Thistledew's Mon 15-Aug-11 13:03:24 post on, "but the answer is cauliflower" actually sums up what I have observed.
I only joined MN a few weeks ago so have no knowledge of the history or the internecine conflicts between different sections of the site or particular members. I've contributed primarily to the Feminism section, mainly because there is a dearth of sites on t'interwebs for this unless you are on Facebook (I'm not.) There is a broad range of opinions expressed, most folks seem to express those views with supporting evidence where possible (I have found the links very useful,) and tend to be frank, yet tactful and polite.
I don't expect to get patted on the head for just contributing as a newbie. On any discussion board, I think you have to lurk a bit to catch onto the groove and then dive in when you feel ready. I've been far more ignored and experience what looks like cliquey behaviour on other sites than here.
But, like most discussion boards, there do seem to be a few folks who insist the cauliflower equation applies (I like that analogy :) ) It becomes pretty clear after the subject has gone round and round and round for the umpteenth time that it's not that some members don't understand what others are saying. It's just that they disagree and instead of accepting that and moving on, continue to quite deliberately misread what others have said or selectively read to keep stoking the conflict. Perhaps they get their jollies from having lots of people hopping and bobbing around them in a merry textual dance.
In her first post after starting this thread, Jenny Vs World states with respect to the 300 or so contributions, "The results have largely been very entertaining."
I think that speaks volumes.
