to think that the entire country should boycott NoW?

I can't believe the headlines from the last 2 days; I thought he Milly Dowler story was bad enough but to target the Soham girls as well is beyond contempt. Infact I can't remember a story that has got me so angry in years.

I honestly believe that the entire country should boycott the paper and see their sales achieve 0 on Sunday

It's not just NOTW though, is it? Or even the Murdoch empire. It's the entire genre of prurient media/publishing that regards human tragedy as entertainment.

I hope, perhaps optimistically, that this might make more people think about what they're buying and what the source of the story is in future.

I'm not being holier than thou - I include myself in this (although would never buy a "red top" paper).

JemimaMop · 06/07/2011 07:10

YANBU. I have never actually bought a copy of the Sun or the NOTW, but I did used to buy The Times. I won't do again though.

porpoisefull · 06/07/2011 07:11

Murdoch is about to be awarded full control of BSkyB by the government, already in the face of concerns about proper competition in the media, and now this. If you think that this is not the time to give him yet more power, sign this petition 38degrees.org.uk/

BelleDameSansMerci · 06/07/2011 07:31

Good call porpoisefull.

tallulahxhunny · 06/07/2011 08:07

I bought the news of the world on sunday, What has upset you all so much? links??

GrimmaTheNome · 06/07/2011 08:11

Uh, do you not listen to any news on radio or tv or read?
here's one link but google millie dowler "news of the world" and you'll find shedloads more.

NoobyNoob · 06/07/2011 08:12

I buy the NoTW ( oh no, chav alert?)

But, since this whole absolute fucking disgrace that is the phone hacking, I won't buy it again.

Might switch to The Sun instead.

TechLovingDad · 06/07/2011 08:13

I don't buy or read the NoTW. It's a sister paper to The Sun which I refuse to buy or read on principle. I'm a Liverpool FC supporter, so it's a natural decision to take.

GrimmaTheNome · 06/07/2011 08:14

Maybe they should put Vince Cable back in charge of the BskyB issue...

CaveMum · 06/07/2011 08:16

There are also claims this morning that they've uncovered emails that show NOTW paid police officers to hand over personal information (presumably phone numbers).

In my mind, the only reason other papers aren't leaping up and down on NOTW is that they have been involved in equally heinous activities and know it won't be long before they're found out.

GrimmaTheNome · 06/07/2011 08:18

Might switch to The Sun instead.

Sun is part of the same empire. On Today they said it was the only paper which wasn't leading with this story, buried it on P 6 with what sounded like excuses for the NotW people. Don't know what tabloid alternative there is though...

oohjarWhatsit · 06/07/2011 08:22

lol, i cant believe anyone actually pays real money for these rags anyway

its those people who need their heads testing

GrimmaTheNome · 06/07/2011 08:22

I'm having to think about the one newspaper I get delivered each week, Saturday Times.

Not sure what the best alternative would be. I've never been particularly keen on Telegraph, guardian or Independent for various different reasons (political slant and journalistic style or lack thereof).

mrsscoob · 06/07/2011 08:22

I saw the headline on the BBC news this morning saying the NoW reporters also hacked into the phones of victims families of the bombings of 7th July. How many more will come out now do you think? It is shocking.

I did actually have a little look on The Sun website this morning, just out of interest, to see how they are reporting this story seeing as it is headline news everywhere else. Surprise Surprise there is barely any coverage, just a tiny bit if you scroll right down saying how the editor Rebecca was "sickened" by it.

GrimmaTheNome · 06/07/2011 08:30

Anyone know how the Times is reporting it?

mauricetinkler · 06/07/2011 08:34

Sky News seems to have remained fairly impartial though?
I hope this brings the NoW down but please please dont let it have implications for Sky TV - or else my life will be over.

Sirzy · 06/07/2011 08:35

I know the sun only has a small bit of coverage on page 6 ish according to daybreak.

I never get the notw or sun anyway so can't boycott them.

I am pleased to see advertisers pulling out as that will really hit them if enough do it and is probably more likely to happen than buyers stopping as some just won't care/understand.

NormanTebbit · 06/07/2011 08:36

"might switch to The Sun instead"

Flisspaps · 06/07/2011 08:38

TechLovingDad Same here.

mauricetinkler · 06/07/2011 08:39

I actually think this will finish the NoW. If you think back to Hillsbrough and the Sun's antics, the paper's sales never recovered in Liverpool. To piss the whole country off really takes some doing.

GrimmaTheNome · 06/07/2011 08:39

I hope this brings the NoW down but please please dont let it have implications for Sky TV - or else my life will be over.

there's loads of alternatives to sky now and the human race evolved without any TV at all Shock

unclefest · 06/07/2011 08:40

I would not hang the NoTW on a nail in my lav.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 06/07/2011 08:41

tallulah I dont think links are necessary TBH. Unless you dont have a tv, radio or access to the internet.

It is the biggest story in the county at present. There are also several threads running on MN.

I dont by NOTW since the Stephen Lawrence murder because of their behaviour.

I have been emailing companies known to advertise with NI and requesting they confirm that they will be no longer dealing with them. I have added that I would like this information in order for me to make my own decisions about who I will be giving MY business to.

I am particuarly naffed off a the Co-Op for not getting its act together.

TrillianAstra · 06/07/2011 08:46

I imagine the majority of peope who have been following the story don't buy NotW anyway.

mauricetinkler · 06/07/2011 08:48

I buy it Trillian - you can hide it in its entirity inside a copy of the Sunday Times.
