An establishment like 'Hooters' is pathetic and wrong?

I really detest the notion that I should carry the weight of the entire female population on my shoulders every time I choose to do something.

I don't differentiate between men and women in any sense other than a physical one. I don't have a victim complex, I don't achieve things, or fail to achieve them, because of my gender. I work incredibly hard and am rewarded for the hard work I put in as a person, not as a woman.

True equality on any differential basis, be it racial, gender, sexuality, is surely about the freedom to act as you wish to without being subject to criticism or judgement for it???

squeakytoy · 06/08/2011 10:44

Cheerleaders are not much different though. They wear tight tops, short skirts and jump around a lot..

TheMonster · 06/08/2011 10:45

I went to a Hooters in the States once with my mum. The service was brilliant.

I've always wondered how they manage their recruitment - it would be interesting to see their criteria.

I think conventionally attractive women should stop applying for jobs there, y'know, just to see what happens.

BimboNo5 · 06/08/2011 10:51

Nobody said women cant make their own choices did they Altinkum? Cheerleaders are also a ridiculous american concept but thats a totally different debate. What I am discussing here is a perfectly valid debate about a restaurant thats image is all about women in skimpy clothing serving them. I have not once stated women should not be able to choose to do so if they wish unless someone wishes to enlighten me?

OP posts:
squeakytoy · 06/08/2011 10:53

It isnt a totally different debate at all Bimbo, because the ethos of Hooters was based on cheerleaders and their attire.

BimboNo5 · 06/08/2011 10:57

Hooters is a business, where they employ workers. Female workers to serve customers. If you really cannot grasp the difference Squeaky you need to go into a corner and have a good word with yourself!

"It always amazes me as well tbh, how many women seem to have no qualms about other women being objectified and sexualised for the menfolks gratification all the time and have such apathy about it. It worries me such people may be raising the next generation of women."

Erm, unless I've misread, this would be you judging, BimboNo5

EssentialFattyAcid · 06/08/2011 11:02

Do you have to have big boobs to work in Hooters and, if so are Hooters allowed to recruit using boob size as a legitimate selection criteria?

TiggyD · 06/08/2011 11:03

And American cheerleaders can go on to become the President.

BimboNo5 · 06/08/2011 11:05

Of course its judging to a degree, that happens with all issues people dont agree with does it not? But where have I said women DONT ir shouldnt have that choice? It does concern me the general apathy to sexualising women/girls and having them as pretty little decorations to brighten up mens day in general. Its something I do object to but I have never once stated people shouldnt have that choice to do so if they wish.

squeakytoy · 06/08/2011 11:05

I am quite capable of "grasping the difference" Bimbo Hmm. I am also capable of realising that a company which employs over 25,000 employees is keeping a lot of people with a roof over their heads, and I would certainly not look down on someone if they worked there, nor would I look down on the patrons who pay money to keep them in those jobs.

I have been to Hooters many times. I am not offended by a woman in a short skirt or a tight top, so long as she is polite and gets my order correct, which so far, all the staff who have served me have done.

I try not to judge people for earning a living, because it is their choice how they earn that money, and it is a damn sight better than starving, or being a drain on society.

Many of the women who work in Hooters are doing so to pay for their college fees. Good luck to them.

Whatmeworry · 06/08/2011 11:06

This day and age is more liberal than some previous ones, the result is some people like to do things others despise. I prefer it that way overall.

And if I were the campaigning type it'd be the strip joints and clip joints I'd be going after long before Hooters.

EssentialFattyAcid · 06/08/2011 11:09

I think it highly unlikely from anything BimboNo5 has said that she "looks down on" any women who decide to work for Hooters. I don't think anyone on this thread has said that they feel that way, the discussion is not about this, surely?

I dont look down on anyone except the dimwit who thought of this 'wonderful business idea'. Its just yet another way to gradually normalise the concept women need to be there to leer at, looking good is your worth in life and give guys more false idea about what women should ideally look like in their ideal little bubbles. Young girls should aspire to enter young miss hooters contests and anyone who objects to this is a prude or themselves ugly.

squeakytoy · 06/08/2011 11:14

Very much a family place in the daytime, especially in areas that have a lot of tourists.

EssentialFattyAcid · 06/08/2011 11:15

I do think that the customers of Hooters are lacking in respect for the wiatresses as effectively they are paying to use these women for their own sexual kicks.

BimboNo5 · 06/08/2011 11:16

Exactly EFA. You prudish ugly lesbian ;)

In the case of kids taken to the restaurants they are indeed being normalised into thinking that it is OK for men to be disrespectful to women.
