To think Waiterose is for posh people?

TiggyD · 21/09/2011 21:57

I was a bit Hmm to see the medium sized Waiterose near me sells 12 types of humus. I take it their regular customers would be upset if there were only 8 types of humus to dip their free range organic corn chips into.

They do have a range of 'budget' products: their "essential" range. It includes humus! I think humus is OK but I'm not entirely sure if it's "essential".

I'm Scottish so the Waitrose thing passes me by. We only got one in the last few years.

I don't go there at all at home despite it being my nearest supermarket as the slightly further away Sainsbury's is my 'home' territory.

However I now live in London. I have rapidly embraced Waitrose - there is a local sainsbury's but it does not sell the products I want to buy and the quality of some of the food is naff and the choice of fish isn't nearly as good as I'm used to. It isn't working out significantly more expensive overall either which has surprised me. However the day I received my Waitrose credit card (you get cashback) I knew I had truly joined the middle classes.

However the 'essential houmous' does make me laugh!

The only thing I have to go to Sainsbury's for is their value dark chocolate (33p/ 100g) which is the best thing for baking IMO. The 'posher' cooking choc. in waitrose is too rich and my chocolate brownies aren't nearly as well received if I use it. It also costs 4 x as much.

LaWeasel · 22/09/2011 10:04

Waitrose is totally posh.

I like it there though. Grin

I used to shop there when we were living on benefits + food vouchers as it was a choice of them, a tiny Iceland (crap for meal planning as they hardly sold anything that wasn't ready meals) and a M&S in walking distance!

It isn't necessarily anymore expensive depending on what you're buying. Their bananas are much cheaper than Tesco's for eg.

Honey... farm shops! Oh how I wish I had one of those nearby... I used to in my old home.

Booths... only been to one..in the Lake District... lovely shop! Kinda like Morrisons imo.

LetThereBeRock · 22/09/2011 10:09

I don't even want one type of hummus. I can't stand the stuff. I do like a variety of yoghurt flavours however.

I'm always bemused when people described Asda as being full of 'chavs' and feral children. The three branches I've frequented are nothing like that ime. I've yet to see anyone behave like a chav. One is a very wealthy area, one in a nice area and one in an ok area, but they all seem fine to me.

Morloth · 22/09/2011 10:10

Where ARE the greengrocers in London?

I lived in the poshest of poshvilles and had 2 Waitroses to choose from and only one smallish Sainsbury's.

But no greengrocers and only one very limited butchers.

I spend hardly any money at the supermarket now. I stop at the greengrocers, then to the butchers, then to the bakers then to the supermarket for the leftover bits, all in the same shopping centre.

The greengrocers and butchers are more expensive that the supermarket but the quality is much much better.

vess · 22/09/2011 10:12

They are not different types of hummus, just hummus with different flavours added.
By the way, the Aldi hummus tastes more like the real middle-eastern thing.

youmeatsix · 22/09/2011 10:17

surely buying hummus makes you lazy not posh
its not exactly difficult or time consuming
i love roasted red pepper or caramelised onion
both quick & easy

LaWeasel · 22/09/2011 10:18

hummus is not tasty no matter the flavour.

PamSco · 22/09/2011 10:19

I like Sainsbury's as it keeps the riff raff out of Waitrose.

I do shop in Asda as I like to feel beautiful.

Two classic jokes of our consumerist times...

When I was growing up (in North England) Tesco was a huge treat. It was the Kwiky for everyday stuff.

I am very jealous of people with independent shops, I've moved to an area that has a lovely shopping street - full of trinket, fancy goods, cards, wee presents for unspecified occasions and no food. All because there is a giant 24 hour Tesco at the end of the road.

AKMD · 22/09/2011 10:21

YABU, they are the only place I've found that sell mini marshmallows. My life would be over without marshmallows in my hot chocolate. I am definitely not posh.

LaWeasel · 22/09/2011 10:23

Our local butchers is just draw dropping. £25 for a free range chicken? Do they feed them gold?!

LaWeasel · 22/09/2011 10:23

not draw - jaw.

ShowOfHands · 22/09/2011 10:24

Our Waitrose sells Angel Delight...

AKMD · 22/09/2011 10:25

oo-er LaWeasel, no need to go that far!

I am absolutely not posh, at all, but Waitrose is my supermarket of choice. When we first moved out into arse-end-of-nowhere-ville I would drive the 8 miles to Tesco or 10 miles to Asda, but now I have seen the error of my ways and shop in the Waitrose in the nearest small town. The fish counter is good, and the stuff that I buy doesn't seem to be any more expensive than Tesco. I don't really buy anything ready made or processed, which is where I imagine the price difference would be most noticeable. I'm also very lucky to live in a village with an excellent (and cheap) greengrocer and a fantastic butcher.

And then once a month I brace myself and go to Tesco for 30kgs of dog food, a vat of olive oil, washing powder and 20 tins of tomatoes.Grin

TheVermiciousKnid · 22/09/2011 10:30

Our Waitrose sells Angel Delight...

I'm quite sure our local one does. Of course I'm far too posh to buy it.

I love Waitrose. Blush I also get an organic veg box and shop at the local farmshops. Blush Blush

Mishy1234 · 22/09/2011 10:32

I love Waitrose, but think I prefer Booths (might be that I'm always on holiday when I go there though). We always seem to spend a fortune for not that much in Waitrose though, so go to Sainsburys mostly.

My favourite is our local deli though, which also has a great cafe. Princess Anne goes there, so can't get much posher than that Wink

NinkyNonker · 22/09/2011 10:34

Our farm shop is brill, I can get a week's worth of meat, veg, dairy and fruit for around £30 inc a roasting joint. Off there this avo.

LaWeasel · 22/09/2011 10:38

I am so jealous of people with great farm shops/independent places. I just seem to live in one of those really irritating places where everyone has jumped on the "they'll pay more for local/independent produce" bandwagon and it's so much more expensive than the supermarkets.

TheVermiciousKnid · 22/09/2011 10:42

We have at least 4 farm shops within 20 minutes (by car). One is very posh - nice, but rather expensive. Not really a proper farm shop. One is small but has good and really local produce. Another one sells mostly fruit and veg from a local(is) organic farm (as well as some rather overpriced other stuff). Never been to the other one.

elliejjtiny · 22/09/2011 10:49

I usually go to waitrose to use the loo. My friend's DD has coeliac disease so sometimes I buy the gf chocolate muffins that she likes. I love the cakes and ice lollies in there too. I do the weekly shop in tesco and then get bread, milk etc in asda as it's near ds1's school. I'm not posh.

wordsonapage · 22/09/2011 10:49

I live in the ME and I have never seen flavoured houmous out here....

perhaps that's why we only nave the aforementioned two varieties.

Deflatedballoonbelly · 22/09/2011 10:53

Whats ME?
