To think we should be able to hide posts by certain people?

Not sure if this has been suggested but anyway, there are certain posters I just can't stand. They never say anything bad enough to warrant reporting but I just always get the feeling that they are trying to get a reaction or deliberately saying the opposite to everyone else to get a rise.

I never reply, because I feel that would give them attention they don't deserve but they do annoy me. I read the posts before I see the poster's name as in sure many of you do and I think it would be useful to be able to just hide all posts by a particular person within a thread instead of hiding the whole thread.

So Aibu?

Maurice then don't use the facility but others might prefer the choice. And stop making this personal to glitter

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 16/07/2011 18:30

Way, I see it, there's a couple of people whose posting style/ethos is akin to taking a giant dump in the middle of the thread.

It's all very well saying I can just go home and wash it off my shoes with the garden hose, but I'd rather not have trodden in it in the first place...!

OracleInaCoracle · 16/07/2011 18:30

Damn this phone

OracleInaCoracle · 16/07/2011 18:30

Damn this phone

mauricetinkler · 16/07/2011 18:31

I'm not making it personal to glitter hobbynoby. I was making a serious point, namely, if you reveal a lot of yourself online, invariably some twat will use it against you.

filthyfunkproject · 16/07/2011 18:33

Lissie - what the hell are you doing on your phone?
Stop sending all your messages twice you attention seeking nutter

giyadas · 16/07/2011 18:34

I don't think it's mn's audience you're worried about is it maurice? I think you're worried you'll no longer have an audience for your drivel.

BupcakesandCunting · 16/07/2011 18:36

I use another board with an ignore poster option.

When I discovered I could block this one dipstick, it was like someone had switched the mute button on a very annoying noise, which was then replaced by birds tweeting in the trees and the sound of a trickling stream. Lovely!

DragonAlley · 16/07/2011 18:39

What's wrong with having it as an option? Say you're hiding me. You say something I disagree with and/or find offensive. I challenge you on it. and again.. and again... and again...

bibbitybobbityhat · 16/07/2011 18:43

I think its a tremendous idea but only if your own username also says how many people you are hiding ie. bibbitybobbityhat (hiding 1) and also that the person being hidden gets an email from mnhq telling them who they are being hidden by.

I think that would all be a great enhancement to this site.

SinicalSal · 16/07/2011 18:46

I'd like an Ignore On This Thread button. Rather than Ignore full stop.

OracleInaCoracle · 16/07/2011 18:46
mauricetinkler · 16/07/2011 18:47

Shove it Giyadas.

giyadas · 16/07/2011 18:48

That would cause loads of fighting and bitching though. I'd just like to click hide, no fuss, no drama just pleasantness. As described in bupcakes post.

giyadas · 16/07/2011 18:49
filthyfunkproject · 16/07/2011 18:52

you're wearing me out girl

mauricetinkler · 16/07/2011 18:54

Just to confirm that I really need to get a life, I emailed the following to MNHQ today:

Dear sir/madam

I am regular poster on Mumsnet and think the site is great. I have an idea about how to improve the forums. It goes like this:

  • If there is a poster that is annoying you on a particular thread, you have the option to ?dislike? or tell to ?shut-up? that poster. Maybe you could have an icon like a rotten tomato which you virtual reality ?pelt? the poster with.
  • After that poster receives, say, 10 dislikes or is pelted 10 times they receive a Red Card and all of their existing posts on that thread turn red (as an example).
  • Thereafter, they cannot post anymore on that thread.

This would help stop spurious, wind-up and troll posters. It could also be used to highlight racism and homophobia (rather than remove such posts why not leave them there to be ?named and shamed?.

This idea was inspired by a poster who recently said that you should be able to hide certain posters. That seems a little extreme whereas I think my idea is more democratic.

I would greatly appreciate your feedback on this.

regards

What ya reckon??

Glitterknickaz · 16/07/2011 19:11

It could also be abused.
The option to hide posts affects no one.

BupcakesandCunting · 16/07/2011 19:14

In spite of what I just said about it being nice to hide a poster on another board, I don't think there's a need for it on this board. Don't get me wrong, there are some proper mouthbreathers on here, one in particular makes me leave the thread when she turns up on one I'm on. Like the virtual equivalent of being in the pub, seeing the local prick walk in and sipping up your port and lemon and leaving so that you don't have to engage with them. No fuss.

There's one poster on here who I've told to stop being a nobber before ignoring her but only because I felt her advice was damaging. Twice.

Glitterknickaz · 16/07/2011 19:18

I really don't see what is wrong with just not wanting to read it. BoulevardOfBrokenSleep (love the name btw) that's spot on.

DragonAlley in the situation you describe you still have the option to report to HQ, surely.

BupcakesandCunting · 16/07/2011 19:20

Actually I do rather like Maurice's idea...

worraliberty · 16/07/2011 19:22

I think Maurice's tomato idea could be abused.

It only takes a few posters with a personal grudge to just keep tomatoing that person for no reason. It would probably cause MNHQ more headaches than it's worth.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 16/07/2011 19:22

Takes one to know one Maurice and BTW it's Hob or hobnobs not hobby thanks

BitOfFun · 16/07/2011 19:25

I like the tomato idea, but it needs to be more than ten. I'd never be able to post at that level.

BupcakesandCunting · 16/07/2011 19:25

True, Maurice. I didn't think of that.
