we don't have money worries, our house is worth a fair bit more[40k at least] more than we owe on it, i'm happy being a sahm, we have a happy marraige on the whole, healthy as far as we know, nice car, been one one holiday abroad this year and 5 weekends away in uk.
we have a largeish 3 bedroom house which more than meets our needs
we get to have days out and meals out fairly often

i am surrounded by wealthy people though, with huge houses and very good lifestyles [ie gardeners, cleaners, never do their own d.i.y etc]

i'm fed up of feeling poor all time.

I use the internet a lot. I have never encountered these fans of Thatcher.(Actually, I have seen a couple of MNers, post about how she was a great female role model, even if her politics were shite)

I also use RL a lot. Never met any fans of Thatcher there. Or not anyone who would admit it to my face, anyway.

I liked Lady Thatcher, was far too young to vote. My dad still harks back to the days. He grew up on a council estate and worked and studied and felt that that government was supportive of his aspirations. He has never been wealthy but we've been conservatives all our lives. Mumsnet is not a very open environment for political expression (unless you vote Labour and read the Guardian, of course). Anybody who admits to being a Tory gets a terrible time. But someone must do.
Anyway - I understand why the OP feels poor, envious and pissed off, but (as you are lucky enough to have your health) you can be master of your own destiny. Life's what you make it - it takes a lot of hard work and a bit of luck.

Nothing wrong with aspirations and hard work, but as you say there is an element of luck in where that takes you. There are so many factors like location, your particular employer, the economy at the time, job availability, family circumstances, educational opportunities, health and so on. Two people might make equal effort and end up with quite different results. (I'm not a Tory as you can probably tell!)
