to do the food shopping alone even though DH will be annoyed

My DH never, ever lets me go food shopping on my own. He always insists on coming, I suspect because he wants to fill the trolley up with biscuits and chicken kievs that he knows I won't buy !
We should have gone shopping last week, the cupboards and fridge are looking like mother hubbard's and the cats are having to eat tuna because there is no cat food. However, due to our shifts there is no opportunity for us to go food shopping this week as the only time we are both off is tomorrow evening when I will be putting DD (18m) to bed. He will be at work now until probably next week.
The only way I can get the food shopping done will be to have it delivered or go on my own - both of which will cause a row because of his odd obsession with coming shopping.
WWYD ? I have no milk, no sugar, no butter, no potatoes, no lots of things and really do need to go shopping before next Tuesday

Fuckin hell, op, your relationship sounds awful. What on earth are you doing with such a person? What sort of impact is this going to have on your dd? Sad

I'm still not getting the frozen condensed milk - if its frozen how can you eat it with a spoon? Am I the only one who didn't know that you can freeze things in a tin?

stripeywoollenhat · 22/08/2011 18:28

he doesn't really believe that what you put into your body affects how well it runs

and he's a detective...?

BadTasteFlump · 22/08/2011 18:35

Grin at izzy

All I can see now when I think of OP's H is the fat one in Hot Fuzz.

ChumleeIsMyHomeboy · 22/08/2011 18:47

See I'm wondering about freezing things in a tin. Wouldn't it expand and burst? How would you open the tin?

Salmotrutta · 22/08/2011 19:05

caughtinanet - no, you are not alone in your wondering.

Who knew that frozen condensed milk went gloopy eh? I certainly didn't.

And now izzy is going to test tinned tomatoes for us, in case anyone wants them for bloody marys.

Hmm - I doubt it would expand Chumley- metal usually only expands on heating. But your fingers would stick to the tin when you try to open it. Or your tongue if you tried to lick it.

caughtinanet · 22/08/2011 19:12

We need some volunteers to test freeze various different tinned items and report back. Do we think the already long shelf life could be extended by years ?

I'm at a loss to see how anyone could ever have discovered this delicacy in the first place.

LaWeasel · 22/08/2011 19:14

Cans of beer definately burst in the freezer (voice of bitter drunken experience)

Salmotrutta · 22/08/2011 19:36

Ah, yes forgot about beer!

squeakytoy · 22/08/2011 19:43

milk expands when frozen too.. (I remember when we had milk delivered in winter and it had frozen solid on the door step... and had pushed the foil top off the bottle)

FabbyChic · 22/08/2011 19:45

Seriously what does he expect you to do live on fuck all. Get a backbone and go and buy what you need for you, if he wants anything he can buy his fucking own.

fedupofnamechanging · 22/08/2011 20:04

Fabby, I love you - you are so calm and reasonable Grin

BustyStClaire · 22/08/2011 20:05

Get to the shop & grow a pair FFS!

Bunbaker · 23/08/2011 07:05

I am laughing away at this thread its so entertaining.

OhDearNigel
Why don't you shop online? A couple of people have asked already. It is so much easier to see how much you are spending, takes far less time (and when your OH goes out of the room satisfied that you have ordered his crap stuff you can delete them off the list) Smile

CognitiveDissident · 23/08/2011 16:35

Re freezing tinned stuff.

The food is under negative pressure in the can. As it's sealed in while at 85+degrees, this creates a partial vacuum upon cooling. Hence you can freeze tinned goods without the can deforming or bursting.

With carbonated drinks (cans of soda, bottles of beer) the reverse is true. The drink is under pressure to begin with, and cooling causes the dissolved carbon dioxide to come out of solution, further increasing the pressure.

BTW most materials shrink upon cooling(conservation of energy). Water(and by extension water-based foodstuffs) is anomalous, due to high amounts of hydrogen bonding, causing large, open, hexagonal, crystalline structures.

CognitiveDissident · 23/08/2011 16:37

Buggrit

meant to add that water expanded, but you can probably infer that from the post...
