To think Waiterose is for posh people?

I was a bit Hmm to see the medium sized Waiterose near me sells 12 types of humus. I take it their regular customers would be upset if there were only 8 types of humus to dip their free range organic corn chips into.

They do have a range of 'budget' products: their "essential" range. It includes humus! I think humus is OK but I'm not entirely sure if it's "essential".

I am a Waitrose/Ocado girl... love their service and products. I shop in other shops too if out and about, but W/O is my first choice always.

worldgonecrazy · 22/09/2011 09:00

I love Waitrose, not because I'm posh, but because if we buy food from there we are less likely to waste it. Ours is full of normal people, must be the most boring Waitrose in England.

TrillianAstra · 22/09/2011 09:00

rubyrubyruby - I think I've spent more time in the little Waitrose than the proper one (used to work 5 minutes from it) which has only increased my Waitrose love. Little Waitrose is a million times better than the millions of little Tesco or Little Sainsburys that they seem intent on building. And cheaper, because everyone knows that Tesco Expresss/Metro charge more for the same old TEsco stuff.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 22/09/2011 09:01

Nope, BOOTHS is deffo posher and less pretentious than waitrose.....the restaurant in ours is fab.....names a. Bit twatty tho ( the Artisan) I woll let them off for that tho since they do a bloody good cheeseboard. Wink

southeastastra · 22/09/2011 09:02

it's weird as i live near one of the richest towns in the uk, yet we have not twatrose.

so i think really really posh people shop at independent butchers etc and farm shops

Grin

there were only two waitroses within half an hour from me when i was younger, still is iirc

QOD · 22/09/2011 09:06

Waitrose is just so incredibly expensive compared to sainsburys or Tesco/Asda

also there was a REALLY annoying girl who works there and says "Yesssss please.....fank yew" really loudly and singsongly who got on my tits.Jus spotted her in flippin Sainsbury last week

baguettecut · 22/09/2011 09:07

Ahh, never seen those though, NotADude...You have educated me today!

baguettecut · 22/09/2011 09:08

I sometimes brace myself for a visit to Tesco, I did a whole shop there, spent the same as my Waitrose shop, no joke.

Chandon · 22/09/2011 09:08

Lidl Vanilla yoghurt is dream stuff, sadly not always available.

I like waitrose, M&S and lidl

HATE tesco and Sainsbo, always end up with rotten stuff or really tough "steaks".

PamSco · 22/09/2011 09:09

I'll go anywhere I can buy veggies loose. Waitrose sells more loose fresh produce than the other supermarkets near me. I weep daily for a decent green grocer. If that makes me a posh twat, so be it...

It will always be.

BRING BACK GREENGROCERS

baguettecut · 22/09/2011 09:09

Without adding extras, I meant to add! Bought what I'd normally buy.

TequillaMockingBird · 22/09/2011 09:12

Oi, UK people: Where I live (out in barbarian lands) I go to a huge warehouse-type arrangement to buy 10kg bags of rice and pasta, and sacks of potatoes to feed the ravenous horde at home. Hummus gets bought in big tubs, a dinky packet wouldn't make it through one snack-time. Do you guys have an equivalent?

(buying meat there is an experience. You buy half or a whole animal in boxes. It's cut up but jumbled and unlabeled so I have been getting great training in eyeballing cuts of meat.)

Honeydragon · 22/09/2011 09:18

I have a green grocers, butchers, delicatessen, independent fishmonger and a Waitrose

stripedcat · 22/09/2011 09:20

I love Waitrose

.. considers whether she is posh........

ElizabethDarcy · 22/09/2011 09:23

Me too Honey! Plus a bakery :) Within a 5 minute walk.

Honeydragon · 22/09/2011 09:28

no Bakery here now, but that is a good thing, they got rather crap and the town voted with their feet. They tried to blame twatrose, but the fact is, all the aforementioned independents survived, the sandwich shops survived and two new farm shops opened and have flourished since Waitrose opened.

SardineQueen · 22/09/2011 09:30

sea there is a very good reason for that!

Given that they are the same company and all Grin

Deflatedballoonbelly · 22/09/2011 09:34

Booths is not posh, it is indeed for the northerners! Grin after reading about it here, when we went to the Lake District in the summer (?!) I went to one just outside, Carnforth I think. It wasn't posh, I was gutted! And it needed a refurb. Just saying, like. Hmm

Waitrose is not posh either, I shop there!

BaronessBomburst · 22/09/2011 09:49

I would hope there would be at least 12 different types of hummus in a Waitrose. Our local supermarket in the-arse-end-of-nowhere-Dutch/German-border village sells two different sorts. No idea who buys it though as they're all meat and potato eating farmers round here. DH thinks it's just us and we obviously eat a lot

gremlindolphin · 22/09/2011 09:56

I love Waitrose! Its only more expensive if you buy expensive things but normal things are the same as other supermarkets. Lovely helpful staff, and usually quieter than others. I don't do online shopping as I think a food shop at Waitrose is a bit of me time - I know thats sad!!

spookshowangellovesit · 22/09/2011 10:01

i use to buy my litre and a half of 15 pounds vodka in there because their own brand stuff was good....so ummmmm no not just for posh people.
