An establishment like 'Hooters' is pathetic and wrong?

Hey now, I loved being a cheerleader in high school! :) But we wore long-sleeved bodysuits under our skimpy tops. The skirts were quite short though...

extremepie · 07/08/2011 06:14
  • one could say the same for anything. hmm Does anything go in your world, and if people don't like it they should just avoid it? -

Not quite but I don't see the point in complaining about it, they aren't going to close Hooters just because you don't like it! If you don't like a food, you don't eat it, if you don't like a movie, you don't watch it, I'm just saying that it makes sense to me that if you really disagree with the premise of Hooters that much, vote with your feet and don't spend any money there! Simple!

No, I don't have any daughters (yet), I have 2 sons, and I personally wouldn't care if they chose to go somewhere like Hooters. If I did have any daughters I really wouldn't mind if they wanted to work somewhere like that either! It probably wouldn't be my restaurant of choice mainly just because I hate watching sport and wouldn't care to have in on in the background while I'm eating but I really don't see the problem with the concept. I don't think not having daughters disqualifies me from being able to have an opinion.

The girls do a job and get paid (probably better than most waitresses in restaurants) and they probably also get good tips, which I know can make a big difference having worked as a waitress myself.

The thing is, men ogle women wherever you go. Having worked as a barmaid that is one place in particular where blokes are very likely to eye women up but no one is calling for a blanket ban on pubs or alcohol! Hooters is just a bit more obvious about the fact that they prefer to employ slim, attractive girls for their staff but in reality most places with customer facing roles do, they are just more subtle about it!

SiamoFottuti · 07/08/2011 11:16

I don't need to, we don't have them in my more civilised country.

As long as they get good tips, I'm sure its just fine that they are only valued for the size of their breasts. Dandy.

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 11:29

Its 2011. Places should not employ people to wear skimpy clothing so menfolk are 'happy'. Its just pathetic and reinforces the view its okay for men to be chauvinstic pigs. An actual business that encourages men to be chauvinistic pigs in this day and age is disgraceful. So I reserve to right to voice this view rather than 'just not go there'

I think you''ll find that if a girl working there was a terrible server, rude to customers, didn't do her job well, etc she would not continue to work there even if she was gorgeous and had massive boobs, so I don't think they are only valued according to their breast size.

I think you'll also find that there are no rules within Hooters about minimum size in order to be employed, there are also very strict rules about customers behaviour towards the waitresses and if anyone is inappropriate or disrespectful the are asked to leave/removed.

I'd like to see you inforce that on the street! I'm not saying its ok for men to be chauvinistic pigs, but I also don't believe that a woman who wears a tight top is automatically going to be mistreated by men or treated like a sex object.

Because of course its impossible for blokes to treat a woman with respect AND appreciate her looks isn't it, they're all just a bunch of lecherous arseholes!

This is nuts - all you need to do to see boobs straining at the leash is take a walk on any high street, shopping centre etc etc. Are all those women kowtowing to male chauvinism too?

Also, following your line of thinking anyone who made money from displaying breasts should be panned - clothing manufacturers, newspapers, advertisers, dancersize classes etc etc. Why one restaurant chain?

You are basically saying "my intolerance is Good Intolerance because my beliefs are right". What if everyone who had that point of view was allowed to go for it? I would rather hope that it's 2011 so we should rather let folk get on with what they like to do so long as no one else gets hurt.

catgirl1976 · 07/08/2011 11:58

Well said what

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 12:08

Great so lets open chains of restaurants where only white people can work, businesses that refuse to allow anyone in a wheelchair a job as they dont look appealing to their shallow customers...seems discrimination is permitted if it is sexism

OP posts:
catgirl1976 · 07/08/2011 12:11

? but as has alreadyt been pointed out to you bimbo, 32% of the Hooters workforce is male. So that doesn't really stand up does it? And there are similar restaurants where only "hot" men are the waiters.

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 12:14

The men are not front of house staff! So a bit like saying oh well its fine, we let the disabled people work out the back where they wont put people off their rack of ribs

OP posts:
catgirl1976 · 07/08/2011 12:17

Erm - yes they are. They are busboys, hosts, managers and bar staff. Yes. Front. Of. House.

Bulmers · 07/08/2011 12:23

I didn't think that Hooters in the UK would work too well.
I've been plenty of times in both the US and Canada and think it's fine - it's a family restaurant.
I've found that the staff are equally as pleasant to me as they are to DH. Are they nice in the UK branch/es too?

and yes, as others have said, the ladies who work there choose to do so, ad earn a decent wage for it too.

catgirl1976 · 07/08/2011 12:25

I have never been in a Hooters and am not even sure we have them in the UK, so I couldn't say Bulmers. :)

catgirl1976 · 07/08/2011 12:25

oh - googled it - there are 2 in the UK. Cardif and Bristol so someone from there might be able to comment.

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 12:27

There is one in Nottingham

SiamoFottuti · 07/08/2011 12:28

Not the point, which you spectacularly fail to see, all of you.

Ladies choose to work in brothels too, you want to eat your dinner in there? Hmm

worraliberty · 07/08/2011 12:30

Who says they just keep the 'men folk' happy?

Hooters have female customers too.

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 12:31

Yes yes im sure the women really appreciate the skimpy outfits and tan in a can look Hmm

OP posts:
catgirl1976 · 07/08/2011 12:32

So...women can't find other women attractive Bimbo? Women can't appreciate another woman in a skimpy outfit or find that sexually attractive? Oh dear.

catgirl1976 · 07/08/2011 12:34

No Siamo - but no one is making me eat my dinner in a brothel OR in Hooters. If anyone tried to make me do either I would agree there was a a problem, but since they are not Hooters has NO EFFECT on my life (or yours) so am not sure why you care.

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 12:34

Poverty in Africa has no affect on my life- does that mean I shouldn't care! Ignoramous!

OP posts:
SiamoFottuti · 07/08/2011 12:35

you can find anyone you want attractive. However when you are paying for it (which you are here, its just a lesser form of prostitution in effect), thats when you get into a whole different ballgame.

Making money out of the objectification of women, thats the point.

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 12:36

Of course they can Catgirl but the primary aim is to indulge mens sexist and puerile fantasy image of women lets make no bones about it

OP posts:
SiamoFottuti · 07/08/2011 12:36

and the norms accepted in our society has an affect on us all, rather obviously. I'd prefer my society not to use womens bodies to make money.
