to think a lot of posters here believe the ONLY reason they are in a well paid is because they worked so much harder than anyone else and good luck and favourable circumstances had NO BEARING AT ALL

GOD there are some amount of smug posters here who seem to believe they are so far above the rest of us lowly workers, they can't stop telling us how hard they have worked, how academic they are etc etc and if you're not, well really you probably claim benefits and expect the system to help you out with your crap paid job

well guess what folks, some of us are in crap paid jobs due to unforeseen life events, not because we spent years at school studying and trying hard so we could earn minimum wage and be lectured to by people who don't have to compromise all their bloody lives

LeQueen here is the link to the whole thing.
www.businessballs.com/ifpoemrudyardkipling.htm

i read it everyday when my dad was dying of a brain stem tumour and was completely paralysed (unable to sit, had to be fed like a baby, bum wipped, unable to speak properly etc.)...when i was only just getting over a serious illness myself and running my own business. i knew i had to keep going.

The Kipling's poem brought tears to my eyes too because i had it pinned on the wall of my room when i was young Smile I can see it now next to John Travolta poster Grin

wordfactory · 11/07/2011 20:18

tilly that is very lovely.

I would also second your advice to approach problems in small chunks. Things seem much more doable that way.

TheRealTillyMinto · 11/07/2011 20:21

LeQ yes you do get to choose how you deal with shit in life... on a far more trivial note, i noticed how you said you like to spend your money...

my and my DP new house will be 3 bedrooms in a very nice area of central london, but my car is a 16yr old volvo and some of my clothes and shoes are completely worn out but I keep wearing them!

i think hard times help you to see what you value and what you place no value on.

MX- one with AS, one with severe autism, one being assessed for ASD ( but I know it's AS) and they think ds2 has dyspraxia and ADHD so not needing massive input as such but just Bloody Hard Work LMAO

The MA keeps me sane. It is moving forwards, that counts. Acgtually I was going to do teaching from 2012 but the collpase of teaching locally isn;t my fault (!) and i am too old to spend thousands on a 40% chance of unemployment: sod that! I know where my skills lie anyway (think homestart but for autism).

LeQ I agree- I kinda like my DH Wink regrdless of his income- BUT I do admire his sheer fight though. Actually I suspect hurdles bring out the true value of a good marriage- whether like yours the loss of a house or like ours the boys. It would have been easy to walk away years ago but better to fight and be happy with something that has real strength.

You have to finf your motivators where you can: I had a horid ex who said I ws too stupid to study so I did and got better grades than him; now I need the MA to keep ahead of sis and Dh LOL. It might not be sweet or cool but it works.

TheRealTillyMinto · 11/07/2011 20:23

We've only had spare cash since last August when we made our last mortgage payment so the novelty hasn't worn off and I am thoroughly enjoying buying stuff for myself like a big diamond ring which I would never have dreamed of, and dh has booked business class flights for our holiday in California whereas for the last 5 years we've had cottages in the pissing rain Devon. We couldn't afford to put the heating on for the last two winters as every spare penny went on the mortgage so we're having great fun now Smile

Laquitar · 11/07/2011 20:49

Yes, i'm old enough to remember him fit Grin
And next to his poster - after the poem- was one of Nadia Comanetsi (sp?)- i'm going down the memory lane now. And a cover of the cosmopolitan! And then 'the Second Sex'. I must have been very mixed up.

This thread has turned lovely.

I hope it also puts to bed the myth that people who have done well and have got a good attitude have not had any terrible misfortune or have had to compromise and sacrifice; tragedy strikes us all regardless.

You dont just do well just because life is been a bed roses . There is muck and thorns in that bed too...

catgirl1976 · 11/07/2011 21:13

Could be worse - mine was Bobby Brown Hmm

floosiemcwoosie · 11/07/2011 21:17

mumblechum2 · 11/07/2011 21:22

floosiemcwoosie · 11/07/2011 21:28

mumblechum2 · 11/07/2011 21:36

floosiemcwoosie · 11/07/2011 21:39

frankly you're in a very different position from current graduates, especially the 9k plus fee intake coming up in 2012. I'm afraid you still sound rather smug, and judgmental, because you assume that just because you found it all manageable, everyone else should do. Even a different generation facing a far more difficult job and property situation than you did... It's a very different world out there now.

Totally wrong.

Why do you suggest I am in a different position to current graduates? You seem to be presuming I am from an older generation, but I am mid-20s and graduated not too long ago (as I did actually say in my post). I got a competitive graduate job during the current economic downturn, so no, current grads are not facing a more difficult job and property situation than I did Confused Hmm

The post-2012 intake will take longer to clear their debt but their repayments will actually be marginally smaller than mine. Anyway, the repayments have no bearing on their financial situation while at uni and are not a barrier to going to university unless it becomes a mental barrier due to the rubbish people spout. I think the system of no-fees upfront and paying back out of your salary when it is high enough is excellent.

Not sure how you equate me saying success at university is by all means possible regardless of income with me judging people.
