That's it really. And to hope that the rest of Murdoch's grubby empire gets the same treatment. The MPs don't appear to be cared of Rupert any more.

I have never really read the Telegraph as I always just assumed it was a tory paper but I may start from what you have said Moondog.

LineRunner · 07/07/2011 20:14

meditrina Sadly no - but I did once write a piece for the Grauniad.

Agree with Still that the BSkyB issue is crucial - which is why Cameron's truly in it up to his neck one way or the other, because it will be HIS minister Jeremy Hunt who makes the decision.

Greythorne · 07/07/2011 20:15

Trouble is, the better outcome would be:

-- Wade resigning and admitting her complicity. No payoff

-- Coulson investigated for perverting the course of justice (Sheridan case) and perjury

-- Hunt announcing that the BSkyS deal CANNOT go through

Thisnis the biggest, fattest, most ridiculous red herring I have ever heard. And when The Sun on Sunday launches, it will be business as usual. How many NOTW readers are up to date on the NI stable of papers? They'll be loads who were never going to boycott anyway and a few who would have boycotted but conveniently forget or don't know that The Sun on Sunday IS the NOTW.

flippinada · 07/07/2011 20:16

Dunno if anyone has spotted this and apologies if you are already aware, but Andy Coulson will be arrested tomorrow morning, plus (apparently) a former senior NOTW journalist.

Greythorne · 07/07/2011 20:17

Oh, looks like my number 2 point is goingto come true:

Coulson to be arrested

Greythorne · 07/07/2011 20:17

Cross post
Sorry

catgirl1976 · 07/07/2011 20:19

The BSkyB deal must not go through. Agree with Greythorne that the most NOTW readers will just switch to the Sun and no doubt the SunonSunday of whatever the change NOTW too.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 07/07/2011 20:20

I don't trust it. It just seems to have been done so... quickly. All seems like a big balancing act to me so the B Sky B thing goes through. Sun on Sunday here we come.

NormanTebbit · 07/07/2011 20:25

i don't feel schadenfreude, I feel utterly depressed by the closure of the NOTW.

Once again ordinary innocent people - journalists, photographers, subs, secretaries etc lose their jobs because of piss poor, frankly psychotic management, who then get away with it. The closure was a calculated move to lance a boil and allow Murdoch to proceed with his takeover of BSkyB.

Don't assume those made redundant will be re-employed. I bet there are quite a few NI households in financial turmoil tonight. I can see where the op is coming from but I get no pleasure from this.

They are not all bastards, most a decent people.

BornSicky · 07/07/2011 20:29

sorry, but I think all those saying isn't it sad for the NOTW employees, cos they're all nice, innocent people have got it very wrong.

These are people who spend everyday digging through the private lives of people in order to publish them to the rest of the world for money. They may not be the same team as the people directly involved in the hacking, but tabloid journalism is a dirty business. Even if you're the cleaner or the secretary of such an organisation, you choose to work for an employer whose bread and butter is causing human misery.

not good enough.

BettyDrapersWardrobeElf · 07/07/2011 20:31

Mrs Cog, your statement about journalists is incredibly insulting. As the daughter of a journalist, married to another journalist with journalist friends I can tell you that some have a huge amount of courage, integrity and a passion for the written word. There is a slight possibility that I am a bit biased.

Totally agree with OP about the schadenfreude, I detest everything about the Murdoch media and while I feel sorry for the journalists who have just lost their jobs by being in the wrong place at the wrong time, I have to admit I judge them a little bit for working for that man in the 1st place.

I am an avid Guardian reader, love the way they've dealt with all this.

NormanTebbit · 07/07/2011 20:34

Convince yourself yourself you're a lefty by cheering on 200 sackings then. And not Rebekah Brooks.

Brilliant.

catgirl1976 · 07/07/2011 20:35

I think it is just a business move by Murdoch to try to protect the bskyb deal. Cannot believe Brooks has not been held accountable (although I think / hope that will happen).

LineRunner · 07/07/2011 20:40

Clegg will be toast with his own party (finally) if the BSkyB deal is approved.

Don't forget Cable was minded to scupper it before some undercover journalists went 'Gotcha'.

flippinada · 07/07/2011 20:52

NP Greythorne, I am enjoying spreading that particular bit of news :)

learningtofly · 07/07/2011 21:23

I have found that taking pleasure in other peoples misfortune, however seemingly deserving, only comes back to bite me on the bum.

flippinada · 07/07/2011 21:29

Normally I would agree learningtofly. But I think this lot have thoroughly chewed their own backsides off!

reelingintheyears · 07/07/2011 21:35

The Guardian hunted down John Aitken who was a LIAR.

He perjured himself and sued them for libel.

And he went to prison.

Good on the Guardian.

He would have seen them closed down.

mauricetinkler · 07/07/2011 21:36

YANBU OP. Although tbf, first decent thing Guardian has done in years.
BTW - anybody know where that fucking fuck-faced fucker Cameron is when all this is going on? The rubber faced cunt.

moondog · 07/07/2011 21:38

'I have never really read the Telegraph as I always just assumed it was a tory paper but I may start from what you have said Moondog.'

Catgirl, I'd advise against only reading papers which you believe share your opinions. It all becomes very one dimensional.

It's the reason why I read the Guardian religiously.

catgirl1976 · 07/07/2011 21:40

I know - but I serioulsy dont have timeto read one paper properly. Have read the mail on occasion just for the morbid curiosity Blush

catgirl1976 · 07/07/2011 21:40

I am a guardian reader

LineRunner · 07/07/2011 21:40

I bought the Telegraph during the MP's expenses expose.

Jolly good (or somesuch).

moondog · 07/07/2011 21:41

Nowt wrong with the Mail.

Ormirian · 07/07/2011 21:43

YANBU.

But I wish the schafenfraude could have a wider cause - not just Murdoch. But he'll d ofor starters.
