I consider myself an active proponent of equality of opportunity and a stern critic of discrimination... and yet I find that I can't identify with many of the viewpoints I encounter on the MN feminism page (and often say so). AIBU?

HandDivedScallopsrgreat

I mentioned one post from all the posts on that section.

You're in danger of seriously generalising.

AF...I may have worded my relpy wrong, I apologise.

ProfessionallyOffendedGoblin · 15/08/2011 13:20

'Why are people condoning jailtime for any kids that have underage sex?

For example two 15 year olds?'

I wasn't, not for either individual involved. Others disagreed quite firmly and insisted that the male should be jailed. Search the thread if you like, I'm not linking it again after last time.

it's ok, OG, I am teasing you Grin

another misconception innit, feminists are humourless

organicgardener · 15/08/2011 13:21

POG

If posters were suggesting that the Male should be jailed for rape they're obviously wrong.

LOL @ AF :)

LaBelleFrotheur · 15/08/2011 13:22

saf, agreed on both counts - neither roast dinners or Brad Pitt appeal. Now, a nice Thai meal and Johnny Depp on the other hand...

HandDivedScallopsrgreat · 15/08/2011 13:22

Really not following you OG. You are the one citing one post as an example of the feminist section not me.

AnyFucker · 15/08/2011 13:23

I think I may have made a new MN mate today Grin

This thread has had some use, after all

Something good can come out of something crap

< eulogises like a feckwit some more >

organicgardener · 15/08/2011 13:24

I never generalised or slighted the FEM section HDS.

But I did state that there are a few odd views (Possibly radical) in there.

Maybe you missed that?

TheRealTillyMinto · 15/08/2011 13:24

Maryz i think that is an interesting question - should the older one be charged, or should they both be charged?

i find it sexist that the boy is criminalised and the girl is victimised.

organicgardener · 15/08/2011 13:25

(Have concluded that Feminist HAVE indeed got a sense of humour) Grin

ProfessionallyOffendedGoblin · 15/08/2011 13:26

So, OP.
YANBU to disagree with anyone on MN.
Including posters on the feminist board. HTH.

LaBelleFrotheur · 15/08/2011 13:26

The point about underage girls, also, would suggest that sex is still seen as something girls/women have done to them rather than being something that both parties should be equally contributing/receiving (badly worded but hopefully makes sense).

Claw3 · 15/08/2011 13:27

Can i just ask, slightly off topic as the thread has moved on now, what makes a feminist, a feminist?

Surely all women believe in equal rights, but not all women call themselves feminists?

LaBelleFrotheur · 15/08/2011 13:28

I mean where both parties are consenting (within the definition of agreeing not necessarily the legal definition of the ability to consent).

LaBelleFrotheur · 15/08/2011 13:30

Claw, that is a really good question that I can't answer. Maybe it's the frothing?

AnyFucker · 15/08/2011 13:30

OG, most do

some do not

like every other loose "group" of people

ThePosieParker · 15/08/2011 13:30

SAf....Frothing? You are a very offensive/defensive poster whom I actively avoid. You, like others, seem to think 'what about the menz' is a cool short hand for I'm a real feminist just look at my irony. What about men? is pertinent to feminism because we want our men, fathers, sons, brothers, friends and so on to be part of a fairer society. Individual men are not the enemy, patriarchy may be, but not every man out there. And the day I excuse prejudice of any gender based upon experience when time and time again others, ie men, are not afforded the same prejudice is the day I truly give up the fight.

Feminism is not a women's movement, it is not a movement that only positively affects women either. It's something wonderful for everyone, sometimes the feminist section of MN can display some views by individuals that are wholly bad for feminism. But it is only some posters.

CaptainNancy · 15/08/2011 13:33

milkmilklemonade - I have to laugh at someone who claims "it's sixth form stuff in the main" ... when that someone is named after a primary school chant! Grin

AnyFucker · 15/08/2011 13:36

< imagines jenz sat at home in her trollies, marking "job done" on her list of things to do today >

Item no. 1 set the feminists arguing against each other

CaptainNancy · 15/08/2011 13:36

claw3 I'm not sure all women do believe in equal rights actually (and why should they? everyone is entitled to their own opinion/beliefs).
