I went into toysrus yesterday and purchased an elonex etouch tablet pc. for DS1 and DS2 to use.

I set it up when I got home and found it to have a history which contained porn sites - therefore it was preowned.

I returned to the store and got a replacement.

I set it up and again have found not only a web page history of porn sites but downloads a well.

They are telling me they didn't know these had been returned as there is no record of them being which leads me to the conclusion that a staff member is using them.

So please if you buy this item please do check the history first!!!

I am doing an interview tomorrow with a local paper.

Lady, its disgusting. I also found an 8yr old girl have found porn on a display laptop last year i think it was.

Shock i have thought about getting dd and ds son one of them for xmas, will maybe get them checked in store!

I hink you have totally done the right thing going public!

TheLadyEvenstar · 30/07/2011 12:32

Claimed, that would be advisable. My sister is getting her 2 DS's one and I have told her to check them instore.

We bought a brand new phone but the shop said the number came up as having been assigned to somebody else - they do reuse them.

TheLadyEvenstar · 30/07/2011 12:55

Vivid, I am aware that numbers get reused. My mum got a phone years back and when she went to register it it was already registered.

Now the odd thing is it had been previously registered to my dads brothers wife (i refuse to call her aunt) who has the same name as my mum both first and last. The only difference is their DOB and the area they live in.

OP posts:
vividgingerchilli · 30/07/2011 14:05

thelady - it's a pain as we couldn't upgrade the phone because it wasn't registered to us!

PaperView · 30/07/2011 14:15

Bloody hell you don't half make a mountain out of a molehill!

What was wrong with deleting the history and contacting TRU?

And why on earth would you go straight to the history anyway?

caughtinanet · 30/07/2011 15:26

Paperview - why would you just delete the history? Whether its porn or gardening websites if you buy a new item you expect that it hasn't been used. I don't know the item or whether it can get a virus but there's no way I'd keep something that wasn't in a totally new condition.

If its advertised as a tester that's a different matter but I don't think that's what's happened here.

bibbitybobbityhat · 30/07/2011 15:27

Disagree that this is any kind of molehill.

mumatron · 30/07/2011 15:36

paperview seriously? what if she hadn't checked it? how would you feel if you had given this to your dc, and they saw the porn? how about if you've got a ds and you see the porn on there and assume he had been downloading it himself? of course your not going to believe him, after all it's brand new tablet, isnt it?

definitely not a molehill tles

thisisyesterday · 30/07/2011 15:41

if anyone else had posted this they would not be getting the stick TLES has, that's for sure

really, a mountain out of a molehill???? you wouldn't be worried at all if you bought something for a child and then discovered it had porn on it? you'd just delete it and make a complaint?

riiiiiiight.

TLES, you have done exactly the right thing. This is totally outrageous IMO and I would be doing the exact same thing you have done if it happened to me.
If I had bought an item like that I would also have opened it up and looked it all over and got to grips with it before giving it to my child, so don't know why people are so bemused at someone doing that...

PaperView · 30/07/2011 15:44

The mountain = she took it too far. TRU and ELonex have both responded - no need for local papers imo.

AgentZigzag · 30/07/2011 15:53

Bloody hell, I'm not as wordly wise as I thought, my eyes are nearly popping out of my head at some of those titles Shock

Not something anyone who hadn't chosen to search for porn would want to come across, let alone your DC.

thisisyesterday · 30/07/2011 15:59

i disagree, i think it's something worth raising awareness of. a lot of people would not have checked a device because they would assume it was new. it's very reasonable to shout about it and make people aware that just because they buy a new product they don't need to check it over

then if you found porn what would you think? that your son, or someone else had downloaded it?
what if the child had seen it?

this is not something that can just be dealt with "in-house" as it were.

TheLadyEvenstar · 30/07/2011 17:27

I am eating atm but just need to make it clear at the time of contacting the papers i had not been in touch with elonex. TrU had not given and still haven't, a satisfactory solution.

OP posts:
Tiredmumno1 · 30/07/2011 17:56

I saw the article in the sun, i still say good for you.

Paperview seriously dont be daft, people need to be aware of these things especially when it comes to toys r us, the public have a right to know what these stupid money grabbing shops are up to.

TheMonster · 31/07/2011 09:49

I saw it in the SLP yesterday (the picture was fine, TLES!) and the article seemed to suggest that Toys R Us didn't believe you. I can't recall the exact wording, but something like 'discrepancies in the claim'. Having seen your video, providing that the tablet you filmed is the one you bought from TRU on the day you say you bought it, then I don't see how it couldn't be true. Surely there is no way to add things to history?
And that is A LOT of porn!!!

DunderMifflin · 31/07/2011 10:12

We call TRU 'Toys Arse' but this has totally different connotations now..!

TheLadyEvenstar · 31/07/2011 10:21

BoE yes thats the tablet from TrU well its the replacement. I am refusing to give it back to them simply because.
The first one was returned to store and powered up instore where TrU staff were shown the history. Then on Friday when HO called me and ranted they said they could not get it to power up so they had no proof anything was on the first machine. Thats when they said for me to return the second one direct to them and I told them to forget it. They don't want it returned to the manufacturors, I think because they will be able to find out exactly where it was downloaded and they are worried Thats my opinion.

OP posts:
TheLadyEvenstar · 31/07/2011 10:31

Dunder, certainly does!!

They are being arses though they are really trying to get me to return the machine to their store as opposed to returning it to elonex - who have been more than helpful and want to do all they can to get this sorted asap.

OP posts:
Northernlurker · 31/07/2011 10:39

I think there are two issues here. Firstly the fact that the tablets were used not 'new'. The op is perfectly entitled to ask for a rememdy for that. Don't see why she needs compensation though? As an adult she saw links to porn - that's very different from her dc seeing the actual porn.
The second is the newspaper angle which I think is pretty feeble tbh. No need for that at all. Like others here, I have read posts by this OP before though and it doesn't surprise me that she is (over) reacting in this way.

sockpoppet · 31/07/2011 10:44

Personally, with the way toys arse are dealing with this is take it all the way. I don't think the papers is an over reaction when a child or teenager could have found the porn. Some posters need to get over their previous issues with the op.

Northernlurker · 31/07/2011 10:50

Going to the papers in a 'won't someone please think of the children' manner is nearly always an over-reaction. In the OP's case she was on the phone to the paper before she had a final response from the store.

TheLadyEvenstar · 31/07/2011 11:06

NL, how is it an over reaction? I could have easily found this after giving it to my sons and then would have thought my eldest had been searching for porn thankfully I was setting it up when I found it. Either one of them could have easily found this and viewed the sites. If it had been 1 tablet I had found porn on would have been one thing but it was 2. The second one being a replacement for the one I returned within 45minutes of buying it.

You are free to feel I am over reacting however I don't feel I am as this is not the first incident of TrU selling porn.

Sock, I am going to be dealing with TrU but the replacement is coming from Elonex who are sending a replacement. All I want from TrU is an apology for the content one of their staff has downloaded - they are the ones who said the second one had not been returned to store but was brand new.

Northernlurker · 31/07/2011 11:13

LES - anyone of a hundred things could have happened but why not concentrate on what did. What did happen was you found something you had bought as new was not new. Doubtless this will be resolved by the supplier. Really no need to make a cause celebre out of it.
