I consider myself an active proponent of equality of opportunity and a stern critic of discrimination... and yet I find that I can't identify with many of the viewpoints I encounter on the MN feminism page (and often say so). AIBU?

The thing that dare not speak its name...

Sniggers like Muttley at dastardly

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 15/08/2011 16:12

I do hate turkeys. They're sinister fuckers. They hover in an agressive manner. Like feathery daleks.

Sit in the bucket, swallowed. And then put yourself in a cage for 48 hours. That should do it.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 15/08/2011 16:12

I can spell. Honest.

Ah well will give up on JVW enlightening me but thanks for the suggestions DCMFD - I did attempt to try and get a bit active on the Guardian's Comment is Free section and even The Daily Mail comments (did not involve leaving my armchair once apart from to get a cup of tea) but christ on a bike it's so depressing scrolling through comment after comment vilifying single mums (became a single mum in past year so still a bit of a sensitive flower over it although xDP is loving, involved, paying his way so no problems there) - it is quite impressive though the way that whatever the issue, whatever the problem, (recent riots being a case in point) twisted logic dictates that it can always be made to be women's fault.

I have been thinking a lot about how absent fathers (and all absent NRPs) can be made to step up to the plate financially at least. I mean, seriously, charging RPs to use the CSA - ffs. Assumably this was a bit of Steve Hilton's (wrong name I think - Cameron's blue sky advisor) "out of the box" thinking.

annonyetagain · 15/08/2011 16:14

thankyou for appologising Jenny-i dont think that it was youre intention for this to happen though either[pulling out peoples posts like this]

Cheers SAF!

OP; I'll never be 'feminist of the year' - I disagree with a lot of what feminists say - not just on here but everywhere (( I'm not selfish )) - but I can really understand how pissed off they must get being constantly targeted in this way - there's very few places on the Internet to discuss feminism ( sadly ) so they really should be left in peace to support each other and chat about whatever they damn well like - yes I think everyone is entitled to an opinion, but MN is not the be all and end all of life, and in 10 years time no one is going to be talking about 'that thread on Mumsnet' - (( in 10 minutes time for most of us )) - so why get so annoyed about them?
I agree that the section can at times be a little unwelcoming - but I'm starting to understand why - I'm passionate about unions and workers rights - if there was a section on here for that and people kept coming on saying 'bollocks to the unions you're all commie bastards' - I'd be be bloody defensive.

carminagoesprimal · 15/08/2011 16:21

And chicken keepers are targeted by animal rights activists -
Cages have to be a certain size - EU regulations.

I dont think there is ONE feminist postition. It has varied over the years with different people

InstantAtom · 15/08/2011 16:42

Thanks DontCallMeFrothyDragon :) I'll try again with the Feminism section sometime.

seeker · 15/08/2011 16:47

" I disagree with a lot of what feminists say"

Like what?

evenlessnarkypuffin · 15/08/2011 16:58

Nice chicken keepers give their chickens more room than regs require. And feed them porridge on cold days. Here.

evenlessnarkypuffin · 15/08/2011 17:03

And I am very pleased to have a Corona HerBeX. It sounds nicer than a hymen. I feel like I've upgraded.

NotQuiteSoDesperate · 15/08/2011 17:11

I've been lurking on the Feminism section for a while and only dare to post very rarely. That's mainly because, despite calling my self a feminist for decades, I don't feel I have enough knowledge to contribute. But I do enjoy reading many of the threads.

KRIKRI · 15/08/2011 17:11

Thistledew's Mon 15-Aug-11 13:03:24 post on, "but the answer is cauliflower" actually sums up what I have observed.

I only joined MN a few weeks ago so have no knowledge of the history or the internecine conflicts between different sections of the site or particular members. I've contributed primarily to the Feminism section, mainly because there is a dearth of sites on t'interwebs for this unless you are on Facebook (I'm not.) There is a broad range of opinions expressed, most folks seem to express those views with supporting evidence where possible (I have found the links very useful,) and tend to be frank, yet tactful and polite.

I don't expect to get patted on the head for just contributing as a newbie. On any discussion board, I think you have to lurk a bit to catch onto the groove and then dive in when you feel ready. I've been far more ignored and experience what looks like cliquey behaviour on other sites than here.

But, like most discussion boards, there do seem to be a few folks who insist the cauliflower equation applies (I like that analogy :) ) It becomes pretty clear after the subject has gone round and round and round for the umpteenth time that it's not that some members don't understand what others are saying. It's just that they disagree and instead of accepting that and moving on, continue to quite deliberately misread what others have said or selectively read to keep stoking the conflict. Perhaps they get their jollies from having lots of people hopping and bobbing around them in a merry textual dance.

In her first post after starting this thread, Jenny Vs World states with respect to the 300 or so contributions, "The results have largely been very entertaining."

I think that speaks volumes.

SiamoFottuti · 15/08/2011 17:11

We are all individuals, even "the feminists". Perhaps you can't engage with the topic because you insist on seeing a whole lot of disparate positions as one homogenous opinion? It rather suggests that you haven't appreciated the nuances involved.

BBQFrenzy · 15/08/2011 17:15

Spot on KriKri re your observation of what JVW considers entertainment.

HerBeX Nice to see you - i was just wondering to DCMFD if you had disappeared/namechanged due to a certain graphic artist's targeting of you on his FB page and glad to see you have not!

KRIKRI · 15/08/2011 17:18

Oh, and for what it's worth, I genuinely don't get the idea that "feminists are man-haters," whether as a general comment or from contributions I've seen in the Feminist Forum.

From my personal experience, the times I have witnessed the most anti-male comments and sweeping misandrist generalisations or revelations from women about things they have done to intentionally harm or deceive men, it's been in the company of women who would never describe themselves as feminists.

The feminists I know love human beings, want to see all humans achieve their potential. They realise that women, men and transgendered people are constricted by a system that places more value on what's in your pants than what's in your head. It seems some people have a problem with that idea. Hey ho.

carminagoesprimal · 15/08/2011 17:21

Tbh seeker -( now you've put me on the spot ) I can't think of any one thing -

carminagoesprimal · 15/08/2011 17:24

ELNP - lol at that website - can I post on it?

evenlessnarkypuffin · 15/08/2011 17:26

I assume so. It's not mine. It belongs to a chicken-loving (in a good way) MNer.

evenlessnarkypuffin · 15/08/2011 17:28

It is also saving my garden. I would have ducks rather than chickens. Many ducks...
