfect lunch is hommus and carrots, total prep time zero. Open fridge, get carrots and hommus, eat. Is very yummy to.

ouryve There's a large Waitrose in Hexham (where I shall be found later today) if you consider it worth the drive. You have to use the Tesceurgh car park across the road as the Waitrose one is not free!

twinklytroll · 24/09/2011 00:40

I shop in Waitrose and am as far removed from posh as you can get. We tend to spend less in there as if we go to Tesco we end up buying lots of non food stuff that costs us more. We also use everything that we buy whereas from Tesco it goes off or we waste it. I also hate queueing and there is no need to do that in Waitrose.

I also use the local butcher, farm shop etc - nowt posh about that either. Even us common folk believe in supporting local business.

I hate hummus.

Lidl Christmas is Amazing. We used to get our liebkuchen delivered from a bakery in Germany but I don't bother now: Lidl's are better anyway.

If I could be moved by binbags, I would be by Lidl's. Except they smell of fag ash; does anyone know why? It mystifies me.

I prefer to have the choice of 12 different types of hummus to 12 different types of pot noodle or microwave chips.

Alouiseg · 24/09/2011 09:01

To the poster who was moaning about the lack of Beef curries in Waitrose. Could it possibly be because cows are sacred in India?

NinkyNonker · 24/09/2011 09:11

I made some red pepper hummus yesterday, yum.

RoxyRobin · 24/09/2011 09:34

Have just remembered that DS told me he saw Jarvis Cocker doing his shopping in a Waitrose in Sheffield. So it is for 'common people' too.

I asked him what JC had in his basket - he looked at me incredulously and said "How should I know?". That's men for you.

EdithWeston · 24/09/2011 09:40

I've just looked on Ocado.

They have 22 different types/brands of Hummus.

< I've bought 8 of them Blush >

At Sainsbury's you have to park wander around a large site to find a parking ticket machine that works, get to trolleys and then find you have used all your change in the parking machine, queue for 10 minutes at customer services for change for a fiver for the privilege of getting a trolley. Inside the Store you then risk life and limb due to children on scooters. At checkout you queue again to have the shoppong thrown at you or to hear a huff because you aren't packing 150 quids worth fast enough. Unload shopping and then spend at least 5 minutes finding a trolley with the same size pound slot to get your pound back. Over the road on Garratt Lane Wandsworth you drive into Waitrose car park, take a ticket, get a trolley (no pound required because the pepole here are too posh to nick the trolley. There are lots of helpful staff and the whole experience is more pleasant. Yes, it costs an extra twenty five pounds, but as I work full time it is worth it because what takes 90 mins at sainsburys takes 40 mins at Waitrose. Also the quality of foodstuffs is much better - I only resent paying more for tins and non foodstuff, etc. But sometimes I am organised and get that delivered from Asda. In Putney Saino staff are delightful and it's a better experience than waitrose which is badly laid out and very very crowded - more money in Putney!

electra · 24/09/2011 10:02

I sometimes shop from Waitrose and sometimes Tesco. Tesco fruit and veg is rubbish. Waitrose do a melon I particularly love.

Morloth · 24/09/2011 10:11

Is that charentais melon electra? I really miss that. Have got some lovely rock melons here, but nothing quite as sweet as the charentais ones I used to get from Waitrose.

Waitrose is one of the things I miss from the UK, it was nice, the staff were always pleasant and chatty, things were laid out in the way I think, nice lighting etc.

Red2011 · 24/09/2011 10:23

I'm not posh, and I shop at Waitrose. I have a choice of Sainsbury's or Waitrose which are about equidistant from where I live. But if you go to Sainsbury's after around 7pm the fruit and vegetables look as though they have been thrown around the shop/trodden on, and they are invariably out of milk/bread or some other essential. If you go to Waitrose after 7pm the fruit and veg still look fresh...but there may only be 8 types of houmous available! Wink

catgirl1976 · 24/09/2011 10:54

I don't think any supermarkets are for "posh" people. I don't see Waitrose as much better than any of them. It's still mass produced rubbish where you don't know the producer. I don't shop at supermarkets for meat, veg, bread etc and only for household stuff where I need to.

GeorgeEliot · 24/09/2011 12:58

You pays your money and you takes your choice.

We are lucky to have a choice.

ShoutyHamster · 24/09/2011 15:55

I like the idea of Waiter Ose

Should be Maitre'd Ose if we're being really posh though surely?

ouryve · 24/09/2011 15:58

Zukiekat - it's dairy free. Or supposed to be, anyhow. I'm lactose intolerant, so before the advent of lactofree I ate a lot of it.

ouryve · 24/09/2011 16:01

Roxierobin - Hexham is a very, very long (about 60-75 min) drive, either through Consett or involving having to get past the Metrocentre. We usually satisfy ourselves with the M&S at the Metrocentre (except when it's evacuated, as it was this morning)!

strictlovingmum · 24/09/2011 16:12

Waitrose is fab, we are not posh, but often go and shop there, quality is cut above the rest, and their fruit and veg lasts longer in the fridge.
I also shop in tesco, sainsbury when I can, but Waitrose is closest one to where we live.
More expensive, yes it is, but you do get what you pay for, also if you exclusively cook everything from scratch, so meat, veg, fish it is almost on par with all the other supermarket.
Their ready meal section is very expensive, I don't tend to buy that staff it is not one for us, DH is continental, he doesn't understand ready meal concept.
As for humous I can make my own, and it is probably lot better then 12 different varieties then they stock in Waitrose or anywhere else for that matterGrin

OpenMouthInsertFoot · 24/09/2011 16:14

I don't know about 'posh' people, but it's certainly for people with more money to spend that I do! Grin

RoxyRobin · 24/09/2011 16:22

ouryve What a nightmare! 'Metrocentre' is a dirty word to DH so we avoid it wherever possible.

Misspixietrix · 24/09/2011 17:00

I'm not posh in the slightest, and will delibaretely make a trip to waitrose if I'm in the city to get the DC's and I their smartie cookies grapes, fruit etc. Always a little excited when we get to go shopping in there, what? I'm afraid I don't get out much! Wink x

it's as far removed from 'milky' as anything!

it's made from chick peas, garlic, tahini (sesame seed paste) lemon juice and olive oil primarily, with other 'flavours' for added kick
