To think we should be able to hide posts by certain people?

Not sure if this has been suggested but anyway, there are certain posters I just can't stand. They never say anything bad enough to warrant reporting but I just always get the feeling that they are trying to get a reaction or deliberately saying the opposite to everyone else to get a rise.

I never reply, because I feel that would give them attention they don't deserve but they do annoy me. I read the posts before I see the poster's name as in sure many of you do and I think it would be useful to be able to just hide all posts by a particular person within a thread instead of hiding the whole thread.

So Aibu?

I agree with dragonalley, it reeks of "I don't like you and you have dared disagree with me - you're hidden" its petulant and childish.

Pagwatch · 16/07/2011 18:00

I would quite like to blast from the face of the earth those who disagree with me.
I suspect that is a tad petulant.

filthyfunkproject · 16/07/2011 18:00

If they annoy you all the time you must be taking notice of them - or being forced to take notice of them - if you couldn't see these people they wouldn't be annoying you and your MN experience would be more pleasurable.

BOF fancy a ciggie round the back of the bike sheds?

SinicalSal · 16/07/2011 18:06

Hide them? Hide them? they should be thanking their angels they get away with being merely hidden

Glitterknickaz · 16/07/2011 18:06

There ARE posters here who have been vile about the way I live my life, and my children. I'd like to be able to hide them as they are in the minority here and then my otherwise enjoyment of the site wouldn't be spoiled.

Why is that childish?

Don't use the words on a screen argument when it's someone's life you're dismissing.

BitOfFun · 16/07/2011 18:06

Yeah, I've got twenty B&H with your name on 'em.

Why can't it be an option though? Not compulsory for those who don't want it but just helpful for making life a little more pleasant for those of us who choose to partake........much like alocohol

valiumredhead · 16/07/2011 18:10

If it's good enough for Face Book.......

OracleInaCoracle · 16/07/2011 18:10

No it wouldn't. It would be dull. And I would never learn a new angle on anything. And my threads wouldn't make any sense. And I suspect that the bitchiness would increase dramatically. It make work well on other forums, in your opinion, but they don't allow swearing on other forums. Just because it works elsewhere doesn't mean it will work here

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 16/07/2011 18:12

Lissie I'm not talking about people I disagree with we. I find them often enlightnng and have learnt a lot on here. I'm talking about people who spout utterly pointless shitstirring bollocks.

OracleInaCoracle · 16/07/2011 18:15

But glitter, surely its best to challenge the people who are vile? If we had the hide option then posters like cvq, and dp would still be here.

Glitterknickaz · 16/07/2011 18:16

Sorry lissie but no, keeping my blood pressure at an acceptable level is far more important to me than 'excitement'.

My reasons are not for annoyance, they are for direct attacks on the way I live my life. That's more than annoying.

What is so wrong with having the option? You obviously won't use it so what is the issue?

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 16/07/2011 18:17

Oh yes I forgot Lissie I'm meant to educate these numpties Hmm and there was me thinking I came on here for a laugh and to relax.

Glitterknickaz · 16/07/2011 18:17

lissie the amount of challenging it took to get them outta here (and don't tell me they're not here in some other guise somewhere)....

How about I don't want to challenge them any more? I've been doing it for too long and I can't be doing with it.

I'm sure not everyone would exercise the option to ignore those users too, they can do the challenging if they're so keen.

mauricetinkler · 16/07/2011 18:17

Glitterknickaz - if you can't stand the heat....

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 16/07/2011 18:19

helpful maurice helpful Hmm

Glitterknickaz · 16/07/2011 18:19

For the sake of a couple of posters?

Why should users leave the site because of one, maybe two posters?

giyadas · 16/07/2011 18:26

some posters aren't here to engage with people honestly, they're here to scribble over everything, try and cause trouble and attention seek.
There is no chance of ever learning anything from them and I would hide them if I could, in the same way I avoid dull, ignorant people in rl.

mauricetinkler · 16/07/2011 18:27

Isn't a forum an open exchange of views, warts and all though? Won't the MN forum lose credibility if it starts letting users hide views they don't like? And if it loses credibility it loses audience, if it loses audience it loses ad revenues etc etc
Glitterknickaz - I suspect in your own case you have revealed too much of yourslelf and left yourself open to personal attacks?

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 16/07/2011 18:27

well said giyadas

OracleInaCoracle · 16/07/2011 18:28

Of course you shouldn't leave. Mn needs good posters. Report the ones being twats. Scummy racist/disabilist/sexist posts need to be challenged. And you can't do that if they're hidden.
