An establishment like 'Hooters' is pathetic and wrong?

No squeakytoy you are not. Only Bimbo is allowed to do that. Do try to keep up won't you.

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 20:55

Ahh now I get the reason for the prickliness- your DH likes to ogle scantily clad women under the guise of getting some food...im sorry Squeaky maybe you ought to go to counselling for that?

squeakytoy · 07/08/2011 20:57

No, my husband was more than able to keep himself under control in Hooters. He was watching the soccer game. You must have heard the saying about having steak at home. Wink.

Not that I would be considering those women pieces of meat, (like you do).

BrawToken · 07/08/2011 21:25

Oh FOR FUCK'S SAKE.

IT IS NOT NICE THAT YOUNG WOMEN WITH THEIR WHOLE LIVES AHEAD OF THEM TO HAVE TO PARADE AROUND SEMI NAKED TO EARN A LIVING.

Why is this hard to understand for some people?

BrawToken · 07/08/2011 21:27

HAVE TO Blush

PeterSpanswick · 07/08/2011 21:35

I often wear fake tan and skimpy clothes and probably don't fit anyone's idea of what a feminist "should" look like but nobody is making money out of me showing off my body, it is not a term of my employment and thus livelihood and therefore it is an actual choice and I am not being exploited by anyone.

I don't think Hooters should be banned and I support anybody's right to work there but I certainly don't agree with it and really think people should educate themselves about how damaging a concept like this is to society's view of women.

I think the girls who work there might have a false idea of their worth to seek out this kind of "status" and gauge their value by their attractiveness to men. Sorry but it's not a uniform I would be proud to wear.

squeakytoy · 07/08/2011 21:39

Braw,

THEY DONT HAVE TO THEY CHOOSE TO BECAUSE THAT IS THEIR RIGHT

If we are all going to shout.

But they do so, because they know they can, because it earns them bloody good money, because they are usually flirty types who can give as much banter back as they take, and they enjoy the job.

As has been said many times, a big proportion of the waitresses are doing this work while they pay their own way through college, rather than getting into a shedload of debt.

I would rather my daughters work in Hooters than a lapdancing club.

Whatmeworry · 07/08/2011 21:58

Hardly semi naked - compared to what girls wear on a beach or nightclub its positively demure.

Besides, why isn't it nice? Who says it isn't nice? Who has the goddamn right to tell any woman what they should or shouldn't wear? Is this just the "dress sensibly" argument wrapped up in another way, with intolerant women replacing chauvinist men?

BrawToken · 07/08/2011 22:35

Really? I'm not comparing these girls to those on a beach or in a night club. My issue is that this is a place of work.

As I said upthread, I have done this myself to earn a living and I do not wish this for my daughters. I want them to be listened to, taken seriously.

ChumleeIsMyHomeboy · 07/08/2011 22:37

Good thought provoking post worry - you are absolutely right about what girls wear to clubs etc! They are, of course, perfectly entitled to wear whatever they wish as well but one wonders if they too will incur the displeasure of the finger waggers?

worraliberty · 07/08/2011 22:37

Have your daughters applied to work for Hooters then? Confused

I'm sure that just like you, they have their own mind and will do as they see fit when it comes to earning their wages.

squeakytoy · 07/08/2011 22:43

But supposing your daughters WANT to go and work in Hooters. Would you stop them?

When your daughters are working their way through college or university, would you rather they get a job in a pub and deal with leering drunks.. who will give you verbal no matter what you are wearing?

Very few people who work in Hooters do it as a career. They do it as a fun way to earn money and a means to an end. There are a hell of a lot sleazier ways to earn money.

ChumleeIsMyHomeboy · 07/08/2011 22:44

Exactly worraliberty. Isn't this what the fight was all about? The freedom of women to do as they please without pressure to conform to someone else's perceived norms?

BrawToken · 07/08/2011 22:45

Haha worra Aye, mibbe they will work in Hooters, of course I'd prefer it if they were valued in other ways. I hope to fuck they don't. My eldest is a teen, so fingers crossed.

BrawToken · 07/08/2011 22:46

I worked in bars throughout uni myself. As a single parent. Being groped by men. Want a fight? Grin

worraliberty · 07/08/2011 22:53

Indeed it is Chumlee or at least one would hope....

Braw I worked in a bar too for years and I can honestly say I wasn't groped once. Perhaps my death stare scared them off Grin

BrawToken · 07/08/2011 23:03

Really? Not once worra? Some places were worse than others, but it was quite a common occurence for me. Especially as a waitress. Bars were better. I worked in catering/hospitality from 15-25 when I graduated and got a different type of job. The worst stuff happened when I was between 16 and 20, then I learned a killer stare myself.

worraliberty · 07/08/2011 23:09

Nope not once!

I've been groped on a night out with my mates though and also on a bus...but not when working in the bar.

It was a rough area too. I don't know whether to be insulted or not Shock Grin

BimboNo5 · 08/08/2011 06:08

Oh ffs...when are people going to get it through their head this debate isnt about what women wear and look like, its the concept of a 'restaurant' thats whole ethos is about sexism towards women but it seems like certain people just do not want to grasp this issue in an attempt to make others look totally unreasonable and put words they have never said into their mouths.

OP posts:
extremepie · 08/08/2011 09:03

I have to say that whatever point you seemed to be trying to make has been lost in the midst of all the random generalized insults you've been throwing around.

I think it's pretty sexist to call men 'pervs' or 'knuckle-dragging morons', and assuming that any man who sees a woman wearing tight clothing or looking attractive is obviously going to shout abuse at them or try to grope them.

You know, because that's what all men do all the time don't they?

As it has been pointed out earlier in the thread, some people of the male persuasion ARE actually capable of realizing what is a harmless, funny comment and what is abusive, and the situations where that sort of behaviour is appropriate.

Also, someone else commented that Hooters is just harmless fun, which of course you believe it is not.

What about Butlers in the Buff? They wear considerably less than a Hooters waitress and, again, pretty much the only reason they are there is to be ogled at and/or groped by women. Is that ok because it's men who are being 'mistreated'?

extremepie · 08/08/2011 09:03

I'm sure most people would say that is just harmless fun

extremepie · 08/08/2011 09:15

I also find the implication that anyone who works in a place like Hooters (ie, a bar or a restaurant - I have worked in both), is basically the same as a prostitute hugely insulting.

THEY ARE NOT THE SAME THING!!

EssentialFattyAcid · 08/08/2011 09:35

extremepie perhaps most people in your aquaintance do indeed consider Hooters to be "harmless fun"

This is however quite the reverse in my social circles.

Nobody on this thread has said that women should not be able to work in Hooters if they choose or that it is the same as being a prosititute. This is something you have created yourself by not reading the thread properly. You have further imagined an implication that all staff who have worked in restaurants or bars are the same as prosititutes??? What are you on?

Whatmeworry · 08/08/2011 09:43

Is this actually all about boob envy?
