It makes me cringe and also the word ''courting''

Any words that make you cringe?

I realised today that I also have a problem with the phrase "food for thought". Can't put my finger on why.

Because:
a) It's dull and unoriginal - but is usually said by someone who thinks (s)he's being profound, wise and 'thought-provoking';
b) It conjures images of soggy, bland spinach and lentil stews;
c) It's usually used horribly worthily;
d) It makes food and thought both seem very unappealing.

OriginalPoster · 28/08/2011 21:56

Latrine or pissoir?

marriedinwhite · 28/08/2011 21:56

Don't mind frock tbh - like to put a posh frock on from time to time. Can't stand kids, real leather (if it isn't real, it isn't leather), and "passed away".

sleepymare · 28/08/2011 21:57

Frock! My best friend spent the whole of my wedding day telling me how pretty my 'frock' was. Could have slapped her! Hate, hate, hate the word.
Also I can't stand the words 'butty', 'cig', 'mucky' and my all time least favourite word 'L* - rhymes with 'tube'. Eeeewww

Tchootnika · 28/08/2011 21:59

Latrine or pissoir?

Pissoir, deffo. (Piss where? Grin )

Original Poster - why the beef with 'haberdashery' - and other lovely lingerie words? I'm thinking you may have had a bad experience, then seeing David Walliams-type character.

RufusTFirefly · 28/08/2011 22:00

Loo or lavatory. If I feel like it, I sometimes call it the bog. Just not Toy-LURT.

PersonalJesus · 28/08/2011 22:04

I can live with the word frock.

I cannot bear 'fud' and 'fannypad'.

MonaLotte · 28/08/2011 23:37

I don't mind frock.

I hate nookie

Also nippy, as in "My new car is quite nippy!"

I really dislike pokey. Especially when referring to a house or room .

Tchootnika · 28/08/2011 23:40

How about 'natty'? As in 'natty strides/trews/breeks/kecks'?

piprabbit · 28/08/2011 23:48

I hate the word glam.
My mum uses it a lot, as in "you could look quite glam if you made a bit of effort" or "I thought this blouse would be glam for an evening out".

Bleurgh.

CheshireDing · 29/08/2011 01:48

I have no feelings either way for frock but hate:-

Handbag (aarr hate, hate,hate)
Blouse

SouthernFriedTofu · 29/08/2011 03:01

moreyear · 29/08/2011 06:38

So 'The thought of making loved moistened her panties gusset' is a no go scentence then :)
But I love the word frock.

moreyear · 29/08/2011 06:38

*love

Faffalina · 29/08/2011 09:35

PersonalJesus, what is a fannypad? Am I missing out on something?

catgirl1976 · 29/08/2011 09:44

Hubby
Kids / Kiddies
Cigs / Ciggys
Serviette
Toilet
Afters
Mucky
Doh-De (or any other word for dummy. but also hate dummies)
Nowt
Ain't

Pan · 29/08/2011 10:22

"kids" annoys me. Something so dismissive about it. It should always be 'children' IMO.

Pagwatch · 29/08/2011 10:26

I remember private eye doing a thing about some journalists who had a bet amongst themselves . They were given a phrase which they had to try and work into genuine articles.

Apparently the society column guy had a guest at an event called
Moi St Gusset

It made me laugh. No idea if it was true or not

AuntiePickleBottom · 29/08/2011 10:40

dislike any baby talk..like horsie, cuppie.

the word crimbo came from bo selecter

Mogmog · 29/08/2011 10:46

Kurrikurri you are so right about panties. I love frock though - great word and not used nearly enough!
The word that makes me feel physically sick is festive. Really makes me cringe.

marriedinwhite · 29/08/2011 12:09

Just remembered "nookie". And anything mispronounced: aks, pacifically (specifically), etc., etc., - why can't people, especially if they have two masters degrees, look at the sounds and say them in the correct order. ...And the other gems - "I ain't got none", "you was" and "she dunnit"

fit2drop · 29/08/2011 13:51

I have to bite my tongue when I hear anyone use more in a wrong way

"I am more better than that"
"My house is more cleaner than her house"
" He is more richer than her"

arghhhhhhhhhhh

or when people say

" I learnt her to do that"

or

" Will you learn me this "

or

"Can you borrow me a fiver "

" you leant a fiver off me"

Im seriously gurning now just thinking about it

weejimmykrankie · 29/08/2011 16:20

Madam I am in hysterics at your post. My work is also aviation related and I try to avoid saying "belly" too! You could try "underside of the fuselage" maybe?

I also hate telly and, even moreso, smelly. I also used to find references to George Melly a bit nausea-inducing.

Naughty and poorly. My children shall be bad and sick.

Sofa.

I like frock, in an ironic way, gown even moreso.

CalamityKate · 29/08/2011 17:51

Kiddies.

CalamityKate · 29/08/2011 17:52

Tasty.
