What has struck me in all the frenzy about the NOTW (loathe it btw) is that nobody has mentioned the role of those who buy papers to read salacious gossip. If there wasn't a market for this crap, the NOTW wouldn't have nearly as much reason to go digging for it.

The demise of the NOTW is, in my opinion, a cynical move by Murdoch to get out of the shit. Bet he was planning to replace it anyway!

Great to see the NOTW closed, but I fear it is actually a cynial plan to save money. Apparently he has plans to produce the Sun on Sunday, without any extra costs, because they have already imposed 7-day working onto the staff. Some of the NOTW "journalists" might get work on the Sun, but all the admin, layout, printing, packing etc, will be covered by spreading the Sun workers a bit thinner for no extra pay.

Also, they'll be trying to ring-fence the finances, so that they can minimise the cost of any damages or fines.

Interesting to see how all these posters who have come here to say they "despise all journalists" - like mrschubb and others - are so very keen to spend their time/money on a site set up by two journalists, and therefore increase their influence/profits with every word they write.

Pan, you are wildly off the mark, i think the Guardian has done a great job on this story, plugging away at it for YEARS when other papers refused to cover it. I can't see how that is remotely in question. i merely remind the people on this thread and across FB and Twitter to query WHY the other papers might not be covering it, and quit crowing about the closure of the NOTW because unless you are absolutely brainless it's quite clear that the NOTW is the tip of the iceberg.

Apparenty David Cameron agrees with me, hence all the public enquiries.

There are plenty of decent, honest journalists out there, I worked with them for many years, including some at the News of the World. Feel very sorry for those losing their jobs, whilst Murdoch and co still get to run their crooked empire.

as i understand it (it's not my field) tabloid journalism is very specialised, so once that's your job, these are the people you are working for. i think what the PM was saying at the press conference is that they are all at it, he made a point of repeating that other papers were likely involved, so you are really saying that all tabloid journalists should re-train - and do what? these papers are the best-selling in the country... it will be interesting to see what happens to NoTW sales on Sunday (i'll be buying one, for sure) and in the longer term to the Sunday Sun.

Apols if anyone has said this before, but if you've got it in for Murdoch and his tabloids you should not be feeling schadenfreude right now - you should be feeling rage.

Closing the NOTW is not just retribution. It's Murdoch dodging a bullet.

It's quite common in cowboy property development companies to form a company, build a shoddy estate full of poor workmanship, unfinished ducts and bad wiring. The company is then declared bankrupt and its assets sold to a 'new' company. Meanwhile, people buy the houses, move in, and start seeing everything fall to pieces around them. But when they try and get in touch with the building company, they discover that it's 'gone bust'. And even if exactly the same people are trading just down the road, doing exactly the same thing but under a new name they can't touch them.

That's what Murdoch is doing right now. If NOTW is shut down no proper enquiry can happen, there will be no retribution, and I'm willing to bet that substantially the same staff will be hired back again to run The Sun on Sunday.

There's nothing here to feel pleased about at all.
