To think we should be able to hide posts by certain people?

Not sure if this has been suggested but anyway, there are certain posters I just can't stand. They never say anything bad enough to warrant reporting but I just always get the feeling that they are trying to get a reaction or deliberately saying the opposite to everyone else to get a rise.

I never reply, because I feel that would give them attention they don't deserve but they do annoy me. I read the posts before I see the poster's name as in sure many of you do and I think it would be useful to be able to just hide all posts by a particular person within a thread instead of hiding the whole thread.

So Aibu?

Knob won't bother them Skulls. I know that from extensive experience. You need to try something a bit more personal.

DragonAlley · 16/07/2011 14:56

"You still see people here saying "I'm hiding this thread because..." but I don't get why they do that."

Because otherwise people think they've buggered off in the middle of an argument a discussion.

IDrinkFromTheirSkulls · 16/07/2011 15:00

Ignoring them would work much better if they buggered off away from the threads I'm on Wink

Maurice, how about a short and quick "So's your mum" do you think that's personal enough? Grin

Diversity is what makes mn great and I would rather be challenged than surrounded by sycophants

Me too. Even now occasionally a fairly interesting thread can go from being quite good to really 'twee' when some posters kind of take it over and it strays from the OP's topic. It's not a problem, I just sigh and find another thread to read...but if the whole board became twee I think we'd be no different to Netmums Shock Grin

TrillianAstra · 16/07/2011 15:39

People who say "I'm hiding this thread because..." - does hiding actually take the thread out of Threads I'm On?

GreenEyesandHam · 16/07/2011 15:43

Forget about a 'hiding' function, could we please have something that weeds out all the double posts Grin

filthyfunkproject · 16/07/2011 15:54

I haven't got a problem with diversity at all - I love SCGB, ( for example ) even though she is nothing like me - she can debate intelligently and doesn't resort to childish PA's - it's the annoying, sanctimonious twits I'd hide - they're everything but controversial or diverse. - they're just annoying.
( There's only 3 of them so it's no big deal - and I wouldn't tell them - I'd quietly - without any fuss or drama - delete them - )

DragonAlley · 16/07/2011 16:15

Yes, hiding a thread does take it out of Threads I'm On.

LaWeasel · 16/07/2011 16:52

But you know some people would wouldn't they?

You'd get a PM from someone random after nothing very interesting has happened saying - "just so you know, you've really upset me so I'm hiding all your posts from now on."

or the more likely. "You're a lying shit head. I'm hiding all your fucking whining lying posts you selfish evil viper."

LaWeasel · 16/07/2011 16:54

I do however really like the function to hide a whole thread/topics. It's not just about "oh I've had a row with someone and they won't agree I'm right so I'm hiding it now." it's about "this is way too close to home and I can't stay away so I'm going to hide this before I get even more upset."

Glitterknickaz · 16/07/2011 17:03

I really don't get the "bwah hah I'm hiding you" sentiment, it's perfectly possible to just quietly get on with it and the person hid remain oblivious.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 16/07/2011 17:05

LaWeasel, I think if someone's going to send you a rude PM, they're going to send you a rude PM - the hide poster ability has no effect on that. Your example could just have easily said, "...you've really upset me and I'm never coming back to MN ever."

I agree with the OP, I'd like the facility to hide poster, but the majority on here generally seem to be against it. Well, the majority of posters anyway, there's probably lurkers who'd agree.

Could MN just secretly give me and the OP the ability to hide poster? I promise never to tell anyone, and only to use my power for good Grin

LaWeasel · 16/07/2011 17:06

Yes, you're probably right!

valiumredhead · 16/07/2011 17:12

It's a useful tool! I used to belong to another parenting forum and we were able to hide posters.

Fecklessdizzy · 16/07/2011 17:15

Make it all a bit dull and civilized though ... I like the fights! Being a chicken-hearted drip in real life it's the closest I get to a proper ruck ... Blush

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 16/07/2011 17:19

I would love this facility and can think of one poster that I would use it for every time. The poster in question adds nothing to any thread just tries to wind people up so I wouldn't feel that I would lose anything from the thread by getting rid of her posts and would feel considerably less irritated.

Glitterknickaz · 16/07/2011 17:29

Off the top of my head I can think of two I'd hide, and I suspect these people are trolls anyway. I honestly don't know why it can't be introduced, nobody would be forced to use it!

On the other forum I use I never have used it, nobody annoys me but this site is so much bigger.

lawnimp · 16/07/2011 17:31

but what if they namechanged?

Glitterknickaz · 16/07/2011 17:35

I'd just hide the change. No big deal.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 16/07/2011 17:47

At least the option should be there . No on is saying it's compulsory for everyone but maybe the element of choice would be good.

BitOfFun · 16/07/2011 17:51

If there was a name change, the person would have to become visible to you again, otherwise you could guess their identity.

DragonAlley · 16/07/2011 17:53

Personally, I think hiding posters would be rather childish.

DragonAlley · 16/07/2011 17:55

There are a couple of posters who annoy me all the time. I simply take no notice of them.

Glitterknickaz · 16/07/2011 17:55

Why childish?
