to do the food shopping alone even though DH will be annoyed

OhdearNigel · 22/08/2011 12:17

My DH never, ever lets me go food shopping on my own. He always insists on coming, I suspect because he wants to fill the trolley up with biscuits and chicken kievs that he knows I won't buy !
We should have gone shopping last week, the cupboards and fridge are looking like mother hubbard's and the cats are having to eat tuna because there is no cat food. However, due to our shifts there is no opportunity for us to go food shopping this week as the only time we are both off is tomorrow evening when I will be putting DD (18m) to bed. He will be at work now until probably next week.
The only way I can get the food shopping done will be to have it delivered or go on my own - both of which will cause a row because of his odd obsession with coming shopping.
WWYD ? I have no milk, no sugar, no butter, no potatoes, no lots of things and really do need to go shopping before next Tuesday

This is really bizarre. Would he seriously rather you run out of milk and everyday foods for your child, sooner than 'let' you go to the supermarket on your own.

I don't get it. I can see that you have some disagreement over buying expensive ready-made foods, but isn't that a separate issue? Whether you go out and buy the essentials on your own, or you sit at home and don't buy anything, he still doesn't have the kievs, biscuits etc. So why can't you go?

What would happen if you just went out and bought some milk and whatever bits you need. How would he react?

VelvetSnow · 22/08/2011 12:56

I reckon OP and DH Gigantor are equally deranged.....

Get to the shops OP.

AnyFucker · 22/08/2011 12:57

I often wonder why that would be, don't you, teths ?

RavenVonChaos · 22/08/2011 12:58

make him go shopping for the next twenty years while you read a book/go to pub/lie in a scented bath. that'll teach him.

EricNorthmansMistressOfPotions · 22/08/2011 13:00

I just don't understand the attitude that he should have access to endless biscuits and ready meals because he wants them Confused Ok I grew up with the view that you make food from ingredients and you use what you have, but come on! They have a tight budget. OP, presumably, makes sure there are meals he enjoys and snacks he likes within their budget. It doesn't have to be one person's job to do that but if it's a shared responsibility, both parties need to be involved in meal planning and committed to a budget.

tethersend · 22/08/2011 13:01

Well exactly, AF.

My proposal is a win-win situation. By making cat Kievs:

  1. They get a tasty and nutritious home-made dinner
  2. Nobody needs to go to the shop
  3. The savings keep on saving; 5 fewer mouths to feed and a freezer full of goodness.
  4. Saves on tuna
  5. OP's DH gets his Kievs

So you see, everybody wins. Apart from maybe the cats.

VelvetSnow · 22/08/2011 13:02

JarethTheGoblinKing · 22/08/2011 13:03

Hang on.. he eats a tin of frozen condensed milk?

Am I missing something here?

Confused
tryingtoleave · 22/08/2011 13:03

They have five cats!? This thread just gets crazier!

AnyFucker · 22/08/2011 13:04

the cats are going to starve to death anyway (since OP is too cowed by her husband to perform that commonplace of tasks...go shopping) so it is a win-win even for them

the alternative of course, is that the cats start to eat her

that cannot be allowed to happen

hence...cat kiev

AnyFucker · 22/08/2011 13:05

most commonplace of tasks

JarethTheGoblinKing · 22/08/2011 13:05

I've got confused somewhere along the line and now am convinced it's the cats not letting the OP go and buy food, and it's them that's being controlling.

summertimeblews · 22/08/2011 13:05

for all we know, OP spends 95% of her budget on fancy cat food

and thats why hubby has to police her shopping habits

tryingtoleave · 22/08/2011 13:05

My dh says that thanks to this thread he now understands the riots.

switchtvoffdosomelessboring · 22/08/2011 13:06

£250 a month to feed two adults and one child? Not including all the veg and stuff that they grow? And that the OP makes bread and biscuits and all that. Surely there is enough to buy a few packs of bourbon creams (which are like 39p a pack) and a couple of cheap kievs?

However the Op's DH does sound like a twat. He controls the money? Really? You think thats an acceptable way to live?

summertimeblews · 22/08/2011 13:07

You think thats an acceptable way to live?

maybe she is a spendaholic always getting them in debt

we cant judge properly based on a couple of posts, we need the full gist before we can judge her and him and their marriage and their cats

ColdSancerre · 22/08/2011 13:08

I can't imagine cats actually taste nice. Have you smelt cat food? Nothing that eats something that smells so vile could ever be tasty.

AnyFucker · 22/08/2011 13:09

I judge the cats, no question about that

Salmotrutta · 22/08/2011 13:09

I admit it...I have ignored all subsequent posts as I homed right in on the fact that the DH snoops through his BILs post. Shock

Is he a fraud squad Police Officer?

I didn't know you could freeze condensed milk.

AnyFucker · 22/08/2011 13:09

them evil fuckers are going to eat her if she doesn't get the 1st strike in..

VelvetSnow · 22/08/2011 13:09

agree and am really laughing here with the cats theory

onemoreminute · 22/08/2011 13:10

Why do you have 5 cats when you can't buy a packet of biscuits ?

MalibuStac · 22/08/2011 13:10

Just read through. Op your very quiet now have you went to the shops?

Everyone likes treats why don't you just buy the cheap stuff. Surely its more time consuming for you to make biscuits or cakes if he'd rather eat shop bought?

Hope you went for your groceries, if I didn't shop dp would starve.

tryingtoleave · 22/08/2011 13:11

These cats have been eating proper tuna - never mind rafting with Kiev, just sear them lightly on both sides and they might taste like a quality tuna steak.
