To think Waiterose is for posh people?

TiggyD · 21/09/2011 21:57

I was a bit Hmm to see the medium sized Waiterose near me sells 12 types of humus. I take it their regular customers would be upset if there were only 8 types of humus to dip their free range organic corn chips into.

They do have a range of 'budget' products: their "essential" range. It includes humus! I think humus is OK but I'm not entirely sure if it's "essential".

Wish I had a gamekeeper & a garden gardener...

SardineQueen · 22/09/2011 08:09

I laughed when I say the "essentials fillet steak" Grin

I shop there because it is local and I like to walk. The food is good and I feel like they are probably a bit kinder to the animals than others (although am probably wrong!).

SardineQueen · 22/09/2011 08:10

And I admit that walking through the doors of John Lewis is the closest I get to a spriritual experience Hmm

I blame my mum she started us young.

NinkyNonker · 22/09/2011 08:21

Of course you need more than one type, there are different flavours! (Roasted red pepper is best.)

I love Waitrose, Tescos and Asda don't do do red pepper hummus. Sainsburys do though.

TheOriginalFAB · 22/09/2011 08:23

YABU

Waitrose is for anyone who wants to shop there and I am sure there is more than 12 flavours of soup and you don't sneer at that.

RoxyRobin · 22/09/2011 08:27

Tesco and Asda have me wild-eyed and head-achey within ten minutes. Waitrose is so soothing.

The aren't-I-a-perfect-parent brigade get up my snot-box, but at least their offsprogs are more or less under control, unlike the Asco Asbos.

bringbacksideburns · 22/09/2011 08:28

"Allegra, Allegra- put that kumquat down!!" Grin Grin Grin

Loving the insinuation earlier in the thread that 'proper' cooks go here for ingredients btw. I'm a good cook but they don't do Waitrose oooop 'ere. What am i going to do??????!!! It's a wonder my family and i have survived on the cheap shite is is assumed we buy from other supermarkets Shock

They're ALL supermarkets though... that's not posh it's just shopping for the masses; Waitrose just has dinkier trollies.

I don't understand why the lovers of deli food don't go to a proper delicatessen rather than buying mass-produced mulch.

I'm a supermarket tart and proud of it - I buy these things from THESE supermarkets and never interchange:

Waitrose: Davidstow cheddar, strange-shaped pasta,, rib steaks
Tesco: Printer inks, potato skins with cheddar and bacon (M&S ones are horrid)
Asda: Mango fingers, pain-au-raisin
Sainsburys: 'Deli' bacon (Edwards), cheese-topped rolls, takeaway curries without rice (fab!)
Co-operative: Chicken

... and if I buy bearnaise sauce in a jar, I buy it from French supermarkets only.

I think that people who religiously stick to one supermarket are a bit, well... lazy, shall we say? Grin

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 22/09/2011 08:33

No, it's for people who think hey're posh.

BOOTHS is far better, BOOTHS is posh.......and the cafe in ours is a posh restaurant which is licensed.

NinkyNonker · 22/09/2011 08:34

I go to the farmshop for our meat and veg...where do I fit?!

TrillianAstra · 22/09/2011 08:36

If by "posh" you mean people who pay attention to how to spell the name of the supermarket they are complaining about then yes. :)

You are misinterpresting the Essentials range. It's their cheaper range. They don't really expect you to believe that the items are essential. If that were the case you'd have to think that Tesco "Value" baked beans were good value, when they're really just half a can of baked beans filled up with watered-down sauce. Not very good value IMO.

TrillianAstra · 22/09/2011 08:41

Booths isn't for the posh, Booths is for Northerners.

CavemanDaveIsVeryBrave · 22/09/2011 08:41

"Madonna! Madonna! Fetch some lard!"

Actually heard in a local Tesco. Albeit about 20 years ago.

I don't think that Waitrose is posh or foody enough, actually.

We finally have one here (actually two, as they've opened one of their 'Little' stores as well) and I have been cruelly disappointed.

Most of what they sell, IMO, is simply packaged better. I'm not convinced re the quality. But there is definitely a better class of shopper Grin

And I feel so virtuous dropping my green token in the charity box.

BecauseImWorthIt · 22/09/2011 08:44

Although I was very taken by the Ostrich egg, on sale for £25!

Laquitar · 22/09/2011 08:44

What are the 12 types?? You cant start something and then withold information.

I've only tried olives and red pepper ones.

porcamiseria · 22/09/2011 08:47

Whatmeworry · 22/09/2011 08:53

DCs say they do the best meatballs and bacon of all of them and i find the fod is usually on the higher quality end. Hummus increasingly p*sses me off as i just want the plain stuff and they keep on shoving other bitz in it.

Downside is the horde of Loud Mummees as others have noted, so I switched to Ocado. Sorted :)

baguettecut · 22/09/2011 08:56

12 types...let me demonstrate my Waitrose nerdyness!

Non-organic, organic, roasted red pepper, Moroccan, Peri Peri, caramelised onion...

Nope, I'm stumped at six!

NotADudeExactly · 22/09/2011 08:56

To be fair: I did see this mum at my local Waitrose recently who would repeat the name of each item she put in the trolley three times for her toddler. And then show him a card with the word written on it in large letters. She must have properly prepared the shopping trip at home.

That one did strike me as hopelessly middle class - which is okay, because my own mum was just like that in many ways. :o

NotADudeExactly · 22/09/2011 08:58

Baguette:

Kosher with pesto
Kosher with chick peas - in two sizes
Plain Kosher

NinkyNonker · 22/09/2011 08:58

Roasted tomato, roasted garlic
