To think we should be able to hide posts by certain people?

IDrinkFromTheirSkulls · 16/07/2011 08:50

Not sure if this has been suggested but anyway, there are certain posters I just can't stand. They never say anything bad enough to warrant reporting but I just always get the feeling that they are trying to get a reaction or deliberately saying the opposite to everyone else to get a rise.

I never reply, because I feel that would give them attention they don't deserve but they do annoy me. I read the posts before I see the poster's name as in sure many of you do and I think it would be useful to be able to just hide all posts by a particular person within a thread instead of hiding the whole thread.

So Aibu?

What's a threaded board? I live here and haven't been on other boards, ever Grin

posterofagirl · 16/07/2011 09:17

Grin @ cutting

The hide button works on some forums where there are known trolls/idiots. I think MN is just too big for it to work.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 16/07/2011 09:17

I'm getting paranoid, about 90% of my posts are useless, meaningless crap... Grin

OriginalPoster · 16/07/2011 09:18

These threads make me paranoid...

So I name change regularly in case I'm irritating people, then they will think I'm lots of irritating people, not just one.

Xpost ferret, glad I'm not the only one...

You have made me laugh several times, so they're not meaningless Grin

Tee2072 · 16/07/2011 09:20

Original threaded means that I would have the ability to post to you directly, within the thread, and it would appear under your post but indented to show that I had replied to you directly, as oppose to just attaching it to the end of the thread as MN does.

Can actually be much easier to read in terms of who is speaking to whom. Much less of a free for all and not so many 'oh that was to OriginalPoster, BTW' type posts.

LaWeasleyAintWeaselyAnymore · 16/07/2011 09:21

I think it's a mistake - I can't think of many people who I have never agreed with about anything ever.

Plus, there is something to be gained from everyone being able to see the reaction to bad posts. Like if someone is really rude or gives terrible advice, it's better to correct it than leave it and have others think that what they said is okay. If you've got a poster who pisses everyone off and most people end up hiding then the things they say are much less likely to be corrected.

BulletWithAName · 16/07/2011 09:21

I can do this on the other forum I use. Never bothered though, I don't get the whole hiding of threads/people thing.

CQrrrneee · 16/07/2011 09:21

If someone is being offensive/trolling report them. If they aren't then they have just as much right to post as everyone else. I don't like the idea of hiding posters.

OriginalPoster · 16/07/2011 09:22

Tee

Thanks, I get it now. My name doesn't help either...

hairfullofsnakes · 16/07/2011 09:23

I think yabvu - if you don't like something or someone just ignore! The whole nature of something like aibu is going to invoke strong and different reactions and what you think is rubbish someone else may agree with and disagree with you in your opinion about different posters - and so what?! You don't know them why are you that bothered?!

There are certain posters who I think talk shit sometimes but that's just my view point and I don't war to hide them because of it! Why are you so keen to shield yourself from opinions you don't like?! Aibu is great for readif different opinions even of you don't agree with them it is healthy to see other points of view and argue with them

tethersend · 16/07/2011 09:25

I would block all of you and win MN

Meglet · 16/07/2011 09:29

Yanbu. There are several trolls / wind-up-merchants on here at the moment who never bring anything to a thread except spite or petty rudeness.

I've been off sick and on here an awful lot. The same names keep coming up again and again, never funny, always pathetic and deliberately shit stirring. I've spotted them but others might take them to heart. They all tend to hang out on the AIBU boards and just post narky answers all the time.

BitOfFun · 16/07/2011 09:31

I don't agree. I just ignore the twats, and some of the biggest ones I have even grown fond of. One of the great things about some newer idiots, is that they make people I formerly loathed look like towering intellectual giants.

jasper · 16/07/2011 09:33

yes it's a great idea

GwendolineMaryLacey · 16/07/2011 09:33

DigitalSpy have this function, I've hidden a couple of posters and it works fine. Works wonderfully on Facebook as well. It is a bit mad to think that MN is different and we're above all that. We're just the same as other forums just with fewer tickers :o

lawnimp · 16/07/2011 09:35

fgs i hate these threads.

SuePurblybilt · 16/07/2011 09:36

You see, if the person you blocked didn't know you couldn't see them, they could be on a thread posting

'c'amava go if you think you're hard enough ya big jessie! No? No? Then I've won, hahahhahhhaha'

and you would never know but everyone else would think you were scared of the knobber. Do you really want that? Do you?

filthyfunkproject · 16/07/2011 09:38

Yes I agree bitoffun - but it would be nice to have the option.

mauricetinkler · 16/07/2011 10:04

If you're gonna post a thread like this OP, you ought to be naming names.

Tee2072 · 16/07/2011 10:10

Sue, if you're really that worried about someone calling you a big jessie in life, never mind on the internet? Maybe you should be a hermit! Grin

EricNorthmansMistressOfPotions · 16/07/2011 10:12

YABU
there are a couple of people whose name makes me go 'ugghh' but I don't like the idea of hiding posters. I would like an OP column so you can see who started the thread before you open it though.

worraliberty · 16/07/2011 10:14

I tend to scroll past the posters whose posts I think are bull

Not sure how a 'hide poster' function would work with name changing?

IDrinkFromTheirSkulls · 16/07/2011 10:15

But that would be mean maurice [shakes head and wags finger] naughty naughty Grin

OP posts:
SuePurblybilt · 16/07/2011 10:15

I am a hermit, Tee. I plait my beard into my ladygarden hair to ensure full coverage and live in a treehouse.

It would worry me that the knobbers thought they'd won. I realise that makes me tragically stupid.
