To think Waiterose is for posh people?

TiggyD · 21/09/2011 21:57

I was a bit Hmm to see the medium sized Waiterose near me sells 12 types of humus. I take it their regular customers would be upset if there were only 8 types of humus to dip their free range organic corn chips into.

They do have a range of 'budget' products: their "essential" range. It includes humus! I think humus is OK but I'm not entirely sure if it's "essential".

When I lived somewhere with all 4 supermarket's, waitrose was posh, tesco was pretty normal, sainsbury always seemed a bit grubby and poorly laid out and asds was just like tesco really but huge.

Bluegrass · 22/09/2011 12:11

Things you can rely on in life:
Death;
Taxes;
The periodic appearance of a thread on MN concerning the social grading and hierarchy of supermarkets!

I shop in Tesco 'cos it is closest to home, Sainsbury because it is bigger than the Tescos, Waitrose 'cos it is close to work, M&S if I happen to be near one when I need something or any one of a number of corner shops which are closer than any of them.

Of course I keep a stock of Waitrose bags to use at all of them - would hate to be mistaken for a peasant...

Aldi sell the mini marshmallows, in BIg bags Grin and they do three kinds of hummus.
I've never heard of Booth's so they can't be as northern as all that...
Does anyone ever actually only go to one supermarket and get everything there? Nothing left out, nothing "oh we want some X but they don't do it here/it's not nice from here" Or do we all end up going to several different ones depending on what it is we actually want?

LaWeasel · 22/09/2011 12:23

We only have quite a small waitrose and tesco. We go to tesco first and then get everything they don't stock/I know is cheaper from waitrose.

Sometimes it's really odd things, like fruit and veg. I had to go to waitrose for an aubergine last week. Hmm

Waitrose don't do fig rolls either.

wonkylegs · 22/09/2011 13:19

They tend to tailor their stock to the shoppers so you can get posh and not so posh waitrose / tesco/ sainsburys
Yet to find this with asda tho
The tesco nr my DB is full of Afro Caribbean stuff (local population) mine full of booze (Newcastle Grin) and the one in the posh student area = lots if finest ready meals
The waitrose nr DH's GP is middle of the road posh the one nr my Dad extremely posh (and sells amazing cakes and wine) ours not so much (city centre)

grovel · 22/09/2011 13:30

I shop in Waitrose and can report that quite a lot of plebs clutter the aisles.

cuteboots · 22/09/2011 13:37

I have to say the Tescos where I live is always fairly quiet yet Waitrose doesnt seem to have suffered any loss of sales . It also doesnt have a very good range of food and I do sometimes sneak into Waitrose!

CoralRose · 22/09/2011 14:15

I once saw a group of travellers/gypsies/whatever, in Waitrose once. Mother wearing no shoes, 5/6 children following, testing the food as they went along. Was hilarious watching the reaction of all the other (v posh) shoppers.

southeastastra · 22/09/2011 15:45

sardine yes i know they are the same company, that's why i don't really get the 'posh' connotations. i don't see john lewis as a posh shop.

vj32 · 22/09/2011 15:49

zukiecat: I had good service at an Asda recently. But my local Asda is a scary place. I worked there a few years ago and there was a fight on my till between two fat men with trolleys full of economy sausages and burgers. The fresh meat was never wrapped properly so blood regularly leaked out onto my hands. They were a crap employer and I fainted on a hot day because we couldn't take a break, they didn't have enough chairs and we weren't allowed bottles of drink while on the tills. Gave the customer a bit of a shock.
They are a huge store and don't have enough staff to help anyone...

My local Waitrose has an impressive range of hunting/shooting/country magazines for all the hunting/shooting country types in their huge 4x4s. Waitrose in Sunningdale is the poshest I have ever been in.

MrsBuntyCulDeSacQueen · 22/09/2011 15:51

FWIW OP, today a shopped at both Waitrose and Iceland. Both were selling humus. Do you have to be posh to go to one and not the other? As far as I'm concerned some shops are great for some things, others are great for others. I shop across the whole WaitroseIcelandAsdaSainsburyAldiLidl spectrum. Don't see what being posh/ not posh has to do with it.

AKMD · 22/09/2011 15:52

Pus Really?!

I live in the middle of two Waitroses. One is in a vairy posh town and the carpark is full of 4x4s and mums with highlights, sunglasses on their heads and jumpers draped over their shoulders talking in VERY LOUD VOICES about Sebastian's violin grade or bitching about someone or other. The other one is in a fairly normal market town. I would say the first one was 'posh' and I don't go there because I feel like a peasant but I frequently go to the second one on mini marshmallow raids and don't feel like I need to put on airs.

Pootles2010 · 22/09/2011 15:57

Aldi & Waitrose combo is the best way

I can't be the only one who gets a touch overexcited when Waitrose do their 2 pizzas for £5 thingie? Soooo good...

I too only shop at Aldi/Lidl (about once every 4 weeks) and Waitrose (once a week).

I buy the basics (cereal, cheese, biscuits, tea/coffee, frozen pizzas etc) at Lidl/Aldi and the lovely fresh fish, meat and fruit/vegetables (and humous!) at Waitrose.

And I stock up on German Stollen and Lebkuchen ahead of Christmas at Lidl - they have the best selection in the whole of the UK Smile.

ouryve · 23/09/2011 23:27

It's a pretty standard part of your diet if you're not someone who thinks a meal has to have meat in to be complete. Have you ever tried houmous? It's pretty addictive. Garlicky. Creamy. Just plain delicious.

ouryve · 23/09/2011 23:39

If we're doing the perennial supermarket comparisons:

ASDA: Hate our local one. I want to curl up and cry in it. DH occasionally braves the one next to where he works, though. He's a common miner's son and can hack it.Wink
Tesceurgh: Our closest big supermarket at 4 miles. Visit about 3-4 times a year, with my arms firmly folded, resisting the urge to murder someone because they do the best range of vaguely satisfying chemical crap in the region
Waitrose: One opened up in Durham in 2005 and closed 2 years later. Actually miss it because it was small but civilised.
Morrisons: One about 20 miles away and haven't been in it for 6 years, it's so awful.

Actually divide our shopping equally between Sainsburys and M&S (Drive past Tesceurgh to get to both).

issynoko · 23/09/2011 23:48

Our little Sainsburys local in rural Norfolk sells 5 types of hummus. Shame they didn't have any Lapsang Souchong though.

hmc · 23/09/2011 23:56

Am not posh but am an inveterate snob and prefer to shop with my peers - shallow? Yes probably
