To keep 4yo DS off school for my 40th birthday?

DS has just started reception class and we're keeping him off school for 3 days as we're going away this weekend, get back Monday, then Tues it's my birthday. Am I being ridiculous to worry about keeping him off school for 3 days so early in the new school year? He's settled in ok and really seems to enjoy learning, gets a little bit clingy when I drop him off but soon settles once I've gone. We just thought we'd keep him off for my birthday too as there are many years ahead now when he'll be in school for it. DH is off for the day and we'll be going out for lunch with DD (2yo) and other family. AIBU to keep him off school for the day or is this ok?

jesus the vitriol in some of these posts!

it seems to be that the op wouldnt be taking her ds out of school for her bday normally, but it just so happens that her bday falls after the wkend holiday (which they have HAD to rearrange for a family death) and therefore she just thought as it was the next day and her dh and other family members are going to be there, why not just keep him off for an extra day? seems reasonable enough to me........

but then i took ds1 in yr 6, ds2 in y3 and ds3 in reception out of school to go to a music festival (cornbury) it was great, they had a ball, the headteacher was fine about it (envious that she couldnt go) AND we took them out another time for WHOLE WEEK as dp's job means that he just cannot get school holidays off a lot of the time, and the only time we could go away as a family was during term time, we explained this to the school and again they were fine with it. other than ds3 who had time off had kawasakis disease their attendance has been really good and so the school were fine about it.

ds1 is now at high school (yr 8) he has missed a few days due to emergeancy op but otherwise no time at all, but if something important came up that i felt would benefit him then i would think about it and discuss it with the school, but the responsibility lies with me and dp HIS parents to decide if we think it is worth missing school for.

LadyBeagleEyes · 21/09/2011 21:48

I've never been to Twycross but Edinburgh Zoo are getting pandas soon.
Worth taking your kids off for that I think, it gets far too crowded in the holidays.
Shirley, I don't do fat threads though it does seem to be simmering nicely.
I have a very overweight GP and she's brilliant.
I'm on the other taking your child out of school thread, but I'm swimming against the tide there.Grin

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 21/09/2011 21:48

Ha, I said to dp, 'WOW did you show ds the ants?'

He looked totally blank.

I deduced neither of them had washed their handsHmm

AmazingBouncingFerret · 21/09/2011 21:51

We're going to the zoo, zoo, zoo.
How about you, you, you?
You can come too, too, too.
We're going to the zoo!

We should do it.
