PippiLongBottom · 14/08/2011 09:04

Me: Mainly English but my grandad (now dead) used to describe his father as a 'one armed Jewish auctioneer'. They came here from Poland, I believe, (they are difficult to trace) and lived in Golders Green.

DH: Can trace many, many generations back to Derbyshire where his parents still live. His unusual surname which sounds foreign is actually old english and means 'Little people that dwell in trees'.

Born in Dublin's fair city. Dad an Aussie, mum a Roscommon girl. Their eyes locked over the dance floor at the Hammersmith Palais circa 1965 - and the rest is history.
We moved to Sydney when I was a couple of months old and that's where I grew up and live.
Hubby is a pom (I swear I mean that as a term of endearment). He grew up in Reading but is an Aussie citizen now. My girls are so fair - white skin, blue eyes. Must keep them out of this bloody sun!! (not so much today)

Pin0t · 14/08/2011 09:48

I'm 1/4 Scottish, 1/8 Irish and 1/16 French. The rest English.
DH is 100% English.

ben5 · 14/08/2011 09:53

Ds1 was born in Glasgow

We moved to Australia in June 09. Best thing we have ever done!

LittleWhiteWolf · 14/08/2011 09:53

Certainly the last few generations of both mine and DHs family are English, but I'd describe us as British. My maiden name was Irish and we have family that go waaaaay back there before coming to England. My married name is Scottish, but DHs family mostly come from the midlands. I also have relatives on my mums side that originally come from Wales. DH and I both born in England.

I always tick White British anyway.

extremepie · 14/08/2011 09:55

On my Mom's side - my great great grand parents were Swedish,
great grandparents, Canadian,
grandparents and mother Zimbabwean,
I was born in South Africa.

On my Dad's side pretty much all Scottish and I now live in England.

So I'm some part Swedish, Canadian, Zimbabwean, South African and Scottish.

DH is a mix of English and Welsh but does have some Norwegian (Viking!) blood in him too, which is probably why he's blond, beefy and 6"4!

TheFlyingOnion · 14/08/2011 09:59

I'm 3/4 British and 1/4 Polish

DP is German

bellaisgoingtoHawaii · 14/08/2011 10:01

Born and bred in Yorkshire same as DH.

QOD · 14/08/2011 10:03

Kentish born and bred, mum is half Manchunian and half Kentish, Dad Kentish thru and thru

slightlymad72 · 14/08/2011 10:05

My Maternal Grandfather was born in a french colony in Oran to Spanish and Italian parents. My Maternal Grandmother had Jewish, German and English ancestors.
My Paternal Grandmother was English, but had a lot of cousins marrying each other, my family tree shows her to be my cousin (god knows how many times removed) as well as my Grandmother. My Paternal Grandfather was a mix of Irish and English.
My children are an even bigger mix as their father has Welsh and Scottish Grandparents.
DH, Me and DCs where all born in England though.

firstforthought · 14/08/2011 10:07

Dad Scottish/ Mum Irish. I was born in England.
DH Egyptian.
DD born in Egypt.
DS born in England.

Pawsnclaws · 14/08/2011 10:14

Wow, you lot are exotic! I'm English/Welsh, DH is English/Irish.

My gran was Welsh and had very dark/olive skin, as does my mum - people often ask if she's Greek or Italian - she's never needed suncream (wish I could say the same). What's that about then?

feedthegoat · 14/08/2011 10:16

Both myself and DH are english for as many generations as we know about. I believe both families have been in Yorkshire for a good few generations too.

The closest I can claim to anything exciting is that my paternal grandfather was a traveller. His parents had a horse drawn caravan so I guess that side of the family could be anyones guess!

TanteAC · 14/08/2011 10:21

I'm Irish, DH is English - we live in England. Bit boring, really, sorry!
But amused at just how many Irish people are on mn...I have always maintained that they lie about the population of Ireland, and it is actually 20 billion

Yellowstone · 14/08/2011 10:22

Paws it's about the Welsh coming from Spain and France early on, not Italy or Greece.

Florabeebaby · 14/08/2011 10:23

I'm Finnish, DH Algerian...live in England.
I have Swedish heritage in my family.

Gonzo33 · 14/08/2011 10:26

Half English, Half Sicilian/French.

Consider myself European because I wouldn't know how else to describe our family.

Pawsnclaws · 14/08/2011 10:28

Thanks yellowstone.

DirtyBit · 14/08/2011 10:39

rockinhippy · 14/08/2011 10:40

worraliberty · 14/08/2011 10:45

Born in England...Irish parents

DH born in England...Spanish Mum, Scottish Dad, American Step Dad

mamofK · 14/08/2011 11:09

Horribly boring ancestery - I'm Irish, both parents grew up less than a mile from each other, and both extended families have been in the same spot in the Southwest since Normans came (oooh, maybe I'm a bit French after all?) Same situation with DH, he's just from the next county over, how unexotic is that? Blush

Sewmuchtodo · 14/08/2011 11:17

Born in Scotland to Scottish Parents (Irish descent). Live in England, South West with Scottish husband, 2 Scottish kids (although accents are fading fast) and a new English one on the way!
