I can't believe the headlines from the last 2 days; I thought he Milly Dowler story was bad enough but to target the Soham girls as well is beyond contempt. Infact I can't remember a story that has got me so angry in years.

I honestly believe that the entire country should boycott the paper and see their sales achieve 0 on Sunday

I suppose it's no use saying that allegations are cheap and sell (non-Murdoch but equally nasty) newspapers, but proof comes later if it comes at all?

NormanTebbit · 07/07/2011 15:39

"They're all at it," doesn't justify it - but it must be true.

Phone hacking isn't some kind of 'secret knowledge' known by some shady characters dealing with a couple of corrupt journalists. Christ, people on mumsnet know how to do it.

Do you think for a minute that if the NOTW is getting exclusives, out negotiating other papers on exclusive deals etc that the other papers aren't going to know about it?

And considering the sort of pressure these journalists are under to bring in exclusives, added to a culture where 'anything goes if you get the story,' it would be logical to assume other media are at it.

Or do you think they nobly stood aside, leaving only the NOTW to stoop so low - personally, I don't bloody think so.

NormanTebbit · 07/07/2011 15:41

The problem is that tightening up privacy laws plays right into the hands of corrupt people, but frankly I think the news media have fucked it up for us by treating our hard won democratic freedoms so casually.

mauricetinkler · 07/07/2011 16:02

Can't see what they can do with privacy laws. The horse has long since bolted on that one thanks to online media.

oohjarWhatsit · 07/07/2011 16:43

ooh, BBC just announced NOTW is to close down!

Carminagetsprimal · 07/07/2011 17:01

Brilliant news -

Carminagetsprimal · 07/07/2011 17:02

That paper is fucking disgusting -

Nancy66 · 07/07/2011 17:02

it's not brilliant news....

beachyhead · 07/07/2011 17:03

Can't believe last edition this Sunday......end of an era.

CurrySpice · 07/07/2011 17:09

I beg your pardon mauruce - you were right Shock

Carminagetsprimal · 07/07/2011 17:15

No - it's not good that innocent people will lose their job -
But the NOTW was never going to recover from this.
Better to make the decision quickly.

travellingwilbury · 07/07/2011 17:17

How long before the SUN is out on sundays?

Same shit different name .

complexnumber · 07/07/2011 17:21

Murdoch couldn't give a toss about the job losses to his minions.

He's just thinking in terms of damage limitation and hoping a gesture such as this will help his business and media interests continue to dominate the UK landscape.

NI still stinks.

complexnumber · 07/07/2011 17:24

I agree it's the end of an era, but not a very nice one.

(Travellingwillbury: I will be keeping my eyes out for a Sunday Sun, or any other launch of a 'new' Sunday rag)

Andrewofgg · 07/07/2011 17:45

There is a market for crap and if NI does not fill it somebody else will.

Let's remember that if Murdoch had not broken the print unions the Guardian would have closed and the Indie would never have opened.

That is the real reason so many people in Liverpool have it in for NI. A colleague of mine worked there at the time of Hillsborough and tells how she was bullied at work for sticking with The Times: We are boycotting NI, all of us, yadda, yadda, as if it was anybody else's business what paper she chose to buy. And newsagents were threatened to make them not stock NI. Not good.

GrimmaTheNome · 07/07/2011 18:06

There's crap and crap. Its not impossible to produce crap in a vaguely ethical manner.

tralalala · 07/07/2011 18:07

boycott the sun too...and hopefully that piece of shit will fall too

Andrewofgg · 07/07/2011 18:10

Ethical crap . . . can you suggest an example?

GrimmaTheNome · 07/07/2011 18:13

There's plenty of crappy mags which run 'stories' about slebs without needing to hack phones.

Andrewofgg · 07/07/2011 18:27

You hope. But the British public wants this sort of dirt - and doesn't really care for very long how it is got.

GrimmaTheNome · 08/07/2011 19:40

Yes, indeed I hope!

Both that 'the British public' will remember their revulsion over this, and that newspaper proprietors and editors will not bloody well dare to sink so low again.
