An establishment like 'Hooters' is pathetic and wrong?

OP posts:
squeakytoy · 06/08/2011 11:17

I do think that the customers of Hooters are lacking in respect for the wiatresses as effectively they are paying to use these women for their own sexual kicks

Righto then.. Hmm

Its a fast food restaurant, not a strip bar.

SiamoFottuti · 06/08/2011 11:17

Some really ridiculous posts on here. I've never been to a BNP meeting, am I not allowed to object to that either?

It's not about looking down on women who choose to work there, its about the fact that we are so backwards as a society to have them at all. Women parading around in tight tops and skimpy shorts, with wet-t-shirt competitions? Its just pathetic. What does that say about us all?

EssentialFattyAcid · 06/08/2011 11:18

Grin at BimboNo5!!!
Takes one to know one ;)

EssentialFattyAcid · 06/08/2011 11:19

Its not a fast food restaurant, its a letching arena masquerading as a restaurant

squeakytoy · 06/08/2011 11:19

"normalised, objectified, sexualised"

I thought Mary Whitehouse had popped her clogs years ago.

SquidgyBiscuits · 06/08/2011 11:21

BimboNo5 - I would say Hooters was an exceptionally good business idea, given that they have 455 branches.

Some people are very attractive, some people have amazing bodies. If those people want to use those natural assets to earn a living, then fine. Not everybody is academic, not everybody wants to earn a living in perhaps the same way as you may.

And looking good is very valuable in life. You may not like that, but it is very true. People generally want to look good, that's of the reason that we wear make up, buy nice clothes, have our hair done etc. As much as people say it is for them, it isn't.

SiamoFottuti · 06/08/2011 11:21

Whats Mary Whitehouse got to do with anything? Hmm

What exactly is it about a beer and a burger that requires a woman with large breasts and little clothing to serve it? Do you want to see Ronald in a mankini if you bring the kids to McDonalds?

PeterSpanswick · 06/08/2011 11:24

I once threatened to get a weekend job there after hearing my brother discuss with his friends the waitresses they had been served by in a rather disturbing (to me, anyway!) manner. Was quite amusing when he couldn't articulate why I shouldn't seeing as the women they had mentioned were so empowered and happy in their job.

I accept the rights of women to choose to work for Hooters or for that matter in other sexually exploitative industries if it is genuinely their own free choice to do so.

I am however completely horrified by women who choose to take their children there, so much so that if I met someone in RL who did this I couldn't possibly let it go without voicing my horror tbh.

SquidgyBiscuits · 06/08/2011 11:35

EssentialFattyAcid why? Have your children never seen women in tight clothes before? I took my niece to a beach themed restaurant a while ago. The women wore either vest tops and tight shorts or bikinis with grass skirt and hula. The men wore beach shorts and a vest top. They all had the choice of what to wear. It was fun. But our primary objective was food. We were hungry, it was close by and the menu looked good. The vast majority of people I know couldn't give a shiny shite what their waiter or waitress wears, as long as they provide good service.

giyadas · 06/08/2011 11:36

yay, another chance to link to Grin

ledkr · 06/08/2011 11:43

I wonder if you can breast feed in hooters? Just asking Grin

JeelyPiece · 06/08/2011 11:44

SquidgyBiscuits a beach-themed restaurant, that's nice. However Hooters is a breast-themed restaurant for men's sexual gratification. Do you honestly not see the difference?

BimboNo5 · 06/08/2011 11:45

I just lol'ed at Ronald McDonald in a mankini!

OP posts:
SiamoFottuti · 06/08/2011 11:46

What they wear is not incidental, its the entire point. Do you think people go there just for the food? Don't be ridiculous!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 06/08/2011 11:47

Bimbo... You started a thread to ask 'AIBU'? in AIBU so it stands to reason that you'll get a variety of responses. You know that very well. You haven't been to this place so you obviously just want to rant about it. If you want to rant with nobody telling you that they disagree, there's a better place for your rant... you know that well also.

I personally wouldn't frequent Hooters, I think the concept is tacky, but other people have the right to do what is legal and they should be free to go about their business without people like you telling them that they're 'porn apologists' or whatever other moronic name you choose to call them. You sound a bit pathetic really, like one of those friendless drunks in the pub, still able to stagger to the bar, spinning around spilling their drink everywhere and challenging customers to a fight. Again, your choice.

SquidgyBiscuits · 06/08/2011 11:49

JeelyPiece no. Both are restaurants. Both are staffed by people in skimpy outfits. If Hooters existed just for mens' sexual gratification, I should think they'd probably do away with the pesky food, selling of merchandise to women, catering for hen do's etc.

As an aside, why do people assume that only men like to look at boobs? I do too. And once on a train, I noticed a guy sat in my line of sight with snug trousers on and a huge packet. I couldn't take my eyes off it. It was MASSIVE. I notice attractive people all the time, and I appreciate attractiveness. People check out other people all the time. I just don't really understand how someone can be offended by a pretty girl in tight clothes.

The eye police will probably be along to cart me off anytime now.

SiamoFottuti · 06/08/2011 11:50

Way to miss an entire point.

BimboNo5 · 06/08/2011 11:50

Urrr Lying can you poinbt out where ive said I dont want anyone to disagree with me? Talk about some people seeing what they want and running with it!

Squeaky is a porn apologist though, as she admitted to in several threads. Its not just a random insult flung at a random person. And as for comparing me to a pathetic friendless drunk, well yet another prime example of 'she flung an insult so I will too...'
I will be logging off in a bit anyway (not 'running off') as im going away with 6 female friends for a spa weekend. Pretty good going for a friendless drunk im sure you will agree.

OP posts:
LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 06/08/2011 11:52

No, you've proved my point Bimbo. If they agree with you, you can't call them 'porn apologists', as you did Squeakytoy, can you?

Would you like another beer?

BimboNo5 · 06/08/2011 11:54

Im not offended by pretty girls in tight clothes. People can and do go out wearing what they want. A chain of restaurants where only female slim pretty women MUST wear tight skimpy clothing and be pretty is a totally different kettle of fish and only total nincompoops cannot see the glaringly obvious difference.

OP posts:
LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 06/08/2011 11:55

You're not unreasonable to think that 'Hooters' is 'pathetic and wrong', I might agree with you, but I hate the name calling, that's even more pathetic and wrong and if that's what you started the thread for then at least own up to it.
